Happy to be corrected. Can you tell me how where I'm misinformed? The Toyota N platform chassis is from 2004. The hard points in the 2005 XE20 is the exact same as the current 2026 model. The A760H 6-speed is from 2005 (launched in the GS). The AA80 8-speed is from 2008 (launched in the IS F).

Came here to say the same thing, the current IS is the same basic car from 2013, meaning it'll be just shy of 15 years old if it's replaced when anticipated in 2027. To compare, BMW has had two full product cycles in the 3 series in that timeframe. The F generation started in 2013. The G in 2018, and we'll be getting a next gen by the end of this year. The reason the germans continue to pull away from the competition is precisely this, they're constantly updating their cars while Toyota has the same sorry ass 3.5 v6 that's been coming in the IS for 20 years. Lexus has had to muffle price increases on the IS just to keep sales alive, these cars were already not as good as German counterparts when they first came out, they're not even in the same conversation today.

This is why whenever someone tries to compare the Japanese and the Germans I chuckle in their face. The Lexus brand as a whole is falling flat imo. The LS and LC are dead, the GS (the ES’s cooler sibling) has been dead. The LFA replacement will be fully electric which i don’t really have an issue with but the negative reception is definitely there. The LX is outdated and apparently rides like shit, the TX nor the RX can compete at all with the X5, and the NX has been forgotten about.

Before we bought our NX450h+ we tested almost every PHEV crossover from $50-80K. I think a lot of the engineering decisions found in the German vehicles were, frankly, stupid. And the actual *daily* driving dynamics were only marginally better for the most part unless you really fucking hate the eCVT, which I don't. And outside of BMW, the interior quality was worse. Honestly I think most of the opinions on this sub are just blindly regurgitated from YouTube.

Lexus falls flat for us in the enthusiast realm, but many people who want the luxury more than the performance don’t care. Case in point, my wife is picking up a TX for the reason its interior is nice, has good amenities and it gets good fuel milage. Not like performance doesn’t matter at all tho, she did end up getting the 500h because the 350 sounded like you were torturing a small animal every time you used the throttle.

There's always been periods of time where it looks like someone is going to make a legit run to challenge the Germans, then they just give up half way through. In the mid 00s Infiniti dropped the G35 and legit made BMW scramble to match. It was a fantastic competitor, then Infiniti took that and did fuck all with it for a decade, then replaced it with an underwhelming Q and just sorta gave up. Then the same thing in the early 2010s with Lexus - the GS and IS combo were really looking primed to take on the 3/5 with the LS being a fantastic car in it's own right (if you don't care about sportiness). Then what? Don't innovate for 15 years, drop the GS, keep the IS with an engine you developed 20 years ago wile BMW constantly refines to the point where the B58 is leagues above anything coming from Toyota lol. The shame is I know Toyota can make better cars, they do when they want to. They just don't seem to want to pour resources or dev time in to these platforms despite the fact that BMW keeps proving the market for sports sedans is alive and well.

I 100% agree and in theory, consumers are suppose to "punish" Lexus for selling such an old product, but that's not the case here. Consumers largely choose the Lexus because it's reliability or seen as reliable. In a way, it doesn't directly compete with the Lexus IS. Honda's Acura is suppose to have the counterpart to the Lexus IS, but their sports sedan, the TLX was anything but that and now it's dead so it clearly failed

The iX3 looks superior, relative to other electric SUV's. Front end is a matter of preference. The chunky short-hood body style just looks less offensive on SUV's. I assume the design needed to be like this to fit the massive 110 kWh battery into a compact sedan, but the proportions end up making it look like a 228i Gran Coupe. Rear is where the i3 is objectively, bafflingly bad. Low-effort, no angles, too much empty space. Lights look incredibly cheap compared to the iX3, and a generational step back from the laser tail-lights on the refreshed i4.

It’s an issue with all electric cars tbh. But the size of the grilles makes it very apparent. Just because you don’t need an engine cooling vent on an electric car doesn’t mean we don’t still want premium materials. I get the need some plastic for sensors, but definitely not as much as they use on a lot of these cars.

Because the i4 was currently the only EV “sedan” in this price range BMW was selling. It ends production in end of this year around same time i3 production is starting. There will be a new i4 but it will be coupe and convertible only according to insiders on forums that from what I have seen are very accurate. No more “Gran Coupe”

They're done making the i4 because the i3 exists to replace it. The only reason they used the 4 over the 3 for the EV to begin with is bc the Gran Coupe is more aerodynamic than the sedan, plus the face is more "striking". In China they have an i3 instead of an i4 because they love proper sedans and long wheelbases, so the i3 is based on the LWB 3 series that's also exclusive to China.

