Reminds me of the style of Stoke-on-Trent station front.

wow.. i had no idea it looked so beautiful. the side by side is an abomination.
it was turned into some post industrial wasteland looking thing.

Im certainly not defending the new station, but back in 1967 it will have been a completely different styling to what people were accustomed to - probably deemed "clean" or "modern" whereas the older frontage would hark back to "the olden days". Its not hard to imagine the Labour government of the time wanting to be seen to actively break from what it saw as tradition, in many aspects of life.

British Railways (as it was then) wanted to make a modernist statement with the Euston to Liverpool/Manchester electrification. So we got the new Euston station, which involved demolition of the iconic Euston Arch (actually a propylaeum) and numerous WCML stations of various origins replaced by the modular CLASP system.
CLASP was almost the equivalent of a 1960s IKEA flat pack, where modules were delivered to site and clipped together on a pre-prepared foundation to produce station buildings in the modernist idiom with all the facilities 1960s passengers needed.
They have not generally worn well, however a small number have actually been listed. π

That is sad. I think similarly when I walk through Great Linford every day past these beautiful older buildings and then I get to the shops and it looks like absolute shit. They didn't even try.
buford419@reddit
fucking shameful, honestly.
Srapture@reddit
I can't believe that's what we could've had π

They only thing redeeming about Bletchley station now is when you walk out and itβs behind you.
Such a travesty to have torn down a beautiful building and replaced it with that.
butthole_network@reddit
What a travesty. Bletchley train station is at best, a dingy box. Why would someone look at this and want to tear it down π

Absolutely heartbreaking

Nothing short of architectural terrorism
