There should be an international law against starving out sovereign states just because.
SmokeABowlNoCap@reddit
The US doesn’t care about international law they break it all the time and just shrug
dnhs47@reddit
Trump and his pedophile administration don’t care about anyone’s laws, including American laws.
ICE alone has been found to be in violation of American laws by US Courts 4,000+ times, and they just ignore it.
US courts have no mechanism to enforce their rulings when the DOJ and US Marshals become political operations, focused on exacting revenge on Trump’s adversaries, rather than enforcing the law.
What good are laws with no enforcement? That’s what we’re living through in America today.
Technical-Emergency2@reddit
go lookup that footage of CNN having an insider's view of ICE during Obama's tenure. it was perfectly fine then and everyone agreed with it
dnhs47@reddit
Wrong.
ICE under Obama was bound by court rulings, as was every government agency. ICE under Obama did not murder Americans.
ICE under the pedophile grifter ignores court rulings, over 4,000 of them the last I checked. ICE under the rapist-in-chief brags about arresting, deporting, and even murdering American citizens.
You try to equate video of conditions in ICE detention in both eras with these other matters. Nice try, we’re not fooled.
Technical-Emergency2@reddit
Truth: facts don't care about your feelings. I don't care for either side. I'm just stating historical facts. You speak of due process. The last 4 years, there was no due process for many coming in. By law there is a process to enter the country... in fact any country. So if you want to play by due process, then it has to apply on both ends, not just one.
JimJava@reddit
Just another day creating a humanitarian crisis and a war to distract from the Epstein Files.
Flat_corp@reddit
Maybe I’m too deep in the rabbit hole, but while I think distraction from the Epstein Files is a decent collateral for them, I’m more on board the “We’re going to start WW3 to usher in the Apocalypse” level.
carlitospig@reddit
Those in power decided that the climate crisis can’t be managed so they decided to shake the snow globe and steal all the resources in the chaos.
That’s my theory anyway.
GridDown55@reddit
Nah, I don't think they're that organized. It's a future problem for someone else.
carlitospig@reddit
I dunno, mate. The fact that they were all recently building bunkers on private islands is rather telling. That and everywhere he wants to invade is north.
It’s March and today will be 90F here in CA. Unless we blast our dams this valley of ours will start to look like Death Valley. Migration will begin soon (I’d say 30 years) to where farmers can actually grow something other than just sunflowers. You can’t even grow tomatoes in 115f. I feel bad for Canada, as they are really not prepared for what’s about to happen to their country.
JimJava@reddit
You have a point, some people in the Trump administration have moved their housing to military bases. That doesn't instill a lot of confidence in how they are running the government.
CardiologistNo8333@reddit
My thoughts exactly. They know what’s coming and that we don’t have much time left so they’re trying to hoard resources to survive as long as possible.
carlitospig@reddit
Just waiting out those ark ships to take them off planet. Dont worry, they’ll need our grandchildren to work those ships so I suppose we win in the end.
Msbossyboots@reddit
Why not both?
JimJava@reddit
I hear you, it's not a healthy mind space for me but the administration and their actions keep getting weird so conspiracy theories and back on the menu. I can see Trump saying things to Heseth like, "What size of the nuclears do we have Pete? Do we have some of the small ones, how about the backpack ones that Putin told me about, we got any of those laying around?" God help US.
LankyGuitar6528@reddit
I'm getting those same vibes. Has anybody actually confirmed Trump's weird hair isn't covering a birth mark shaped like a perfect 666?
reccenters@reddit
You can tell when he's having bad mental days when he can't do his hair and has to wear a hat.
LankyGuitar6528@reddit
My wife has days like that too... but so far as I can tell, no 666 birthmarks.
JimJava@reddit
Such an imperfect vessel though, just yuck.
7rumaga@reddit

