In NZ while there is variety between schools, generally there is a lot more respect for teachers than there is here. If I was teaching and a student started being obnoxious towards me or disruptive to get a laugh from his mates, other students would normally tell him to shut up and tell him he was being annoying and an attention seeker. Other students would say "sorry about him miss". If a student was particularly awful to me the other students wouldn't have their back and if they needed to tell someone from the senior leadership team what happened they would be honest. In England the "don't snitch" culture is so strong even in upper middle class good schools that when students were being hugely disruptive and rude, if I sent another kid to go fetch another teacher for back up they'd come back and say they couldn't find anyone. The Us vs Them mentality is so strong that the teacher is seen as the enemy no matter what. Doesn't matter how friendly, calm, patient, or relatable you are, or how strict you are. Doesn't matter how fun or interesting your lessons are. And even the kids that want to learn and I can tell are annoyed by their disruptive peers, they'd rather put up with it and let them get away with it than help you to stamp it out because even if it's negatively affecting their education at least they're not a snitch.

This was a huge shocker when I went to university (UK). Of course it's a bunch of teens suddenly living away from home - I anticipated a bit of pissing around in lectures and such. But people would literally talk loudly right next to you in lectures or put literally zero input into group discussion. I was often sat there wondering why you'd even go to uni just to piss about.

Because it's good to actually participate with the class and share your ideas. China has a loooooong and very interesting history that often leads to interesting perspectives on things. Especially when part of the coursework is on Farewell My Concubine and their perspective is eminently relevant. Even if they're shite ideas, at least you're showing that you want to help people, instead of leaving the other students to pick up your slack while you talk about whatever the hot WeChat gossip is. The real question is how the students who suspiciously never engage with the work in any productive way nevertheless get top grades at a university with many Chinese donors with attendees from wealthy Chinese families paying double what British students pay on tuition. We'll never know...

Some of the schools I worked in had phones in the room and you could dial 0 for reception. Others had a computer programme for taking the register where you could click a bell button and it would alert SLT to come to the classroom. Others have an email address to message. The issue is that a lot of the time SLT either wouldn't show up or would take half an hour to get there (half an hour where the kid refusing to leave will continue to make it impossible to teach). Once I told a student that this was their last chance to do the right thing and if they refused they would be removed. They refused. I did On Call. The student smirked and said "nobody will come". She was right. She then spent the rest of the lesson tearing up paper into tiny pieces and throwing it all around the room including in the faces of students trying to work. I had to spend my lunchtime picking it up (i couldn't let the teacher who had the room period 5 walk into a mess) and no student offered to help me. When the on call system doesn't work, students know there is no consequence and they can behave as they like. So sending a student out to get me another member of staff is the only option left. And when that student "can't find anyone" well... cool guess nobody is learning this lesson. Thanks kid.

My wife has the same problem. Calls the On Call team and... no one shows up. How is she meant to exert authority when SLT make it clear that they can't be bothered dealing with bad behaviour? I feel bad for the kids that do what to learn. If I were a parent with a child in some of those classes I'd be at the school demanding to know why they were happy allowing disruptive behaviour in classrooms to the detriment of other students' learning.

When I was a teenager drinking on the streets one night we saw a fully grown man walking the street wearing a suit. Some older kids we knew of through school was walking the opposite direction and out of nowhere they kicked the absolute shit out of him, for no apparent reason and then just continued walking. We approached him and he was dazed as fuck and I think he thought we were the people who attacked him because he said something to the effect of "go on just get it over with I'm sick of this place anyway". We explained we saw what happened and wanted to walk him home to make sure he gets in safe. He was pretty bloodied up, turns out he had just left the pub after being at his Mums funeral all day and he was the father of girl in our year at school. She wasn't someone I knew very well, but I knew of her and I remember thinking for the rest of the night how horrible it must have been for her to see her Dad get home from her Grandma's funeral in that state and after witnessing it, it was literally for nothing other than their own fun.

That is awful. Absolute scum those kids beating him up. Good for you for helping, so many don't. When I was 16 I got beaten up in a random street attack by two girls. Never been in a fight in my life at that point, I was pretty scared and panicked. I fell to the floor after one of them ran up behind me dropkickingbme in the back so I had no chance, couldn't get up as the two girls were just hitting me n pulling my hair out. In the end I had to beg them to stop. But the worst feeling that effected me mentally for about 10 years after.. was that noone helped me, people walked past, adults and older kids, they walked past while it was happening and then when the girls had done with me, noone came to help. I just stumbled up the street home. It made me feel invisible and unworthy. As I got older I sort of vowed to myself never to sit and do nothing and to stand up for people or help as much as I can. I wouldn't want anyone to feel like I did.

