The Ford Transit is considered fullsize (replacing the Econoline van years ago), whereas the new ProMaster City Van is midsized. Weirdly enough, OP didn't link [the "proper" article for the new van](https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a70700161/2027-ram-promaster-city-revealed/), but rather just the overview page that all vehicles have on Car and Driver's website. In the article I linked, they talk about its size, although it doesn't have all the specific dimensions. But from what I found on [MotorTrend's website](https://www.motortrend.com/news/first-look-2027-ram-promaster-city-van), it looks to be 210" long, 75.6" wide, and 76.7" tall. It only comes in one size, as opposed to Ford's Transit can which comes in different wheelbases, length, and roof heights. But yeah, the ProMaster looks to be at least 8" shorter and 5" narrower than Ford's van.

They will still build these in Turkey and import them to the US as passenger versions with windows and seats, before taking those out again and selling them as vans. Mercedes sends cargo Sprinters to the US as CKDs, then assembles them fully at the facility in South Carolina. Passenger Sprinters are imported as full models, since the chicken tax doesn't apply to them.

The full-size Transit is made in the US, so no need to worry about the tax. Ford tried that "fake temporary seat" thing with the Transit *Connect*, but US Customs put a stop to it. When the previous PMC was brought to the US, they also took the route of sending them all as passenger vans and converting them to cargo in the US. Why Customs didn't do the same to FCA/Stellantis as they did to Ford, I'm not sure. It might be that they reused the seats and windows instead of immediately throwing them out like Ford did.

Full size cargo vans like the Transit, Sprinter, and ProMaster are far more popular. Only midsize on sale in the US were the Metris and maybe if you consider the old Grand Caravan. In my time in Chicago I can't say I've seen all that many Metris vans running around, nor the old compact TransitConnect, ProMasterCity, or NV200. Interestingly enough the full size vans often get worse gas mileage than their pickup counterparts. Though the covered cargo thing is correct.

US diesels have far higher pollutant emissions standards than the Euro ones, though Europe is closing the gap. In general: US is strict on smog, Europe is strict[er] on CO2 (and fuel prices). The end result is the emissions systems to make the diesels compliant is wildly expensive and ends up being unreliable. So the diesels have a higher upfront cost AND higher maintenance costs. They also really need to be run hot and hard to reduce unwanted maintenance and city driving doesn't give that. The end result is it's cheaper to run the gas vans outside of heavy towing operations; diesel is 25% more expensive to start with, and the gas vans have less maintenance and downtime for a business. Ford offered a 2L diesel before killing it. Now the Transits have a 3.5L or 3.5L twin-turbo gas. I think the ProMaster is a 3.6L gas. Mercedes is more committed to the diesels here, but were forced to offer a gas van for fleet operators after they complained about diesel maintenance costs and unexected downtime from repairs.

My Transit shares the engine with the F150, the 3.5L EB albiet the first gen. Even though it's a "1-ton" (cargo, SRW) with a GVWR of 10k, when it's empty it is pretty comparable to a half ton for curb weight and I'm sitting around 15mpg. It's mostly the fact that it has the aero dynamics of a small barn. It's taller, flatter in the front, and truly flat in the rear. I was primarily responding to the fact that "they are better for the environment" isn't really true. The unibody vans are also a lot less comfortable to drive than most full size pickups.

It's the same size (this appears to be based on the longest version of the platform) as the Ranger - 75.5" wide, 209" long (okay, so the Ranger is actually 1.6" longer, sue me) and 76" tall, it only adds 200 lbs of payload, and it loses out a lot on towing. Economy remains to be seen but it's pretty feasible to be in the low-mid 20s, just like the Ranger, though it could be better. This will have some market as a commercial product for medium and small city fleets, but it's not likely to be a big consumer hit because it doesn't offer a lot a Ranger wouldn't (the average consumer doesn't need 8 seats or the length of the van's load area with all seats removed - 112" by the way) and does so by charging $7k more starting. So it's not really a cheaper car, and it's not particularly more practical, unless all you do is ship 9 foot long objects in the city, than the Ranger. Even then, you're probably better off buying an F-150 with the 3.5 and a long bed, because that gets you 20% more payload, a lot more power, and the same size cargo bed but with a lot more versatility of use for about the same price.