Aurelar@reddit
TBH I think a large part of the reason is that they want to make sure socialist states can't succeed. They act as if those states have failed because of poor policies when really they've been hampered by embargoes and sanctions. They're terrified that a success of a socialist system would show the flaws in their own, or even the mere possibility that one could work.
phinkz2@reddit
There is an international law on how you're not supposed to use starvation as a weapon in wars, which is kinda similar. Although people like Israel have claimed that it doesn't apply since they're not at war.
It wouldn't be enforced but as you're saying, starvation and/or water denial (see West Asia) is pretty inhuman.
IM_INSIDE_YOUR_HOUSE@reddit
Who’s going to enforce it?
Frosty-Cup-8916@reddit
Can you explain to me? Almost no countries respect the embargo on Cuba, so they should be able to get plenty of supplies from countries other than the US.
Saying this as someone who supports removing the embargo regardless.
wolacouska@reddit
The U.S. recently has sanctioned any country that sends oil to Cuba. Mexico was forced to stop and so was Venezuela.
And even back when it was “just” an embargo of U.S. goods it included anything that had more than 10% U.S. parts. Not to mention, banks aren’t allowed to process payments for Cuba in usd without risking billions in fines.
Osirus1156@reddit
The U.S. and Israel would just ignore the laws because they’re evil as fuck.
dnhs47@reddit
You’ve simplemindedly confused “America” and its 350 million people, with Donald J Trump, one person, plus a few hundred of his pedophile friends running his administration.
That’s easy to do, when numbers confuse you. Millions, hundreds, very confusing.
Trump is evil, no argument there.
Things would be different if Trump were not president. Be sure to thank your American progressive friends who sat out the last election (didn’t vote) because they objected to Kamala’s position on Gaza. That really worked out great for everyone, right? Gaza is definitely better off today because Kamala isn’t president. /s
jackalopeDev@reddit
Who would enforce that law? You can write down as many noble things as you'd like, but unless you have an organization thats willing and able to enforce that law, by violence if necessary, then all you really have is nice sounding thoughts on a piece of paper.

LankyGuitar6528@reddit
This truly sucks. The people of Cuba don't deserve this. Honestly if you lived in Cuba and the US decided to shut off your power, what are you supposed to do about it? Grab a pitch fork and go overthrow the government? That's ridiculous. All that happens is the leadership of Cuba continues to live well and people of Cuba suffer even more.
Technical-Emergency2@reddit
this is not new. Cuba has had power outages for decades now. you know who's not affected? tourist areas and government officials
Mr_Metrazol@reddit
What do you think pressured the communist regimes in Europe to fall? It wasn't outright rebellion, it was the inability of corrupt and illegal governments to contine to oppress the people.
I look forward to see the liberation of Cuba.

Yes, because we invaded their primary energy partner and blockaded the island.
Almost as if this is the exact byproduct of a policy of strangulation and oppression of the island.
Embark10@reddit
From a venezuelan, let me fix that for you:
Notes:
Pollos1958@reddit
You are arguing in bad faith. No country would survive a blockade as long as Cuba has endured.
Embark10@reddit
No country would survive such a despicable dictatorship, but apparently that's not relevant or?
Pollos1958@reddit
No, the most relevant thing here is the blockade. Any analysis of Cuba's economic problems must begin and be dominated by the damn blockade! Anything less is disingenuous.
Embark10@reddit
Mate, the Cuban government siphoned thousands of billions of dollars in the form of oil from Venezuela. If they weren't so busy with stuffing their own pockets they would've been able to build a half decent and working system for their citizens, but oh well.
Pollos1958@reddit
If you think the Cuban government siphoned away trillions of dollars of oil revenue then, boy, do I have a bridge to sell you.
Embark10@reddit
My bad. Meant to say thousands of millions but messed up the scale. I've fixed the comment now.
Still we're talking about billions here, upwards of 60B for a small island with 10m inhabitants. The point remains.
Eeny009@reddit
And then they'll tell you about how the local government is incapable of meeting the population's needs and oppresses them.

Cuba should acquire as much solar panels as they can. Certainly they can be utilized on balconies for some power generation and less reliant upon a failing grid.
pc-erin@reddit
They are. They already have several industrial parks in china churning them out. It just takes a long time to make enough to power an island of 10 million people.

Seems russia and china have abandoned them and all of south america as well ( not that we want them there ). Really surprised they arent talking about the causes and issues with a country so close to us. Heck look at Haiti as well. nadda, just stopped talking about them. Iran is at least buying everyone some time right now. If the US is dumb enough to put boots on the ground? Even better.
Our only real hope, at this point, is for the US to collapse faster than they can execute expansionist acts of violence and aggression.
They are too big, too greedy and too stupid to allow for peaceful coexistence any longer. They are dead set on war and conquest and they won't stop until someone makes them stop.
The world needs the US government to fail. Whether that's through a civilian uprising, a political or military coup, or civil war is pretty much irrelevant. Otherwise it will be WWIII.
Best case would be for them to break up into regional sovereign entities.
The hard right fascists are too incompetent to survive on their own, let alone pose enough of an existential threat to really matter on a global level, and the rest of the world could finally move on and let them and their insanity fade away.
LankyGuitar6528@reddit
The cost of the current war is $1 - $2 billion. Perhaps the rest of the world should stop loaning this government money. They borrow 6 out of every 10 dollars they spend.
melympia@reddit
Well, there is always the optuon to add a 52nd after the 51st, and a 53rd after that. Gotta make some adjustments for Canada and Greenland, after all.

