Why are good delis weirdly hard to find in Dallas?
Posted by DFWUnhinged@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 252 comments
maybe I’m just tired and missing something obvious, but why does a city this big have so few truly great delis?
I know the usual ones. Trade’s Delicatessen in Bishop Arts is incredible. Probably the best pastrami sandwich in town. Jimmy’s Food Store is also fantastic, especially for Italian sandwiches. Both of those are legit.
I’ve had Cindi’s New York Deli, which can be pretty good depending on the day. Jason’s Deli I’ve always liked for what it is. I tried snarfs Sandwiches recently and didn’t really love it. And obviously you’ve got chains like Jimmy John’s and Jersey Mike’s, but that’s not really what I mean.
What confuses me is that Dallas is a huge city, and yet it feels like there aren’t that many great classic deli spots. In places like New York or even Los Angeles you can just stumble into amazing sandwich shops all over the place.
Delis feel like a basic big-city food category.
Am I missing a bunch of places? Where are the real sandwich spots in Dallas? I’m honestly just trying to find more good sandwiches.
Jefftaint@reddit
Not enough Italians or Jews.
Serious_Excuse9714@reddit
Italians
robbzilla@reddit
As a person of Italian descent, it's also hard to find good Italian restaurants in general. Most are just Albanians calling their stuff Italian and buying their sauce from a distributor. (There are a few Albanian places that are pretty good, and make their own sauce, but it doesn't compare to my now-deceased grandma's. She was raised in Italy)
Grouchy-Beginning993@reddit
In your opinion, what are the best legit Italian spots in Dallas? We love Italian food in our house and I’d love to know what your suggestions are.

I can't really speak for the expensive spots. I don't usually do fine dining.
So, In actual Dallas County, I like Salerno's in Highland Village. Note: I no longer work or live near Dallas, so a couple of the places have either fallen off, or no longer exist. I used to like Two Guys, but the last time I went, it had really gone downhill. This also means that I haven't been to Salerno's in about 3-4 years.
I also like Moni's in Arlington, which is a Albanian owned joint. The people running it are great, though, and they make a their own sauces. It makes a difference.
Also, Savianno's in Euless is pretty good. My FBI (Full Blooded Italian) dad loved going there.
Again, I don't aim for top of the price point. These are daily drivers, so to speak. I don't know where I'd take my wife for an anniversary dinner if she wanted Italian Food. Maybe Nonna Tatti in Ft Worth if I could be assured she could eat it (Allergy issues). I've never been, but I've heard great things about it. So I don't personally recommend it at this time.
I usually just cook it myself, but damn, who wants to sit around all day and make bracciole? (My fave dish, by the way, I'm just being lazy here, heh)
Grouchy-Beginning993@reddit
My husband LOVES to cook. So I’ll also take recipes 😄 we like to go to Roman Cucina in north Dallas but I have no idea if it’s authentic. Thangs for your suggestions!
robbzilla@reddit
The most important part is that you like it. I've seen Japanese sushi chefs comment on how delicious American sushi is. They'll then say "But it's not sushi!" :D
I feel the same way. I grew up with a style that was fed to me pretty often, so I'm set in my ways a bit. But if you like it, then what's the problem?
Sea-Cauliflower-8368@reddit
No legit Italian bakeries either.
xoxo_angelica@reddit
It’s far from inaccurate to also contribute this to a lack of Jews…in the big cities of NY, NJ, MA, even MD, there are both Italian and Jewish kosher delis on like every block. As a Texan Jew I’m at least somewhat satisfied with the random recent increase of bagels in DFW but the lack of proper delis is such ass
Want2BnOre@reddit
What is your favorite of the local delis. (And bagel place since you mentioned)
NYerInTex@reddit
Jew here, if not the one to whom you are replying.
For a Jewish style deli there’s sadly only one, Deli News - but it’s super solid (also has surprisingly good bagels that they fly in from NY).
For bagels there are a few places - Shugs bagels themselves are ok (too fluffy not enough chew not enough flavor) but they have the best BEC (bacon egg cheese) and other breakfast sandwiches around, great chicken cutlet, and the only fresh Kaiser rolls I know of around here.
Lubbies is really good, and while I’ve not had it Scalfani’s is supposed to be good.
But the best and it’s by a good measure? STARSHIP BAGELS.
As a NYer Starship is better than most places back east , be it NYC or Long Island. It’s not just a great DFW bagel, it’s a legit great bagel PERIOD. They have the snappy exterior, soft but firm and chewy interior, that little sour bite - it’s an amazing bagel.
My rankings:
Starship Bagel
Lubbies
3 Deli News
Sea-Cauliflower-8368@reddit
I'll ditto Starship Bagels. Deli News has gone down hill. Quality and taste are not good. I'm so disappointed.
diptripflip@reddit
Thank you, Jewish friends! 🥯
Corn_muffin214@reddit
Im from NJ and live in DFW. This is a bad take. Starship is a glorified, dense roll. Shame
NYerInTex@reddit
Lol. Maybe you are a Joisey faux bagel fanatic. You like them fluffy like muffins do ya?
Perhaps your blood is more Dallasite than NY… I’m sorry.. JERSEY.
Corn_muffin214@reddit
Sure bud.
yusuksong@reddit
I tried the breakfast bagel sandwiches at shugs and they were just fine? Nothing to write home about
NYerInTex@reddit
Im my experience they are the closest thing to an east coast deli breakfast sandwich. Not cheap though. And, again, the only place I know with Kaiser rolls
WhirledNews@reddit
Have you tried Sclafanis? Curious to know how they stack up from a NYer.
NYerInTex@reddit
I’ve not so I’ve not put them on the list. I’ve heard they are good
Binge_Gaming@reddit
Saved by the Bagel is very good - fresh fluffy bagels every day. Good types of cream cheese.
NYerInTex@reddit
I’ll give them a try - but a traditional / authentic NY bagel is not fluffy. It has bite on the outside and a fairly dense chew on the interior
xoxo_angelica@reddit
Fluffy is a total deterrent for sure. That was the problem I continuously ran into for years in Dallas (I’m from here) until more places opened up. Starship and Lubbies are top notch and authentic IMO
Ichgebibble@reddit
What? No Cindy’s?
NYerInTex@reddit
No. Cindy’s is a faux NY deli.
Great breakfast especially their Tex Mex stuff - the rest is the wrong side of Meh.
viagra___girls@reddit
I want to like lubbies so bad. I’ve been three times, it’s so cute and everyone is so nice. but each time I’ve gone my bagel was not great. the texture is off. just my 2 cents.
DragonChowhound@reddit
NYC native here, 20 years in DFW. Starship is legit the best bagel in the USA.
Want2BnOre@reddit
Th you
DrPepper77@reddit
I think starship actually won first place at some big bagel competition in the north east recently, beating out all the ny contestants
NYerInTex@reddit
They indeed did - they were runner up a couple years back. If I weren’t trying to limit carbs I’d literally have two bagels a week. Their downtown location is a perfect 10-12 min walk from my place
Specific-Stop-4591@reddit
Shout out to starship bagels. Orens a great dude and he makes even better bagels.

