They’re cheap for a reason. The depreciation is brutal because reviewers are pretty lukewarm on them. The 2022 scores a [6.1/10 on AutosArena](https://autos-arena.com/car/polestar-2-2022) and the [2023 drops to a 4.7](https://autos-arena.com/car/polestar-2-2023). Common gripes are the cramped back seat, slow DC charging compared to competitors, and an infotainment system that can be flaky. The interior also feels cheaper than the price tag suggests. The real issue is what else you can get for that money. A used [2023 Model 3](https://autos-arena.com/car/tesla-model-3-2023) is around $26k with a 7.4/10 score, 87% reviewer consensus, and you get the Supercharger network which is still the best charging experience out there. Even a [2022 Model 3](https://autos-arena.com/car/tesla-model-3-2022) at similar money scores a 7.1. Build quality complaints exist with Tesla too, but the software, charging infrastructure, and resale are all stronger. The Model 3 also costs about $0.36/mile to own vs $0.54 for the Polestar. Beyond Tesla, a [2023 Ioniq 6](https://autos-arena.com/car/hyundai-ioniq-6-2023) sits around $25k with the highest score of the bunch (7.8/10), 800V fast charging, and the best efficiency at 140 MPGe. [2022 Kia EV6s](https://autos-arena.com/car/kia-ev6-2022) are in the low 20s with a 7.5. [2022 Ioniq 5s](https://autos-arena.com/car/hyundai-ioniq-5-2022) around $21k. All three charge faster and have more usable cabins. The Polestar looks cool and the power is fun on paper, but the used EV market is flooded right now and better reviewed cars are going for the same money or less.

I had a base P2 rental with cloth and manual seats… I also wasn’t a fan of the area surrounding the infotainment and cupholders being plastic, considering most cars in that class have leather there as well as the switchgear. I’m sure the higher trims are much nicer as you noted

I rented one for two weeks that had 75k miles and the interior looked like new. I could not believe it. No squeaks, rattles, just super solid car. On the other hand I rented several Teslas on business trips and they all were falling apart with half that mileage. I would not mind owning one.

I'm 6'2" and I literally could not fit in the back seat of an Uber Polestar 2. Had to sit in the front with the driver, it was definitely more spacious up front but a grown adult would not be able to sit behind me. Front seats were quite comfortable though, and I could honestly see myself using one as a commuter car.

Yeah I've been giving thought to the idea of owning an EV. As a Volvo owner, you'd think a Polestar would seem like a natural choice. But it honestly feels more cramped than my old Lexus IS 250 (which was smaller). My Kia Soul, the current "I don't give a fuck about this car" commuter car, manages to have much better headroom, leg room and just overall feels like a more spacious interior despite being physically smaller on the outside. Seats aren't as good, but my commute is only about 40 minutes so it's not a big deal. I just don't get how the packaging on the Polestar is so inefficient.

I cross shopped one a couple years ago. Went in thinking it would be the one based on internet research and found it to be really underwhelming and lacking. A moderately equipped Mach-E is way better, believe it or not, except for maybe build quality - the Mach-E-E I demoed had a busted ass sunglasses holder which was not a good sign. I ended up going with a top trim Hyundai Ioniq 6 which I felt was strangely more “luxurious” than the Polestar 2 and much better value.

MSRP was around $45-50K. 50% depreciation for a new brand's second model known for software issues isn't particularly bad. You can find used BMW 330i around the same age and mileage for the same price. Heavy depreciation just comes with the territory of premium European sedans.

Up until last year my nearest Polestar service point was just under 600 miles away. Now it's \~250 miles away. It's never been an issue for me. 4 years, 80K miles and service on my car amounts to new wiper blades and a cabin air filter every 20K miles or so. I can do that myself and have... resetting the service reminder is easy. I have had only one instance of having to return the car to the dealer and that was for a failed headlight. They flat-bedded it at Polestar's cost, replaced the module under warranty and returned it to me within a week. The only negative of the entire experience was the rental car but that was Enterprise's fault rather than Polestar's because Enterprise are a piece of shit company with shit cars. I did flush and fill the coolant once because I had a warning about low coolant levels when in a hard right turn specifically. Figured it was a bubble in the system and I figured it couldn't hurt. Took me about two hours in my garage. The cost to run this car for the last 4 years has been tiny. I spend probably $50-$60 a month to charge it at home and rarely need to DCFC.