Bob4Not@reddit
“Total grid collapse” is a pretty terrifying phrase to hear when you know what a “cold start” or “black start” is.
I’m preparing for one in the US due to extensive baseline power usage increases AND peak temperature increases. If the power grid management fails to properly mitigate brownouts and the frequency falls too far, you can have a grid collapse.
Black starts can take any amount of time.
KingCarbon1807@reddit
People said I was nuts to put $30,000 worth of batteries on my home solar.
RealCanadianMonkey@reddit
Wait until you find out that you can't access that power in the event of grid failure, unless you have a backup storage system and an inverter.
Big_Fortune_4574@reddit
A battery is a backup storage system and an inverter lol
Bob4Not@reddit
You’re mistakenly thinking of solar panels with micro inverters. You can’t access that solar power in an outage without a hybrid inverter and batteries.
bacan_@reddit
What should we know about a cold start?
Bob4Not@reddit
Restarting big power plants requires power. Consumers are disconnected as the power companies start a small generator to power the start of more generators and this provides power to boot bigger power plants. Slowly customers are reconnected as generator capacity is added.
If equipment is damaged from the collapse event, the ETA is unknown for the affected area. If mistakes are made during the black start, more damage can occur.
This must all be done in sync as to not mismatch demand and supply.
Here’s a video explaining:
https://youtu.be/uOSnQM1Zu4w?si=N2zauq_R3MONXMNH
Big_Fortune_4574@reddit
Here’s a good video on it from one of my favorite YouTubers: https://practical.engineering/blog/2022/12/5/what-is-a-black-start-of-the-power-grid
Otherwise-Speed4373@reddit
First generators, then hydro, then other plants. In the US there are 6 grid regions, but really only 3 interconnect regions. In my opinion the US should have a large number of microgrids to improve resiliency and reliability and take advantage of regional power producing capabilities (such as solar, wind, traditional hydrocarbon, and SMRs). However, a lot of these US efforts were also tied to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (Biden signature legislation), which was gutted by this current administration. Say what you want about renewable energy and a decentralized grid, but from a keep it local / make it harder to disrupt all power generation -- it makes a lot more sense than what we are doing now. Oh well, I got my own generator, solar, and wood to last a long while ... have fun rest of the world!
GunkyMirl4444@reddit
Good for you.
Alarmed_System2152@reddit
Once when I was little, I was playing outside and some kid invited me over. I asked my mom and she became furious to learn I had asked this after playing outside, before doing my homework. I feel like that situation is similar to the Iran conflict:
Congress, can we have some money for more weapons?
How's your economy?
Uuummm. We need to upgrade our infrastructure to withstand catastrophic collapse before we focus on the economy.
YOU STARTED ANOTHER FUCKING WAR BEFORE YOU EVEN MADE SURE YOUR OWN PEOPLE CAN DEPEND ON CONTINUITY OF THEIR STANDARD OF LIFE?!?! GET THE FUCK BACK INSIDE AND START ON YOUR DOMESTIC ISSUES, GOD DAMN IT!!

