What clothing brands are properly exclusive and posh?

So I walk around flannels and I see Moncler, Canada Goose and others. I go outside and see people wearing these who do not look classy. Happy for them but I wouldn’t want to emulate or choose a brash style. What clothing brands or producers, even artisans if you will are for those in the know? What is posh, well made, discrete and quiet flex? Thank you ☺️

The quiet luxury angle is real. Brands like Sunspel, Cordings, or Johnstons of Elgin sit in that space where the quality is obvious to people who know, but there's no logo shouting about it. Worth also looking at Atorie, which connects consumers directly to the ateliers that manufacture for high-end houses. Same materials, no markup, no branding noise.

Loro Piana. We're talking T-shirts for over £1500 mind. But for those "in the know" it would meet your criteria of posh, well made, discrete and a quiet flex.

Hermes is very exclusive, especially their bags and Birkins. They have a system where you have to have a purchase history and only then will they “offer” to sell you a bag. You cannot request to buy a Birkin.

This is true and yet every celebrity and influencer has a collection now - so they don’t feel all that exclusive and certainly not “posh”

True, they’re definitely exclusive but not necessarily posh, a lot of people cheat the system by buying second hand Birkins. However I think they’re so expensive, combined with the purchase history system that they are considered exclusive in my eyes

As a peasant I’m sure they’re still very exclusive (I’ve never enquired, I’d just get laughed at) it’s probably just because they’re in every influencers pictures on instagram that they just feel extremely common now

That's the problem with influencer cullture - brands use them for publicity, but end up devaluing themselves because influencers really are ten a penny. I don't know that there are any clothing brands who have abstained from the influencer nonsense. I think the most exclusive ones now are likely to be tailors who make incredibly understated suits.

Clothing worn by the royals are still pretty exclusive. Every now and then you’ll get an article about something one of them wears but they’re certainly not promoting anything like celebrities or influencers do. Man, if I were rich I’d have all of my clothes specifically designed and tailored for me. Rich people are missing a trick with that one

Discretion is big for these folk with the best possible workmanship and materials, you’re looking at: Loro Piana, Brunello Cucinelli, Brioni, Budd Shirtmakers, New and Lingwood (pyjamas), Herno, Purple Label, Kiton, Cesare Attolini, the list is endless but all without logo. For mid-range clothing: Drake’s London, RRL, Anderson & Sheppard, Barbour, APC, Hackett, Massimo Alba.

It's usually brands that don't have their branding splashed all over each garment. Proper posh people aren't walking billboards, their clothes are well made and elegant and "quiet".

As OddBall\_bfi, go to a tailors. You will get clothes that aren't blatently branded all over but which will make you look and feel really good because they fit you.

I second the commenter who suggested looking at Savile Row etc. Stores there will also have regional outlets, eg Gieves and Hawkes (no.1 Savile Row) have stores in Bath, Birmingham, Chester, Leeds and Winchester. You'll get bespoke tailoring, made to measure and (very expensive) "off the peg" clothing in those stores. They don't have their name branded all over the place though, just a little label inside.

I live in rural Cumbria. It's absolutely stuffed with genuinely posh people. A lot of them dress in 30 year old Barbours, tweed caps and what looks like very well worn House Of Bruar and Cordings stuff. They also drive battered old Volvos, Land Rovers and Skoda Yetis.

I know plenty of posh people, as like you I live ina similar type of area. Unless they're going to an event somewhere, they are wearing pretty much whatever their dog was using for a bed the night before, which as you said is usually the Barbour.

Go on Google maps and look at Saville Row, New Bond Street, Jermyn Street, Chiltern Street and Marylebone High Street. On those streets and the ones immediately around them you'll find a high concentration of the UKs more exclusive clothing shops.

No worries. If your taste/interest inclines towards classic clothing/tailoring the Permanent Style blog is worth a look. If you prefer designer/avant guarde stuff Dover Street Market is one place to start, but I don't know as much about that world.

For menswear, Turnbull & Asser, or similar Jermyn street tailors. You’re looking at £300+ for a shirt, and over £1000 for an off the rack suit though.

The brand doesn’t matter as much as the fit. A charity shop suit can look better than a fancy brand if you get it tailored to fit you properly. A lot of brands also have a wide range of quality / price point. Look at Vivienne Westwood. Everything from affordable to high fashion. The cheaper stuff usually has way more branding / obvious branding.

Bespoke tailoring is what people with 'proper' money wear, clothes literally made specifically for them. Moncler, Canada Goose, Balenciaga and the like are psuedo-high-end brands that are usually worn by people prepared to get eyeball deep in debt to buy them; to make people think they're much better off than they are. Very expensive cheap tat.

My husband shops some real bougie brands. We both have Black horse lane jeans (free repairs for life). He buys a lot of UK made, small batch, all natural fibre type shit. He's buying for life, not for looks. I buy natural fibre only, as much as possible. Nothing says gross to me like the sound of polyester.