I'm mildly surprised Stellantis is trying a small cargo van again; they did it once along with Ford, Mercedes, and Nissan/GM and none of them stuck. Not because any of them were necessarily bad, but because for their price a business could also get a used full-size van with more cargo and towing capacity while also having money left over for gas, and the bigger vans would qualify for Section 179 deduction.

I wonder who buys the passenger version of these small commercial vans? They only seat 8 people like a regular minivan but are much less luxurious, don’t have as many features, don’t have much sound insulation, and are the same or more expensive. I can see why the large 12 seat passenger vans exist, but I don’t get the appeal of the compact ones. Then again, it’s a niche market even for the panel van, which may be a smart play by Stellantis. This “new” RAM is the only compact commercial van available in the U.S. after the death of the Mercedes Metris, Ford Transit Connect, Nissan NV200, and previous gen ProMaster City.

Lots of agencies who have to shuttle people will buy them not for the creature comforts necessarily but because they are work horses. When you need to move a handful of people a short distance every day, you go with one of these. I used to drive a crew to a vocational site and the GM van we had was coming up on half a million miles and it still was rock solid. Had crank windows and it was loud as hell inside, but it’ll get you there.

Technically the VW Multivan T7 after it moved from body on frame to the MQB platform is an MPV. For some reason, even though VW has to pay like 5k emission fines for every diesel sold, they decided to heavily push the diesel in a special Bulli trim, so whilst the 2.0TDI is below 50k, the 2.0TSI is more expensive and phev is 60k+... and you still need to click about 5k of extras to make it feel like modern car. Sharan/Alhambra were selling quite well even if they were in production like 14 years or so. The smaller Touran ends production this year. Ford discontinued the S-Max and Galaxy, they also only offer a van, but this one is still a body on frame. the French also discontinued the MPVs like Espace or Scenic, they used the names on SUVs or weird crossovers. Even the popular small vans like Berlingo/RIfter/whatever were not available for few years as family cars due to emissions, only as commercial vehicles, they since returned, but as EV or with weak 3cylinders. Chinese brands are bringing some MPVs, like the Forthing Utour whatitsname and some others. I know a lot of people who moved from MPV to an SUV and will move back to MPV or a full size van as next car. There is no benefit for most families. The KIA PV5 is skyrocketing in sales. One sales guy told me he sold all of his allocations before anyone saw the car in person, they started pre-sale in November, first cars didn't hit showrooms until late January, but already in December the quota was sold. It is a multibrand dealer, including Kia and VW, and they sold more PV5s in 2 months than the VW Buzz's in 3 years. But that's still a van. I wish we would get cars like Sienna in Europe.

it's nearly the same size as LWB Multivan T7, 5cm wider without mirrors, but lower, which is quite important for private garages. I drove Volvo XC90 for a year, which is a tad smaller but not by much, definitely would want the benefit of the interior space of a car of such size rather than the space offered in the SUVs of this size. And there are many, too many of these SUVs driving around cities. And I just don't get it. You need to spend 100k to get a comfortable SUV that is still not as comfortable as 50k MPV.

The only real "MPV" left is the Dacia Jogger, and MPVs are much smaller than this so if you want a comfortable 7/8 seater this style of van is your only option, since we don't have typical consumer-focused minivans like the Odyssey or Sienna

I was considering the Jogger 2 years ago, but back then it had no "auto" option, the Hybrid was scheduled for later that year but that wasn't of interest for me, I didn't want to "test" the 4+2 transmission (it turned out to be ok). Right now I am again considering it, the latest facelift brought a 6sp dual clutch although still to the small 3cyl, but I know I'd have to have the car stripped to the bone and spend 2-3k on sound insulation and replacing the godawful carpet, have the roofliner insulated - I drove one 1000+km and my head was literally cooking, there is probably zero insulation between the roof and thin upholstery, it was 32C outside and the roof was radiating nuclear heat. Even though it's a dachshund, narrow and long B segment car, the space it provided in 3rd row is quite extraordinary. My use case would be to have one side of the 2nd row permanently removed and use it for 4-5 adults driving comfortably, but I still hesitate. I also park often in underground garages, and the DCT only comes with LPG which would mean looking for street parking in city centers. And that is also not as easy to find in old town city streets with a 2.9m wheelbase car.