Training-Power-8911@reddit

pendorbound@reddit
And if anything goes badly wrong, it can cause everything that’s already up to fault out (if you’re lucky) or fail catastrophically, sending everyone to back to step one. Black start can take takes days if everything goes perfectly. Months if not.
SeVenMadRaBBits@reddit
All of this should be higher up.
forbiddenfreedom@reddit
QualityPitchforks@reddit
If it's truly a collapse, then a cold start won't be possible. You need some kind of power available to cold start.
Black start is from nothing - no power, no battery.
LopsidedRaspberry626@reddit
Last time this happened Cuba used a Navy vessel's generating abilities to get the grid back running - It was a year or two ago
electromage@reddit
That's assuming there's fuel to burn though. If the plants shut down because they ran out of fuel how would you restart them?
Bob4Not@reddit
There are designated black start generators and a procedure to bring the large plants back online and resync their phases.
TeamRedundancyTeam@reddit
In Cuba or are you referring to the US fears?
Bob4Not@reddit
In the US, but I think anywhere there’s something similar.
QualityPitchforks@reddit
Good reminder.
I didn't mean to imply those weren't there, but they would be off and disconnected.
Bob4Not@reddit
Right. The procedure never gets put into practice in the US so I anticipate mistakes and delays
LankyGuitar6528@reddit
Well... don't ask ChatGPT... that could trigger one. :)
And yes... just kidding. I love AI and use it all the time. But it is one more stress on an ancient grid that needs some serious upgrading.
Forlorn_Cyborg@reddit
Can I ask if you’re in Texas? I know it happens often there because the power grid is independent from neighboring states.
Bob4Not@reddit
No, but the TX grid certain is smaller and IMO more vulnerable than the rest of the county. The rest of the US is on larger regional grids or zones and hell-like heat domes can span those too, as well as their neighbors.
kormer@reddit
Everyone gives Texas shit for being their own grid, but it's way larger than either the UK or Australian grids, and about the same size as Korea or Brazil.
angrytetchy@reddit
With the unspoken "if you're not in the contiguous States, you're unbelievably fucked" understood. (In Hawaii. Yes I'm aware of how cooked we are when it comes to our incredibly fragile electric grid. Nothing I can really do about it - don't talk to me about solar when I'm stuck on SSDI and in a "landlord special" and Helco wants to raise our rates again. Best I can do for prep is staying aware - why I'm here - and have barter-able skills.)
brightheaded@reddit
How prepare
Bob4Not@reddit
Make fire with stick 🔥 burn candle for light 💡 no burn couch 🛋️ cool head with rock 🪨
NotDinahShore@reddit
I’ve been reading about an imminent grid failure/collapse in the US since the 1990s.
If the grid were as vulnerable and rickety as many believe, I have to think it would have already experienced catastrophe at least once. But it hasn’t. So, perhaps it’s more robust than we think.
Christmas_Ale@reddit
Reasonable point, but as a counterpoint, what about the summer of 2003? That was major.
Bob4Not@reddit
What in describing is a matter of peak demand exceeding our production in a record setting heat dome in addition to all of the new datacenters and EV’s put online in the past year.
More than likely we’ll be fine, there are measures to rotate blackouts if it comes to that, but there are risk.
Too_reflective@reddit
Not a crazy worry.
I am more concerned about loss of transformers (due to whatever cause) - the industrial capacity to replace those in a reasonable amount of time just isn’t there (for the US).
blt88@reddit
Yep that’s the problem I’ve seen from where I live (which has had a decent amount of tropical storms/hurricanes in last few years). Transformers would be installed only to have to replaced sometimes 24 hours later. Then, a few days later, the transformer would blow up and we’d be out of power for half a day sometimes longer; rinse repeat.
spartyftw@reddit
Would a natural gas generator mitigate this?
PhiloLibrarian@reddit
This summer will get ugly…
AgeMysterious123@reddit
I live somewhere with very little sunlight on my roof due to tree cover, but do have natural gas. Would a generator like that work in this scenario or is the fact that the whole grid is down mean something “upstream” would be an issue?
Bob4Not@reddit
You mean like your own personal off grid gas generator? Wouldn’t hurt to have one. I doubt natural gas would run out very fast in a crisis.
If you’re talking about natural gas power plants in your area, they’re still going to be subject to your grid management and how they manage their power pool and distribution.
BuilderUnhappy7785@reddit
This happened before and they got back online pretty quickly. But without fuel there will be no restart.

Blockade of fuel
Round-Medicine2507@reddit
Probably a blockade of.almost everything at this point.
beginner75@reddit
Ships from China and Russia aren’t blocked though. For some reason they don’t see Cuba as important as of now.
TomTheCardFlogger@reddit
It seems to be indicated that all oil is being barred from entry. The key supplier was Venezuela and they are cut off now, for China or Russia to significantly help Cuba now would be seen as an extremely aggressive move by the US and they don’t want the smoke. At least not right now.
zaevilbunny38@reddit
As opposed to providing munitions, rocket fuel and the target data of US troops ? Or is it more likely, they don't want to give Cuba the billion dollars in oil needed to keep their grid up for the year.
TomTheCardFlogger@reddit
Who is lining up to give Cuba oil? They’re prevented from purchasing any, they’re effectively cut off from the global economy.
The first 3 things you mentioned are done frequently by all major powers to undermine conflicts the others are involved in so it wouldn’t be an escalation beyond the current state of things.
kormer@reddit
There isn't a blockade of fuel. Maduro was giving them dirt cheap oil in exchange for Cuban soldiers providing security in Venezuela.
Cuba doesn't have the money to purchase it at market rates, so they're totally boned unless someone wants to step in and donate some. Given that it's going to the moon, I don't see that happening right now.

34.7% of registered voters did not cast a vote.
Hardly a resounding “mandate from the people” that MAGAts think it was.
impermissibility@reddit
It's a plurality of votes cast, not a minority. The term "minority" is reserved for portions of an anything that are not the largest portion of that thing. When there is no absolute majority, we use the term "plurality" for the largest portion.
dnhs47@reddit
Correct - words mean things, they aren’t interchangeable.

