Yokohama closing one of its US tire factories (Salem, VA) on March 18th

Is this a sign of further downturn to come? The article says the production will be relocated to Mexico once Yokohama’s factory there is fully built.

Just typical corporate greed/ capitalism going on. Much cheaper to make the tires in Mexico and then ship them North.

In fact, many tire manufacturers are moving their tire factories to third world and even China. They also do this in most world, not only America. When I visited Taiwanese auto parts store and even local Costco tire centers, I’ve seen so many tires coming from Thailand and China.

Michelin has been manufacturing tires in Thailand for ages.

I should’ve also mentioned Michelin, Bridgestone, and a few others are also/have closed tire factories since early 2025

??? This has nothing to do with globalism Globalism is great and if you think it's not true than you need to get informed

It's great if you aren't making the products in countries losing the manufacturing, or depended on the business of those people. The idea job losses are offset by newer ones in other areas is flawed the moment you factor in those new jobs might be located far away, or require a large amount of re-education, or might not bring the same satisfaction as making tangible goods. I'm using the definition of globalism as encouraging free trade and allowing countries to leverage whatever advantage they have (labor, knowledge, human capital), resulting in sweat shops that undercut costs by allowing companies to treat underpaid people as disposable. Unfettered globalism is dystopian.

>The move comes as Yokohama is building a plant in Mexico. >It is important to note there is no connection between that facility and the one in Salem closing, but the Mexico plant is set to make those same consumer and light truck tires. That is literally a contradiction not a sentence apart. It's related, the plant in Mexico is making the tires that would have been made in the US.

To my understanding it was a pro union plant moving that production to Mexico saves them a small fortune I'm sure tariffs didn't help rubber trees don't grow in the states.

Most tires are made with synthetic rubber.
View on Reddit #80701291

nitrojunky24@reddit

It's usually a mix of natural and synthetic rubber

Can't be, must be fake news. R/Conservative told me tariffs would prevent this. /s

That sub is so heavily moderated and filled with bots it's insane

Yes. Every word of that is correct. But it's also for pretty much all front page subs. I got banned on news several weeks ago for suggesting on a sub-comment that Iran's government might not be very peaceful...in a thread about Iran murdering 30k protesters lol. Got banned from guncontrol many years ago for explaining some nuance of current/existing state-level gun control laws to somebody who made an incorrect (but reasonable) assumption. I presume they just checked my post history in other subs and nuked me on "principle". I forget exactly why I got banned from gundeals It's literally just a place for product/seller reviews, not even political.  Point being, reddit is pretty awesome at finding you niche content to suit what you want, but it takes an unusually accept sense to skepticism and some experience to be able to tell the grass from the astroturfing, and even then it can take time to be sure what you're looking at. Between the bots, the mods, and the natural human group-think, it can leave and the most down to earth person scratching their head.

Any person trying to justify this Iran war is clearly a right winger. Sounds like they were spot on with banning you.

Reddit isn't reality, none of it. It's completely full of deluded tribalists that there isn't one part anchored to real life. It's a text version of Sims.