To be honest I don't have experience with either, but the Espace (which to my knowledge was the last full size MPV for sale in europe before it was discontinued in 2023) is \~250mm shorter in length compared to the Odyssey and Sienna, and \~100mm narrower, so naturally it will have less space inside. I had a look on Google Images and the 3rd row definitely looks smaller on the Espace compared to the other two, and it's only available with 7 seats, not 8. In comparison, the Citroen Spacetourer and all it's rebadged siblings in LWB config are about the same dimensions as the American vans and available with 8 seats.

Nope it's not a competitor of Transit Connect but Transit Custom. You are confusing 2 different car classes. Connect and things like Berlingo/Partner or old RAM ProMaster CIty you had few years ago are panel vans/kombivans. This Stellantis van is a competitor of Transit Custom and it's a light commercial van. From technical standpoint and size 2 completely different products but probably hard to differentiate in US as you don;t get them here much

French cars besides 1.2 are quite ok. Renault offers one of the best quality to price ration in EU right now. Only 1.2 PureTech is dreadful. This is a new iteration of 1.6 Prince engine. Decent engines, this is it's 3 generation they mended most problems with them - should be ok

Pretty sure these are designed for last mile stuff like short trips and deliveries, which would clog the DPF. Diesel isn’t consistently cheaper in the US like it is in Europe, and vehicles with them typically cost more upfront and more to maintain than their gas counterparts. It does sometimes make sense on something like a Sprinter van for hauling bulky items on the highway, but these are made for city use.

Some of the large vans do (mostly Mercedes Sprinters), but emissions are tighter on diesel engines here, which makes them more maintenance-heavy, and diesel is almost always more expensive than gas--especially right now. So commercial fleets would rather use a gas engine even if it's not as efficient. The really old-school designs use large displacement iron block pushrod V8s.

i daily drive an 11 second 0-60 car and have NEVER had an issue. the only time i felt a car was too slow was when i rented a 14.4s 0-60 car after getting used to something faster and tried to pass uphill. in hindsight it just required more forward thinking and not a faster car.

How often do you actually need to go that fast in normal driving? I have a 6k lb Sprinter with a whopping 170 hp (albeit with 300 ft/lb of tq), and it’s rare I find I actually need more power. And I’m on vacation currently with a Hyundai Kona that has 147hp to move its 3k lbs, and that’s also adequate.

I don't actually have super high powered cars (aside from the Volvo), my Kia Soul probably has the same 2.0L 147hp engine that was in the Kona you rented and I find it to be adequate as well (although the curb weight is a much trimmer 1,310 kg). The Promaster is 360 kg heavier, though, with only an extra 19 horsepower. I mean it's probably fine, but the Soul is already not exactly quick. This thing is even bigger and has the ability to be loaded with more stuff.

It depends on the gearing. If it's geared low so it can get up to 30-45 MPH quickly, that'll be adequate, even if it runs out of breath at 65.

Yeah, for something that's made for people who will load it down with equipment, building materials, etc, 166hp is just not enough. Loaded up with 1500 lbs of equipment and 2 people, that 0-100km is going to be 14+ seconds.

Dude, it’s a cargo van. The Promaster City is within 15 inches of the Express. And only 3k less. Now that I think about it, I think this may easily be a flop, if only because you can get an Express for a few grand more.

People in the comments looking at exterior dimensions to compare cargo vans, absurd... What matters for cargo vans is obviously the size of the cargo area. The load floor in this is much lower down than in Chevrolet Express, so the Ram has a taller cargo area. Also the engine compartment and bumpers take up less length in the Ram. Ford should offer the Transit CUSTOM in the US, the Custom is the same size as this but even more spacious.