This guy doesn’t Preston Hollow. 47 synagogues. 80K Jewish folk in DFW
I_SmellFuckeryAfoot@reddit
lol and they probably go to michocana too
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
I’m spitballing here but I think it’d also have to do with when they moved here. I’m guessing NYC had a lot of first generation Jewish immigrants. The classic American immigrant story is you get here and just do something with a low barrier to entry that you’re familiar with from back home. Restaurants, delis, etc fit that bill pretty well. So that established a footprint and endured as the population grew. The first gen immigrants wanted a taste of the old country, their kids wanted a taste of their culture, and everyone else said “damn, this pastrami stuff is good.”
I’d reckon in Dallas a lot of the early Jewish population would have been second generation or later. More likely to work in some other field, less likely to come here and open a restaurant.
JusticeRhino@reddit
The heartbreaker for me is that there have been some really top tier delis like Gilbert’s that didn’t make it. Hell, there were Carnegie Deli locations here once upon a time.
DFWTooThrowed@reddit
In the 70’s people called Hillcrest ‘Hebrew High’ - though probably not in a nice way but you get the idea.
texan01@reddit
I went to J. J. Pearce HS and on Jewish holidays, the school was weirdly empty, some of my classes I was the only Gentile, so I might have been the only kid in the classroom for that period.
PotatoProlapse@reddit

chayatoure@reddit
So not very many Jews in DFW…
JusticeRhino@reddit
If 1% isn’t “very many”, sure.
chayatoure@reddit
Not compared to metros with large Jewish populations.
Jefftaint@reddit
Correct. NYC metro is like 11%+. Miami, Philadelphia, Boston, San Fran, LA, DC, Baltimore, Chicago and San Diego are all over 3%. Even Atlanta has a a higher %.

