Gaffers Tape

If you're not yet in the know about gaffers tape, well youre missing out. As a prepping item, its invaluable.
Created in ww2 to waterproof ammo cans crossing the channel into France, its a durable cloth based tape that you can easily tear into equal width strips, sticks to almost anything, and doesn't leave any residue after removal.
I keep old credit cards lashed with about 30 feet of it in every backpack, and every vehicle gets a roll of it instead of duct tape.
Taping up windows after a storm, don't have to worry about peeling varnish or paint off trim or ruining walls. Taping up a busted car window, or a rear tail light that got knocked loose, I've done both.
Ive used white gaffers tape to hide cables behind tvs, black to tape down carpets to tile when elderly relatives visit. You can patch vinyl seats with it, patch up ripped gear with it, waterproof things with it, basically everything duct tape can do, you can also do with gaffers tape, but usually better. Ive even made bandages with it and gauze pads for larger wounds at work.
I will admit that Gorilla tape is superior to gaffers tape for patching things up and needing them to stay patched up longer without repairs.
In a GWOT type situation, you can tape off Scopes or lenses since its a matte tape, without having all that gunk residue stick if you need to remove it later. Ive used it with a strip of pipe insulation to run power cords out my window during outages, with no air leaks. You can seal up whole rooms or windows with plastic in the winter to stay warmer. You can tape sleeves and ankles down, straps on your gear down, slings to your rifles, and since it peels off itself easily and re attaches you can make adjustments later easily

Does anybody know how gaffers tape compares to gym floor tape? The gym floor tape is shiny and smooth, but is that the main difference?
GainbfShameFOH@reddit
Gym floor tape is shiny and vinyl based, gaff tape is cloth based. Gym floor tape is much less expensive but they have different purposes. I buy mine from a website www.touressentialsla.com I found it to be cheapest there and free shipping last time I ordered

Just going to point out that gaffer tape is not waterproof. The adhesive sometimes holds up pretty well, but the tape itself definitely isn't. Still a very useful thing to keep around for certain use cases.
It was designed for use by gaffers in the late 50's. The whole point being that it was matte, versatile, and left minimal or no residue for taping up film-stage wiring.
Chisignal@reddit
Yeah gaffer tape is great and I have several rolls at all times, but it really sounds like OP is talking about regular duct tape lol
DannyWarlegs@reddit (OP)
No Ive worked in theater and AV for a long time, I know the difference. I even mentioned at the bottom of my post how I know superior tapes exist for longer term usage on certain things, but on most tapes, gaffers tape is superior
Usernamenotdetermin@reddit
I’ve used gaffers tape for decades, friend who carried a video camera on his shoulder for a living told me about it a long time ago. Your origin story seems a bit off, but I can’t open the computer to verify currently. It works wonders for many things. It beats duct tape on many things. I threw away half a roll not long ago. Yes, works great for temporary fixes during storm events and such. No it’s not the end all be all. Stock a roll, certainly. I like the guerilla tape better.
DannyWarlegs@reddit (OP)
So the origin is in Johnson & Johnson making cloth backed adhesives in the 40s which they called "duck tape". The formulation evolved and split several times, giving us duct tapes, and cloth back tapes. Actual "gaffers tape" came about in the 50s with a matte cloth low tack tape being needed for stage and screen use.
I agree, its not an end all be all tape, but it beats out duct tape on a lot of things, especially when you want a temporary use and masking tape wont work
Pastvariant@reddit
Yeah, I have basically never seen gaffer tape hold up when exposed to water. I view it as interior/light duty use only.
DannyWarlegs@reddit (OP)
I fixed a tail light on my truck with it, and it held up for a good year with rain, snow, etc. I replaced it, lasted another year before I switched to gorilla tape which lasted the last 7.
DadsWhoDeadlift@reddit
I was gonna say gorilla tape when I started this comment 😂 I have a window that’s been held with it for nearly 4 years now. Probably as strong as JB Weld 😂
DannyWarlegs@reddit (OP)
Yeah its holding my tail light on strong through everything I put that truck through. Probably not DOT legal, but it works!
Jumpy_Decision3657@reddit
there are many knock off brands out there and 99% of them are absolutely no good. Pro gaff is the only one that I found that doesn’t completely suck and I use a lot of this stuff. Source: I’m a photographer, filmmaker, theatrical artist.
limit35@reddit
Came here to say this. I use it in field recording and I have used fantastic gaffer tape and garbage tape that either lacks adhesive or has too much. It is great stuff if you buy a proper brand of tape.
I don't use gaff tape outside of recording situations ($$) and find different forms of cloth or paper tape work well.
DannyWarlegs@reddit (OP)
I agree! ProGaff is the best brand. Our company bought knock off to save some money once, and before we even used it all, they were back to ProGaff.
LeopardFragrant115@reddit
Gorilla tape has lousy adhesive compared to duct tape. Might be rough to rip but it lets go by itself a couple of days later from many common surfaces. Doesn’t even stick to itself well, neither sticky to outer nor sticky to sticky sides.
DannyWarlegs@reddit (OP)
Yeah I dunno what you got, but ive had Gorilla tape holding my tail light on my truck for over 7 years. Only reason I had to replace it was because I had to take it off to change a bulb.
I have some on a few old cards, and pulling it off the roll is much harder than peeling regular duct tape
Appropriate_View8753@reddit
You must have gotten a bad batch or something. My experience with gorilla tape is the opposite of yours. The generic grey / store brand duct tape is usually junk like you describe so if you want a lasting duct tape for repairs use Gorilla tape or T-Rex.
Habosh@reddit
Gaffers tape was invented in 1959.
DannyWarlegs@reddit (OP)
Johnson & Johnson invented it between 42 and 43. While modern day duct tape, gaffers tape, etc are different, back then it was all cotton duck adhesive backed cloth tape.
Gaffers tape and duct tape today both come from the same original "duck tape" or "100 mile an hour" tape of ww2.

