Curious - how do Osprey pilots log their time? Fixed, rotary, both!

In a log book I’d assume…

Powered lift. Might not get much fixed or rotary time because of that, but still seem to be pretty hirable on the civilian side

If you survive flying one of those for a career without dying, I’m convinced you’re invincible and should be hired wherever.

It never ceases to amaze me how many otherwise smart people believe this sort of thing. Half the time they’re some baby CFI regurgitating what they read online. I’ll take 1000 hours in an Osprey over 100 in a piston single anytime.

I'm really trying to understand your comment. Best I can come up with is that you might be referring to relative safety records?

I’m saying the type of people who make this type of “OsPreY is a DEatHtrAp” comments are often found in the seat of a C172 at a sketchy CFI mill and don’t see the inherent contradiction.

I gotcha. Tend to agree with your sentiment.

Well, anyone would take 1000 hours over 100 hours regardless of the aircraft

I mean for all the people who love to act like the Osprey is so scary, so many of them have no problem ripping around in an aircraft significantly more dangerous. The V22 is about average for anything in the military that hovers.

Flown with a small handful of Osprey pilots and they were all awesome. Really excellent pilots, even better stories.

Pretty sure its multi-engine turbine. At least judging from the V-22 guys i know. I know none have the powered lift on their civilian certs, just fixed wing

A guy I got hired with has PL on his civilian ticket.

Osprey pilots that get the civilian certs typically have Fixed Wing ASEL, AMEL, and RW. You could get PLIFT I suppose but I haven’t met anyone who did, because most guys get their civilian certs after winging but before they fly the V22. By the time they get the V22 training done, nobody wants to go talk to a FSDO or whoever to add it when it doesn’t help. The only difference the PLIFT vs FW distinction makes is to the airlines, who already see that it’s V22 time, and how they accept the hours are up to them and it varies. If we had to log based on the configuration, it would be heavily in favor of the FW side for most flights.

If you look at the available airmen ratings, you’ll see that there is Powered Lift. I believe there is a Instrument PL rating as well. If anyone knows of any civilian opportunities for a rotor+fixed wing pilot to get such rating, please let me know.

Either get enough Pepsi points for the Harrier or wait for the AW609 to get to market.

Neither. Its Powered Lift category aircraft.