I agree to an extent. I'm shy of involving authorities because unreasonable power over-reach does happen. But, I run front and back cameras on my bike and I report all the close, shitty and dangerous overtakes and every single one attracts positive action from the police. There are tons of technically illegal incidents that also occur but I only bother with the more actively dangerous and aggressive incidents. No, I'm not a dash-cam warrior (the opposite, I stay meek because all the footage needs to be submitted, and my armour is made of lycra). I sometimes feel like a sniveling little shit, but I hope I'm doing my bit to make roads more attractive to cycle on for everyone.

The best thing about this is that it's completely Indian to block access from a genuine driveway, even for the Council. But it isn't, so his car is going to be stuck there until they fix his mess. *Then* he'll have to apply for the work to actually drop the kerb properly, which the Council could refuse. All to save the few hundred quid to do it properly in the first place. I have no sympathy for people like this, in my last home I loved on a street where nearly every house had widened their driveway and ours was the only one with a dropped kerb.

I think you're overestimating both the extent and value of council planning with this kind of thing, having witnessed plenty of such planning in action. Ideally, they shouldn't be putting street lights directly in the centre of somebody's house anyway. Fair point about preventing other people parking, though I would argue that most driveways are as wide, if not narrower, than the length of one car that has now been taken off the road anyway. In balance, my life is far more likely to be made worse by council involvment than by someone parking in their drive/front garden, and I'm far more concerned with the power the council wield than one man causing a lamp post to be installed an extra metre to the left. So long as the driveway is not wider than the length of the car, then I'd squarely file it under 'no harm done, none of my business'. The council should be able to offer that to everyone at a reasonable price, barring very extreme circumstances. Publishing standards would also open up the work to alternative contractors, so the council and their tender-chasing subcontracting companies don't hold a monopoly and dictate prices. But then again, access to view many safety standards in this country costs thousands, so there's probably zero chance of that happening. They'd also probably have to invent the standards.

Because the Council owns the road, and they're responsible for maintaining it. They get to decide where new connections to the road are made. They get to decide if it's safe to put a driveway there - it could be near an interesting, or on a blind corner, or any of a number of places that just aren't suitable without extra safety measures. There could be subsurface pipes or wires or manholes that need to be considered. The road outside your house is not yours to do what you want with - and that includes any pavement and kerbs.

That resulted in a couple of near misses. They rang me up the next day to say they're contacting the company that put it up and by the end of the next day there was a van there to take it away. It had been up there for about a month and I always meant to email them about it but never got round to it. It was a nice surprise that it got sorted so quickly tho. Been reading about how some councils take months or years to sort out stuff.

The thing with people ripping up pavement is that there are generally other things burried beneath the pavement, and you can't guarantee they're where the drawings say they are. For example, the power cable for the streetlights could be the correct distance beneath the pavement, or it could be just underneath the stones and an inch of sand. So when Muppet McFuckstick drills into a nice live power cable / gas main / internet cable / etc and takes out the service for the area and/or gets himself injured/killed, the council wind up with (legal) paperwork they'd rather avoid. In short; unless you know exactly what you're doing, don't go ripping up infrastructure.

On street parking is a public resource, everyone has access to it and everyone has to share. It's possible that you sometimes have to walk a little bit to your car as someone else parked in front of your house. But that's part of the nature of sharing. By installing a private driveway you are privatising one or more likely two of these public spaces so that it becomes functionally quite different. The local council has power to put policies in place regarding where is or isn't appropriate for this privatisation to take place.

You are in the right, jobs like that cause other problems when they're bodged - if not done properly the surrounding pavement and kerb will up knackered with water ingress when it gets cold and the water expands. One thing I do want to ask - where do you live that a dropped kerb only costs £800? I'm in a local authority area that is classed as "deprived" (although I'm in one of the nicer bits) and my quote for a dropped kerb last year was just shy of £3,000.

We were told we'd be £300 for kerb lowering about 4 years ago so instead (we'd just payed £££ to have the drive laid and gates installed) we put a long strip of shaped wood (no idea what it'd be called or how it was done, my ex dealt with it) but we had easy access to our driveway and the road/pavement were still usable for others. That said, the (council installed) drop kerb at my house is the shoddiest crap job you can imagine. They cracked one of the kerb stones and the other ones aren't lined up properly. I'd be very surprised to learn they did any checking of utilities. I agree about pavement parking though. All of the pavements here are sunken where the car wheels park, causing puddles when it rains.