ELECTRICAL TAPE!!
bluewing_olive@reddit
Gaff tape will 100% leave residue if left longer than a week or so
DannyWarlegs@reddit (OP)
Usually I don't see residue until the tape breaks down snd that depends on the heat and location its under
Sufficient-Past-9722@reddit
It depends on the specific adhesive they're using, and different brands make it differently. The kind with a slightly tacky (not smooth) topside is best imo
pile_of_fish@reddit
Brand definitely matters. Amazon is full of cheap stuff. We use progaff on our stage, it's great.
Sufficient-Past-9722@reddit
The two I have on my shelf right now are ProTapes (from B&H), which is excellent, and one from Tesa (bit European 3M equivalent in tape), which is unfortunately not as grippy, but overall OK.
AppointedForrest@reddit
It's been a long time since I worked in TV production but whatever we got from MarkerTek (pretty cool website if you're into A/V stuff) was really good about having a strong hold and not leaving residue.
I should caveat that and say I don't remember what it cost as I wasn't paying for it and we typically only left something taped for the length of a shoot, so anywhere from a few hours to a week tops.
Big_Rod_In_Philly@reddit
And here my wife and I have been using it just for bondage for years!
DannyWarlegs@reddit (OP)
Bondage tape works much better. Kinda what its made for

Goon tape is the goat

Is gaffers tape similar to painters tape?

Hockey tape for more money
tavysnug@reddit
Kind of like it and duct-tape had a weird, cloth-based step child.
BrokenEight38@reddit
Not at all. Closer to duct tape.
Astrolander97@reddit
Id like to add aluminum ducting tape to the conversation.
With a minimal amount this heat resistant tape can actually seal pressurized lines to a point. If your radiator hose is cracked alutape tape will get you home.
Historical_Course587@reddit
This. HVAC tape is like duct tape on steroids.
Busy_Raccoon8379@reddit
Learned something new, I always thought gaffers tape is what Brits etc. called duct tape- didn't know they were different
LondonStu@reddit
As a Brit who's worked in theatre for a couple decades (and used it pretty much every day), I always thought duct tape was Americans called gaffer tape.
Glad-Barracuda2243@reddit
I LOVE Gaffers tape!! I’m in the middle of a move and sent my sister to go grab me tape. She can’t back with Scotch pecking tape. I went back and grabbed Gaffers. I also grabbed extra rolls for the very things you suggest above and threw them in my box of tools. I won’t be without it, and use it for everything.
CanIOverThinkIt@reddit
$$$, however, if it protects your preps, I totally understand. Just keep the price in mind.
ishootthedead@reddit
This is a bad tip.
As a photographer/videographer who has worked with pretty much every brand of gaffers tape over the years, I would never use it for any of the uses mentioned.
Ripley1046@reddit
I’ve been a theatre tech for 25 years. Gaff is amazing. If you leave it in for more than a year, it will leave nasty liquidy glue behind, but that’s in specific situations. For a temporary use it’s unbeatable. Not all gaff is created equal. Shur-tape is superior to all. Pro-gaff is hit garbage. It’s not cheap, but generally worth the expense. I use gorilla tape as well, light years better than duct tape, not as good as gaff, but also 1/3 the price or less.
cleverpaws101@reddit
I like gaff tape but I find if the surface is the least bit wet it does not stick at all
CopperRose17@reddit
This sounds like a miracle substance. I am going to try it.
silverbk65105@reddit
aecdote; my wife was a professional working musician, always used and had gaffers tape. I was an electrician so I did everything with electrical tape. Now we coexist together with the best of both worlds.
Buy and use what works for you.
whiskey_piker@reddit
It was helpful of you to include the exact brand you use that has worked so well. Oh, wait.
bigghc@reddit
People that set up tradeshow booths love it, because everything is getting torn down within a week so it comes back up nice compared to duct tape. So it is great stuff, but pretty spendy so I still prefer duct tape depending on the application. But I agree with OP everyone should have some of this stuff it's awesome.
Emotional_Seat_7424@reddit
I did not know that, and I think Gaffa had it places as you say - but end of day I prefer a multiuse adhesive and feel that practicality just makes duct tape the clear winner - and in peace time you can use adhesive remover if necessary to remove residues at a later point.
MentalMiddenHeap@reddit
Its great for certain things, but terrible for other things. The average person is still better served by duct/gorilla tape, especially for the price.
Seconding the person that it can still leave residue. Its just a lot less likely too with short term use. The crew I worked with was pretty quick to get it off after it needed to be there to avoid damaging locations that were already stretching the budget
IGetNakedAtParties@reddit
You're missing gaffers tape and duck tape. Duck tape made from duck cloth was invented in ww2. After the war is was often used in HVAC so got renamed duct tape. Duck tape was also used by film and stage crews, specifically gaffers responsible for rigging and electricals. Gaffers needed a weaker adhesive which didn't leave a residue, and one with specific optical properties like mat black or metalic. Real gaffers tape is actually not as sticky as duct tape for this reason as it is meant for temporary work. All of the properties you described are applicable to duck / duct tape, not gaffers tape.