I've got one that I've put 60k miles on in the last \~3 years and I love it. I think some of the comments here are genuinely insane, especially in regards to build quality and materials. It's put together fantastically, all the touch points feel really great, and the interior holds up well under lots of use. I haven't really had any issues with it in the time I've had it. It's only ever needed a single set of tires (don't believe the hype about EVs eating tires!), some windshield wipers, and cabin air filters. No noticeable degradation in battery life either, and I don't baby the battery. I do charge it to 100% at least once a week. The driving experience is awesome. It's a really fun car. I've got the performance model, so it's got the upgraded suspension and all that. I've never driven the "normal" version, so I can't speak to how those feel. Otherwise, it's pretty quick and with the batteries in the floor, you can throw it around corners and have a good time. That's standard EV stuff though. The only real catch on these cars is that the range kind of sucks, especially in winter. This winter was so brutal, I was barely cracking 150 miles off a full charge. In summer usually I can get like \~200ish real world miles at 80 mph on the highway. The charging speed is not wonderful, but not horrible. If you get a 2024 or 2025 those charge up to 205kw which is a big improvement over the 155kw that mine will top out at. If you can charge it at home or at work, you'd have a good time with this car.

If you're charging it at home, you don't think about it typically. I plug mine in when I get home and just go do whatever. And I'm not running it down to 20% every day; typically after my daily commute and running around my SoC is anywhere from 60-70% typically and I charge to 90% (Polestar recommended). However, just going with your specific question the math is pretty easy. Usable battery pack on the Polestar 2 is about 75kwh, so the spread you're talking about it 60% of that number. That's a nice round 45kwh of juice you're putting in. L2 charging is 11kw, so right there you're at just over four hours to fill it up. There are losses so you're probably more like 4.5 hours, but that's a close enough estimate. Real world I don't think about it at all. I plug it in when I get home, I unplug it when I leave. If my SoC isn't at 90% when I leave for whatever reason I don't really worry about it. If I need more charge for whatever reason due to poor planning or a non-typical schedule, I swing by a supercharger and add a few kwh to my "tank". This happens maybe once every six months or so.

My prior three cars were (in order); a 2008 M3 Sedan 6MT, 2016 Cadillac ATS-V 6MT and a 2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. Yes, the Polestar 2 is a very fun car to drive. Not as hard an edge as the Alfa nor as nimble as the ATS-V but a better daily driver than all of them except the ATS-V. It's sufficiently powerful, decent handling, good steering (for an EV) and has a predictable chassis with fantastic weight distribution. Will understeer at the very edge, but it's predictable and easily managed. Carries more stuff than any of the above, costs me 1/4 in fuel what any of the others cost me, and currently at 80K miles and maintenance so far has amounted to wiper blades and cabin air filters every 20K miles. I've been through far fewer tires with the Polestar than I went through with the Alfa in particular.

I agree it’s a freaking hoot to drive. On rails, tons of power, direct steering, ohlins dampers. There’s a reason they made race versions. Balanced weight, good power balance, great brakes. Have driven Taycan, etron, polestar 2, i3, mode 3, Rivian R1S tri (rode in a Rivian quad, model 3 performance, Kia ev6, leaf) and I’d say it drives/handles only second to the Taycan.

It is absolutely an insane deal. I've owned 7 EV's, including a Polestar 2 AWD, a Model Y AWD, an Ioniq 5 AWD, a Geneses GV60 AWD, am ID4 AWD, a Chevy Equinox AWD, and a Chevy Bolt. and my Polestar was BY FAAAR my favorite out of those cars. I really miss mine. Unfortunately I live 600kms from the nearest service centre now so I no longer own it, however I am considering buying one used out of warranty cause I can just take it to an independent EV mechanic rather than rely on service centre 600kms away. Don't listen to these arm chair critics. It is vastly superior to a Tesla in build quality and driver satisfaction(ergonomics are amazing and android automotive operating system is my favorite os) It is very quick, but if you want to make it even quicker(sub 4 second) you can get a software upgrade that unlocks extra power. Even my wife who isn't a car person was blown away with the Polestar. She spent a lot of time in the tesla, the hyundai and the genesis and raved about the genesis(it was a VERY nice car) and I told her try the polestar it drives nicer than even the genesis. She was skeptical but agreed after a short time driving. As for problems, they really didn't have a lot of big problems, I'd say the TCAM (telematics antenna) was their biggest issue which I think has been resolved for a long time now. My personal car, I had absolutely ZERO issues with other than at the very beginning I was having some troubles charging on certain DCFC networks. That was fixed after a software update. Check out Kris Riffa on youtube. He has done a recent update video on the Polestar 2 and still considers it one of the best driving EV's out there in its class and price. He even pointed out in one video how Polestar/Volvo have the best wiper stalk in the industry. This may sound trivial but if you are an actually driving enthusiast, this stuff is important. I would also recommend a 24 or newer because they improved range and efficiency.