It was less than 6 inches in front of the kerb and was only in front of our house, which only we had parked in front of for the couple of years we had lived there. We then had one car in the drive and our other in front of it where the wood was so there no protruding into the road nor blocking parking 😊. I'm a conscientiousness neighbour and hate altercations so we made sure both next doors were OK with it too (wee granny one side who always had a lot of family visiting, big family on the other) and no complaints for the next couple of years we lived there.

I'm not even 30 yet. It used to be that I'd ask first, but rarely does that actually work. Best case scenario, you just get ignored. Normally they'll tell you to piss off or something and you're stuck arguing for a quater hour. A new family moved in next door, horrible bunch. Littering all out in the street, kids throwing rocks at animals and two of the older boys even mugged a young autistic girl. I figured it wasn't worth getting into it with those types of people, I'm too old to be doing that sort of shit anymore. So I emailed the council. About 3 days later they'd gotten a letter, the police had stopped by, the land lord had gotten in touch with them and told them to wise up AND someone from the council stopped by to check on all the mess they were making. They panicked, the kids calmed right the fuck down, the outside of the house was cleared up and I haven't caught any of the cunts slinging shit at any of the streets cats since. Honestly, I'm just going to be a grass from now on. Fuck it, why was a giving chavs a chance in the first place?

No, iv been hoping to abuse this system for myself recently. Got a neighbour that has 3 people in a house and owns 5 cars, we all need to park on the road and it's kinda hard to get a spot, they have a clapped out range rover (as of last MOT around 210k miles from 2000) that has just been sat in a spot for a good while taking one of the spots and I was hoping it wasn't taxed so I could get it towed but now I'm hoping that it fails it's MOT in about a month (because that means it can't be on the road). That car is never used and I hate the arseholes that own it (3 range rovers all in the small area where it's safe to park), it was actually sat for over a month with a completely flat tire and if they would have drove it then it would of cut the tire to bits and they would of damage the rim a fair bit.

I generally hate busybody neighbours, but have seen the quality of this mans workmanship on his own house, i know the next thing he would have done is do a crappy job of pourung a concrete slope (he did similiar on a side pedestrian gate a while back) it would look shite, be dodgy to walk on, and block the road gutters. I was working as a subby builder, the gaffer told our client we could do the drop kerb for him. I proceeded to explain to the gaffer and the client that we were not accredited by the council to do work on the pavement and that we could not in fact “get it done” the gaffer went on a rant that it was a straight forward job, so I asked him to point out to me where the services ran ie electric water gas. Needless to say I was looking for a new job by end of the day. Pavements aren’t to be fucked around with.

That’s it exactly, if you don’t have access to the surveys you have no idea what you may damage. This was a fair few years back, but the street I’m on now is terrible for parking and many home owners have taken there front walls down and have started parking in there front yards without having a drop kerb put in. I’ve reported every one of them as the damage they may cause over time is unknown. Ultimately it will by my council tax that has to pay to put it right and with how stretched councils are with funding there are better things my council tax should be spent on, it shouldn’t be subsidising people who want to save a few quid while driving brand new range rovers and BMW’s

When I had my driveway extended they actually charged me less as I was willing to do most of the work, digging out, replacing curbs, etc, but I did do it properly. They just had to come and do the tarmac. So it may be fine... However, I reported someone down the street for something similar a few years ago as they obviously didn't have a clue what they were doing. They got prosecuted for that, and an illegal extension, and a porch... Ended up with the house being auctioned off, for not very much, and the council probably took most of that. I went to look, wouldn't touch that crazy even for the 60% discount the buyers got.

I reported my neighbours for an anti-social incident. I won’t explain, as it’s part of a far bigger thing. However, I worried that I was being an “old man”. Later, I called 999, as I could hear a baby screaming and the lights had been off for 2-3 weeks. Cue 6 police cars and the neighbour being taken away. The kids were removed, they had injuries. They haven’t been back since. There have been lots of incidents of abuse by parents where their kids have been abused, or even worse, killed. Being an “old man” isn’t always a bad thing. It’s trying to keep the neighbourhood a safe place, for everybody. You’re trying to abide by the law. That’s not a bad thing.

Only if you have permission of the houseowner that uses it for access - s86 TMA 2004. Otherwise, provided the local council have applied to be a special enforcement area (and I don't think there's any that haven't) then you can't park in front of a dropped one. That's for England and Wales, no idea re Scotland though :)

I never got this. My dad used it as a bit of an insult to his brother who had his new car on finance in the 70s. I’m not sure having a fully expensed company car should allow you to look down on your brother for treating his car as a monthly expense. People hade different priorities and if leasing a Range Rover makes you happy then lease a Range Rover. I know at least two people who have a few quid and say they are by far the best car they have owned.