Citizens United: even a fifth grader can identify the blatant falsehood and lie in this term. The average citizen gains no benefit from this horrendous SCOTUS decision

Those are corporate democrats my man, which is just a different way of saying republicans. Liberals definitely do not want this war.
Competitive-Image799@reddit
...they gotta (D) after their name? Let's skip the No True Scotsman rigmarole here, the Democrats in power are ok with this war, and they've been ok with all of the imperial adventurism the US has embarked on the past few decades. Once you realize that, you'll probably stop referring to yourself as a "liberal" in a positive context.
Xrider24@reddit
Again, those are corporate dems, which in any other country, would be considered right wing politicians.
Liberals/progressives have been fighting with corporate dems since Bernie.
Youre absolutely right though, many dems (D) are controlled opposition. (Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries are perfect examples of AIPAC traitors.)
mattstreet@reddit
The problem is that in America people think that if you want to give a few bread crumbs to the poor and don't actively try to kill gay people that makes you a leftist. And we confuse liberal with being on the left.
Dems and "Liberal" are still right wing in the more international definition of left and right but since left vs right are two things and we (functionally) have two parties, we decide to call the slightly less right-wing "left".
And then since we all talk about it in slightly different terms we argue with each other when we mostly know that they're almost the same parties but one isn't quit as brazen about hating everyone but themselves.
Competitive-Image799@reddit
Alright dude lol keep your faith in the Dems, we'll we waiting if you figure it out.

I heard that there were 'negociations' taking place between Cuban and US officials. I bet its to return 'stolen' property from Miami cubans.
So expect another revolution in Cuba this time next year if the US get a deal or goes in by force.
The Cuban people want out of their current system...but I bet they don't want a return to what was there prior to the communists.
snail13@reddit
Not many who remember the time before communism are alive today, much less still in Cuba. Those people are in their 70s-90’s now. Most people left on the island today have only ever lived through communism or were children when Batista was around so they would have been more sheltered from the reality back then.
Case in point, my mother was a child and teen in Cuba and left for the US in ‘61 as a young adult. Unfortunately, she’s never been back (but she sent my brother and I to see the motherland a few years ago when my father passed).
Most of her friends and family have long since passed and her memories of her childhood in Cuba are idyllic and nostalgic about growing up, going to school, and playing in the beach every weekend; not about politics.
To people from that generation, anything is better than the last 65 yrs of the communist regime.
Brief-Floor-7228@reddit
Its funny, and understand what you are saying...but we have grown up in what was supposed to be pure Capitalism and we see all the pitfalls.
Frosty-Cup-8916@reddit
The US has not been anywhere near full capitalist for a long time. Arguably ever.
But yeah, that's what the propaganda spouts when you go to school I guess.
HybridVigor@reddit
Not even Adam Smith (the "Father of Capitalism") thought "full capitalist" was a good idea. In fact, he predicted the wealth inequality and corruption we're currently experiencing with our brutal laissez faire capitalism.
Frosty-Cup-8916@reddit
My comment wasn't an argument for a full capitalist society, it was just an observation.
Brief-Floor-7228@reddit
Well capitalism from the 50s to the 90s produced today's techbro oligarchs so I guess it isn't capitalism now...more of a covert feudalism. Which is 1000% worse.

Bottom line, Cuba is a dictatorship that tried to host Russian nukes. That same government is in charge today. Why would the embargo end?
Choices have consequences.

Another american justify starving civilians
TurgidGravitas@reddit
I'm not American. You can tell by my proper use of punctuation.
If the Cuban government actually cared about their people, they'd have ended their subservience to Russia. But they'd rather starve their own people than admit ever doing anything wrong. Denouncing their support of the USSR and Russia would end the embargo. How many Cuban deaths is Cuban pride worth?
Iamjust4fish@reddit
So they should bow to USA like everyone else to not get starved ?
TurgidGravitas@reddit
Yes, that's how reality works. If someone has control over resources that you need to survive, you need to do what they say. You can't feed your children with pride.
I am not condoning this. This is how the world works. The guy with the biggest stick makes the rules and while we all love to pretend we're Harry Potter or Katniss Everdeen, those are fictional characters.

Its a cultural tradition of terror and theft. Americans of European descent are trying to turn America into a yt supremacist nation (again).
Australians of European descent are trying to turn Australia into a yt supremacist nation.
South Africans has a whole history lesson on the South Africans of European descent.
Europeans and those with European ancestry are literally colonizing Palestine and the Middle East to turn it into a yt supremacist area.