It's like the early days of smart phones, back 12-15 years ago each new phone was majorly improved, had cool new features, new cpu with twice the power, longer battery life and people lined up at the door the day it was released. Now no one cares, people are happy with a 5 year old phone and it's still more than adequate for todays apps. When solid state batteries (or whatever is next) comes out in large numbers that will be the next big thing for EVs. 600-700 mile range, charging time cut in half, great performance in cold weather conditions. That will get many EV owners to upgrade and sell off their current cars, likely causing fast drop in value of older models.

Used EVs in the US is a buyers’ market. This applies across the board but [hits even harder for Polestar 2](https://www.reddit.com/r/Polestar/comments/1pnbzmr/comment/nu6jy7q/?context=3&utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) because: A) it’s a very niche brand that isn’t gaining traction AND B) it’s a fastback design in a country addicted to crossovers and SUVs. For better or worse, P2 remains an IYKYK car. Add all this up and amazing deals for used P2s with low miles in good condition are the norm. I loved my two year lease with a MY24 Polestar 2 and would have done a longer lease term in hindsight.

You are not missing anything. I bought a used Polestar 2 and it was a great deal. The one thing I don't like about the car is that software updates last year made the computer slower and more glitchy than before. It doesn't have enough processing power and memory for the software it's running.

When you live with it day to day and it isn't something you cant fix it becomes challenging. Mostly the reason I returned my 23. I would highly recommend a 24+ for the increased ram that supposedly fixed most of the slow computer issues, and gets a rwd bias which is a huge plus to me.

I was seriously looking at a Polestar 2, and then I got to drive one when my sister came to visit and got one as a rental. It was a bit like being attracted to someone at a nightclub and then getting a good look at them when the lights come on a closing time. The interior was slightly claustrophobic and the center console? I just couldn't. My little BMW 2 Series seemed spacious by comparison. I really wanted to like the Polestar 2. After driving it? Not so much.

Battery cell manufacturers rate their batteries for a certain number of full cycles where the capacity retained is above a certain %SOC. It is not standardized across brands though. You can see how EVE tests and rates its LFP prismatic cells. EV packs are composed of many cells like this - most vehicles do not have prismatics and a lot of cars have different chemistries which affect the rated number of cycles. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0721/2761/1190/files/eve_LF280K.pdf?v=1713986020 Biggest factors affecting battery longevity are the sizes of the pack top and bottom buffer, the length of time spent sitting at 100% SOC, the typical depth of discharge, how long a pack sits near empty, and elevated temperatures during charge cycles. This is why most vehicles manufacturers will recommend some variation on the following rules: 1) don’t leave your vehicle sitting with a full charge or completely empty for long periods of time. The buffers help mitigate the issues but still try to keep away from the extreme ends of the pack on a regular basis. 2) avoid deep discharges, sticking to smaller charging intervals. For example, plug in every night for a smaller charge, rather than doing once a week, or whatever 3) try to operate in the middle of your pack as often as you are able. Vehicle batteries are all actively cooled and have very intelligent charging controls now. The Leaf was the worst offender which gave EV batteries a bad reputation as it was air cooled and would get really quite hot during DC fast charge sessions. Modern batteries do not have this constraint or issue. The usual issues popping up these days for batteries are the same issues plaguing all electronics. Small components die, or software goes sideways and screws up a connection somewhere. Now you have to take the vehicle to a dealer to get the issue diagnosed because it is not a simple fix to replace portions of a complex battery pack.

I had a Polestar 2 before I was rear ended. It was a great car and I miss it. However, the one pain point I would bring up if you are considering buying a used one is having a service center near you. I was fortunate enough to have one near me, and I was trying to make an appointment once and the closest date was like 2 months out. It was just for a fog light that went out, so nothing serious. But I imagine if you had a major issue it's going to be a nightmare.

Its an insane value. I almost got one because I woulda made up cost of the car with the difference in gas savings (even after electricity costs) in 5 years due to how depreciated they are. Woulda basically had a free car since I tend to keep my cars 5+ years. Eventually, I got an i4 for a little more due to liking the way it drove and the interior more, though the Polestar 2 I was looking at woulda been faster. Its a decent EV, interior is minimal but it drives well and is built pretty solid. I'd say go for it if it fits what you look for in a vehicle

IMO they are a steal. My brother leased one back in 2023, still has it not but he plans on giving it back. It’s a small sedan but if you don’t need a lot of space it’s a great EV. Especially the dual motor awd models, my brother has a single motor. The lease is expiring soon and to buy it out would be the same price as getting a used dual motor PS2. It’s a stylish EV, better build quality compared to Tesla by a mile. If there’s no service centers near you, you’ll have to take a road trip whenever it needs to be serviced Biggest issue I’ve seen my brother have is sometimes the infotainment screen freezes and you have to reboot the screen.