Deli news
Sea-Cauliflower-8368@reddit
It doesn't even come close to a true NYC deli. It was good awhile back but something has changed.
3Time4Eater3@reddit
Deli News and Cyndis is what I've always known for the full deli experience. And Mr.G's when it existed
vivalakellye@reddit
Wait, Mr. G’s was also a deli?! I only knew it as the store my dad bought his beer/wine from.
3Time4Eater3@reddit
Indeed. There was a separate door for it on the side, but not separate at all from the store. It was in the back with a few tables.
kozzy1ted2@reddit
Oh damn, Mr G’s was fantastic.
PreferenceBusiness2@reddit
Man, I really want to like that place but the price seems pretty expensive for sandwich. Every time I look at the menu, I just think that the cost is too expensive to justify.
Alivaronas@reddit
lol I’ve paid $30 for a pastrami sandwich at Katz’s in NYC.
MetalAngelo7@reddit
lmao you went to the tourist trap for a mid sandwich
ClippyWouldntDoThat@reddit
Afaik this is true
Alivaronas@reddit
It’s not, but no matter what restaurant you say you like on Reddit someone will crawl out of the woodwork to insult you for liking it.
Kanarakettii@reddit
And? That's also a crazy price. $30 for a sandwich. Wack.
Alivaronas@reddit
I mean it’s 12oz of pastrami on the sandwich. Pastrami is brisket that’s cured for like a month. Per pound it’s not that far off from what Texas bbq places are charging for brisket.
It’s a bit high but shit is delicious, and it was enough to share between two people.
Launchpad903@reddit
most places are around 35-36 a lb for brisket I think so getting 3/4 lb of pastrami for 30 isnt really bad at all considering
14Rage@reddit
$41/lb for brisket now. Prices have gone up again :(
Launchpad903@reddit
Damn! I agree on smoking yourself I mostly do chicken hard to allocate a whole weekened to cook a proper brisket
14Rage@reddit
If you imagine your finished brisket is $41/lb (+tax) your weekend smoke can be worth $1000 if you smoke 2.
Goetia-@reddit
How much does a reasonably sized sandwich cost? That's an indulgence.
Kanarakettii@reddit
That's a shit ton of pastrami for one sandwich, lmao, maybe I underestimated how large this thing was.
Opus_777@reddit
That's also a world famous sandwich shop in probably our most famous city in the US lol everything is expensive there
PreferenceBusiness2@reddit
You know what, maybe I am just off-base in price comparison. I'm looking at their menu now and a reuben is 18.99, which seems high but frankly, I am comparing this to my sandwiches in the northeast from like 15 years ago.
jfb1027@reddit
It is expensive but a ton of meat. If that’s not your thing, might not be it though.
PreferenceBusiness2@reddit
I think this is it - maybe I'm expecting something different so that's not fair.
jfb1027@reddit
Ya I started trying to make some of these sandwiches my self and if you add it up you really aren’t saving a massive amount of money making one yourself. Deli News gives a side also. But agree it’s hard to spend that kind of money on sandwich.

A lot of stuff that people have in shops in other places (without as much urban sprawl), is taken care of by grocery store and other restaurants. ? Market street & central Market are probably the best ones I've tried. The good taco spots have tortas, the best ones have ruebens too. Cajun & seafood resaturants will have Po'boys. There’s no good Italian food in any part of Texas NOWHERE! I won’t even go to Italian restaurants because I know I can make it better myself. It’s not just Dallas and deli’s. Because most of us Texans have never experienced a truly good deli. We grew up with grocery store Delia rathe than having the Northwest style of establishment that truly deserves the name 'delicatessen'. Basically most of this market doesn't know so doesn't demand it and doesn't patronize them when they try to break into the market. There have been some that were highly regarded but didn't have enough foot traffic to stay open.

Years ago there was Phil's Delicatessen on Oak Lawn. Definitely miss the place. That's where celebrities would eat. My best friend was a waitress there and she waited on *old person alert Paul Lynd.

Trades Deli Reuben

Texas traded deli's for BBQs. It's just how Texas prepares meat and even in earlier times the whole point was to preserve the meat. Europeans on the east coast held tightly to tradition while the Germans in Texas were already familiar with smoking and quickly adapted. I've based my entire food truck concept on a Texan take on a delicatessen.
tmc00138@reddit
I'd be so down for that. Where do you set up?
somethink@reddit
I'm in Denton parked outside of Rubber Gloves. It's called Render Texas Delicatessen

I really miss GOOD breakfast croissant sandwiches. Kolache places have ok ones but in my pregnancy craving desperation the last one I got was QuikTrip. Please does anyone have good recos?
LordMcDoogleberg@reddit
Sad to say but the best sandwiches I’ve ever had are the ones I make at Eatzis. Their spreads and toppings are slightly more diverse than most places. It’s no Jewish deli from LA/NY though.

We used to have Great American Hero on Lemmon but the owner retired and decided he didn’t want to sell so he closed it
Dino’s in Arlington I consider a good one though it’s a drive away
notamyokay@reddit
Didn't it sell and move to NWHwy and then closed?
LankyYogurtcloset0@reddit
And where the Great American Hero was located is now Shugs. Not a deli but pretty good bagels.

I've been trying since the early 90s to find one that's anything like Bagelstein's was in the 70s and 80s.
xanoran84@reddit
If you want good sandwiches, they aren't quite the same as what you're used to, but check out some banh mi places! There's a bunch around, and they're for the most part all quite good
thefinalgoat@reddit
I mean, we got Bánh Mì shops?
Bubbleguts420@reddit
There are none. We are a sandwich desert.

Not Dallas proper but there’s a great deli downtown Garland.

Back in the day Jack in The Box used to have Deli Trio, made with Genoa salami, sliced ham, roasted turkey, provolone, pickles and a creamy Italian sauce. It was super good