I think its a decent enough looking car. I don't like it as a rehash of the i3 though. If you looked at the original i3 it was definitely goofy, but it tried new things that honestly I wish were refined further. I loved the focus on sustainable materials with the original i3. I hope the new one continues with it. The hemp interior was cool. We're entering an era where electric cars are less about the environment and just another option, I'd love to see companies continue to push for even more sustainability.

This. IMHO the 3 series going back to a stocky shorter nosed look is the right call. The 5 and 7 were always the long hooded ones. In profile the proportions of the new one are very similar to 90ties 3 series. I think BMW is also trying to appeal to current non-BMW drivers who didn’t like the buck teeth. For the first time they are my shortlist. so it’s working.

I want to know at what point car designers decided they were allergic to body lines and refuse to do anything interesting with the side profile of a car. I think the overall design is great, much better than anything BMW has been pumping out for the last 5 years, but that side profile is so boring and the silhouette isn’t interesting enough to carry it. Cue the inevitable meltdown when the size and weight get revealed though.

Plain and classic lines are also more timeless. The design ages well. Bold designs age fast. Look how dated the E60 5 series and E65 7 series looked once the F10 and F1 came out. Especially since the previous gens(E39 & E38) still looked fresh and classic. They still do to this day.

The E60 looks much more modern than the E39, what are you talking about? Especially the refresh with the newer lights. You can like the E39, not saying you shouldn't, but it looks much less "fresh" and is very clearly a 90s car. The E60 could pass as new until about 2015 but now is clearly also an older model.

The first revision of any European OEM has plain sides and then they can simply add character lines for a facelift and attach plastic cladding for even one more facelift. Look at the Atlas or NMS Passat for an example of this. I also noticed that Honda does this (Accord, Civic, CRV).

This seems to be the new design language that BMW is using for all of their new vehicles. Just look at the side profile and body lines (or lack thereof) of the new X3, 5-Series, and 7-Series. They all lack proper, defined body lines and creases that BMW's used to have. They're all just a boring flat surface now.

We'll have to see what BMW can do. An M3 on that platform would need to be lower and wider to have proper sports sedan dimensions. The Vision Driving Experience [concept](https://www.caranddriver.com/photos/g63800520/bmw-vision-driving-experience-concept-gallery/) they showed last year actually ended up being very close to a sportier version of the OP images. If you imagine a less bulky rear (the concept has suction fans), then it's a pretty decent stance IMO. I think it'll have a pretty big battery for all the power it needs so it won't be light. For a true lightweight EV sports car I think we'll have to see what Longbow and Alpine can do. And then the Audi Concept C will probably split the difference between them and the EV M3.

I’ll take a lease too as long as they don’t try to gouge their customers again like they did the first couple of years the i4 was out. People can’t escape their awful 2023 i4 leases currently. I say that as a 2025 i4 owner, by the way. It made 5 billion times more sense to lease brand-new than from swapalease. It was **hundreds** of dollars difference per month.

Honestly, it looks more _practical_ than the current 3er. That interior room is so boxy like an old E36, I love that. The front- ugh. Not a fan, I didn't mind it in the concepts. Maybe I need to see it in a different light rather than these kind of artsy shots. But the LED mascara outline is a bit odd.

As I am not a fan of the 2series, I am also not an immediate fan of the overall proportions on this i3. I might need to give it some time. That being said, kudos to BMW for having the courage to redesign their cars so drastically and to bring some change on the market! Even a bigger kudos for the new technology, I did a test drive with the iX3 two weekends ago and it drives excellent! An SUV that doesn’t drive and feel like an SUV, feels very natural, great cornering and the braking is extremely smooth. Put the grille of the i3 on the iX3 and I am pretty sure it would even sell more.

I don't love the stubby front end but I probably shouldn't complain about cars not being bigger than they need to be. The grille treatment is honestly awesome IMO and I'm now super curious how the ICE variant of this will look when they reveal the G50. I originally was of the opinion that the Vision Neue Klasse X concept looked better than the sedan because of the double kidney in the middle but now my opinion has flipped after seeing both in production.

Apart from the LED overload up front, the exterior styling is decent. I don't think it's better than the current design language but it's not necessarily worse either. On the other hand, the parallelogram infotainment screen is mind-blowingly stupid. I'm sure BMW is ready with a load of marketing bullshit to rationalize that design, but it's just superfluous in the worst possible way.
