The problem is most shippers don't want to deal with a small carrier. They want 100 loads covered with one email at the cheapest rate possible. A small carrier is only covering a dozen or so.
Plenty of small companies that only do 1 or 2 shipments a week. Those are the ones you market towards. When I bought my second truck I would make and take calls all day, and walk over to every loading dock I saw. If it was easy 90% of all small carriers wouldn't go under in their first 2 years.
