99% of people talking shit about FSB builds have a literal garbage tier friction fit handguard that would not survive one single drop
If you are trying to do a budget build imo nothing will be cheaper and more reliable than an iron sight AR. It cuts out a few of the most common problems on home built ARs by having that gas block pinned in place
Plus when a foreign country (or most likely Elite pedos from America) eventually turn off the power - FSB ganggg will be back on top baby

There are official reports dating back years claiming China may have malware in our grid capable of turning it off. If it was to happen at minimum I believe official (gov) number are that it would take 18 months to recover the grid.
People who say they cannot do it don’t see what the U.S. did in Venezuela- because we literally di exactly that. Used Malware to turn off their grid.
It’s easy to look into and not some wild prepper theory - if conflict between the U.S. and China or Russia breaks out the first thing we will do and they will do is shut down each others grids.

If the grid goes down you have a flimsy piece of aluminum holding in your back up iron sights
You drop your rifle one time and your mount or LPVO can break. Anyone that completely relies on their optics has never gone and done anything rigorous with their rifles.
In my environment in northern WI - that LPVO would most likely not survive a winter with no heat
So now no matter how long my optic lasts I have a pinned on sight.
Completely depends what you set your rifles up for. I have short free float guns for up close or normal use. But I have a few FSB guns setup to be bomb proof and parts compatible for long term situations. For me it could be as simple as I have a massive tornado that takes out the local grid and need a week or two without power (has happened before here)
Some people don’t think the same way - but I like having rifles that I can zero - throw in the closet for 5 years and know they will still run even if I absolutely abuse them.
I have seen ATACRs break before, ACOGs stop holding zero, and screws shear off of T2 mounts from drops - I do not personally trust free float rails for my environment or use cases personally. I don’t see any benefit from them because I’m not running lasers or thermals on the handguard

Also to add to that. If I bring my rifle out in the snow/rain for two days - all I have to do is move my delta ring and I can oil and clean my barrel. If you do that with your free float guns you have to remove the rail and re zero the sight every time you want to clean the surface rust off of your barrel/oil it

I probably haven't cleaned my rifle besides adding some oil to the BCG in 2000 rounds, and I'll do another 2000 before I think about cleaning and oiling it. Not an issue - at least in the west where I live. My rifle doesn't get wet except for snow. I take it you must live somewhere wetter.
IDK. My rifle is handy for pests and sees a lot of time outside on my rural property. I also shoot maybe 25 competition stages a year with it, plus hunting, training, recreational shooting... Unless your years are longer than mine, I don't think your rifle is outside 20x as much.
I've had optics out in -30 F snow and 120 F heat. Hunting, backpacking, banged around on a SxS and I've never had an issue with any of the optics I've had over the years. Maybe I'm just less clumsy?

I've met a LOT of people who come to competitions for the first time (usually older fellows) with iron sights claiming they can nail anything out to 500 yards. Maybe they could when they were 20 and their eyes were fresher. They ALWAYS fail to get hits past 100. Put a spinner at 100 yards with the sun at the wrong angle? The RSO is going to have to ask them to move to the next target so they can finish the stage.

Yes I take my ARs out that far because it’s fun. But any serious rifle like that will never be used with a magnified optic. If I need a magnified optic to shoot back I’m just running the opposite direction and disengaging

Don’t buy into the free float rail hype. I have swapped builds from non free float to free float. You literally see almost no gains in accuracy unless you are loading your rifle up on a bipod.
The handguards are very expensive to get one that will actually hold zero and survive a drop - plus they add a ton of weight
Obviously if you are mounting a laser or a Thermal you need one - but besides that I think they are a downgrade in durability, weight, cost and reliability(removes a permanent sight pinned to the barrel)
With a FSB AR you zero that motherfucker and you can not touch it for 30 years and it will be ready to rock when you need it

This barrel uses a ROUND handguard end cap so you will need to find a two piece compatible with that
Most midlength/Rifle length FSB barrels come with a TRIANGLE handguard cap

this really depends on what your handguard ideas are for your midlength build. if you only want basic bitch round ones or drop in non-free floats, yes this is not the barrel to buy and you can go 16'' carbine. if you are going to put any drop in milspec free floats or the other slim polymer handguards, this barrel can do that for you.

I want to do a quad rail behind the fsb for an m4 look. How do I know what mounting (round or triangle) the quad rails require? I know I’d need ~9” vs 7” for mid length. almost all non-FF drop ins will be triangle caps, similar to this handguard
this only applies if you want to continue using the delta ring assembly. if you want to just utilize the milspec barrel nut, any free float utilizing the milspec barrel nut will work. centurion, midwest industries, etc all make flavors and the endcap wont matter.
if you want both the delta ring and free float and have some $$, i believe the only two options are the DD omega 9.0 and the vltor CASV midlength and again, the endcap wont matter. if you'd like to see how both look side by side, this is my DD omega 7.0 carbine next to my DD omega 9.0 midlength.

if you want to play dress up, carbine is great since it mimics the issued rifle and you can swap between round handguards, the issued KAC, extended FSP rails, and the like. if you are going to buy one only and use it, i prefer midlength. i run out of hand space very easily on carbine.

oh, i see. i disagree with the above poster on the FF rail hype, but FSBs do present their own challenges you have to work around and disadvantages when it comes to laser/light placement around the sight tower. but there are a few drop in free floats using the milspec nut that you can utilize with this barrel, including my favorite the DD omega 9.0.

All the best shooters at the competitions I go to use barrels from budget mfrs like Rosco or BA. Why spend more when all you're doing is lobbing pulled 55 gr projectiles in your cheap reloads 200 yards at a mini IPSC?
I think even an intermediate shooter can out-shoot a mid tier AR barrel. I'm definitely capable of more accuracy than my BA barrel on the rifle I compete with. It just doesn't matter.

Great input, that’s my situation. I have super nice guns with expensive barrels, but my competition only guns all have budget barrels for this exact reason.
A $99-$150 barrel gets you 70-80% of a $300 barrel. I don’t need sub MOA on a gun that gets thrown into barrels and slammed into barricades to shoot mostly between 2-200 yards, with the occasional 400-600 stages. Most of my BA barrels have been 2-3 moa with 55gr like xtac. That is plenty enough to be highly capable with.