It’s broken my mirror and the trim on my skirt, the parents don’t stop them but encourage it, enough to put her newborn baby in it’s pram right behind my car as I’m about to leave with my disabled child. If you live on a main/busy road then you have to pay around £1500 per day for "Lane Rental".

There wasn’t a problem, but it was just a bit funny. Basically we live in the end house of a road. Road signs apparently should be on both sides of an entrance to a road. When the people opposite did their extension/driveway they ripped out the road sign and skipped it. When we started doing ours a lady a few doors up had a bit of a panic that we would do the same and came out for a chat with the guy from the council when he visited to approve our curb drop. She was worried we would do the same and no one would be able to ID the road. We ended up getting the shitty old rusty road sign that sat on our boundary swapped for a new one so all good.

It takes them weeks to respond to anything (e.g. emptying the neighbours incorrectly filled bins and terrible mould situation, leaking gutters ect). This bungalow was built in 2021 which makes it even worse. She(and also, mostly me) pay more than the original 3 bed she had. Disgusting. Completely in the right, its what we all pay taxes for! Good on you and them resolving so quickly.

Very good question. I dont know if i would have contacted council if he was obviously broke, but if i thought he couldnt afford to have it done properly I would have more sympathy. My neighbour decided to start removing his driveway today with an electric hanner drill and big swings of a sledgehammer. Cue rocks flying everywhere and general confusion as to why it was all taking so long to achieve much. They've given up for the day now, lots of rocks strewn across the path, kerbstones removed leaving big holes etc. I might try the twitter route myself after reading this.

Councils don't mess around when it comes to dropped kerbs. A guy on my street built himself a driveway and started driving up the existing kerb to access his newly block paved front garden, council came out and told him to pack it in. He kept driving up the kerb so they came one afternoon whilst he was at work and installed 2 concrete bollards outside his house to physically stop him which he then cried about claiming it had knocked thousands off the value of his home.

I contacted the council for the first time ever and did so 2 times last year to great effect One was the local big bin which had looked like someone had smashed into it so one wheel was bent enough to make it veer into the road and not brake properly. Looked dangerous and it also didn't open properly. Other was for a sudden influx of dog poo on our road. It's a very popular road for dog walkers walking to and from the local beach. I actually caught a couple purposely leave dog poo outside our flat and that was enough to report a check/clean up and I put info about the guilty party too but didn't imagine it would amount to much. Within a week all the street and a nearby one was cleaned up so it definitely helped.

Not at all. And good on you. My dropped kerb cost around £2k for the planning and the council to physically re set in place. Extortionate, I know. If you are driving a new Range Rover and go around doing stuff like that fair play on being caught out. If it’s anything like Richmond council he will be facing a rather large fine and a permanent refusal for off street parking. You can also get a daily ticket for parking at the front of your house without a dropped kerb. This would be classed as parking or driving over the pavement. Unfortunately I got caught out as in my area you have to physically complete your off street before the council will drop the kerb in order to make sure you stick to the proposed plans. I came home one day to excitedly see my new dropped kerb and a ticket on my windscreen. Learnt my lesson that day.

Honestly, I feel you. Our next door neighbour has a reactive dog which, every time we go out in our garden, barks and growls at us and our two whippets through the adjoining gate. Drives us insane. The owner does fuck all to bring their dog inside their house so we’re normally sat outside trying to enjoy our garden with non stop loud barking and growling at us. We’ve tried covering some of the gate with bamboo and pretty solar lights and some decorative wood, but the issue hasn’t stopped. The neighbour is lovely but can’t control her bloody dog and lets it run riot so now we can’t enjoy our own garden. Part of me now wants to make a noise complaint to the council (this dog also barks during the night, day, basically when anything moves) but wonder if anything would actually be done

It would potentially cost a lot more than £800. My local council, in the North West, quotes minimum of £1500 for the work, plus legal costs for getting planning permission. On top of that, there's the fact that many planning applications are rejected out of hand for no reason. Plus the councils tend to not let you just hire someone to do the work, but require you to pay them to do it, and then they'll do it on their own time frame. I know someone who waited 3 years, and that was before covid. So he may have attempted to do it the right way and been willing to pay, but either the council refused for no good reason, or told him to join a multi year queue. Doesn't mean he was right to do what he did, but perhaps let's you understand his mindset and be a little less annoyed at him.
