> In 2025, the top 10 super speeders in New York State each received an average of 179 speed camera tickets, with the most reckless driver receiving 259.
In my state, driving on a suspended is a huge ticket, then it's a huge ticket and week in jail. If you keep doing it, you can end up doing months in country. People learn real quick not to drive on suspended.
This is in nyc. Many times cops will stop pursuing these drivers due to safety. They just need to impound the car and charge a huge fee based on the tickets.
I think the problem is they shouldn't be able to drive after getting their license revoked. Not only when they inevitably do something that gets them pulled over where they hit some people or a car and have no insurance coverage, causing problems for everyone else
I mean that they shouldn't physically be able to get into a car and drive it. Idk how you'd do that without something that would have to verify your license and then verify it's you and that you're the one driving and absolutely no one would want that
Maybe not, but you could at least try. It seems like your tickets and charges are unbelievably lenient. Doing 130 in a 100 here loses you your licence, on the spot, for three months - plus an $900-1000 dollar fine. You lot would get less than a third of the fine and no actual consequences, from what I've seen.
Yeah I know I was basically getting at that. We'd have to do something insane and extremely intrusive and no one is crazy enough to want that thankfully
I ask this every time someone mentions license confiscations. That shit is not stopping someone from driving anyway. In my state, it is a potentially arrestable offense to drive while DL is invalid (they don't physically take them away anymore; just flagged on NCIC/DPS) and people still do it lol. It's "just" a Class B misdemeanor
Not when it’s from a speeding camera. They can’t prove who was driving. If they were pulled over and personally given speeding citations they would’ve lost their license a long time ago. These speeding camera fines target the vehicle not the driver because they inherently can’t prove who’s driving the car.
There are plenty of traffic laws that create consequences for the vehicle owner, regardless of whether the prosecutor proves that the owner was the driver. My solution? If a vehicle is used by *anyone* for a sufficient amount of traffic violations, or a smaller amount of serious ones, law enforcement impounds the vehicle *and it is forfeited to the state*. Voila.
You clearly have never heard of civil asset forfeiture, wherein money and materiel suspected of being involved in a crime (or ill-gotten gains from such) can be confiscated by LEO. Key here is "suspected": If you're found not guilty or the charges are dismissed, the arresting agency *still gets to keep your shit*, unless you hire a lawyer, prove they have it, and prove it's yours. SCOTUS ruled it A-OK.
If they're going to do this anyway, might as well be people who deserve it.
So we are just in favor of stealing private property of the state now because someone somewhere might be doing something we disagree with?
That’s not how shit is supposed to work. You let a guilty person go free to prevent accidental punishing of an innocent.
You don’t do that by giving police the power to also be judge and jury. You must be proven guilty of a crime beyond reasonable doubt. Not just we can say we think you’re probably the guy so we are going to take some of your shit for our own profit.
The city has no authority to do more because “how can we know who’s actually driving the car from a speed camera ticket?”
I get that for one-off offenses, but they need to change the law to allow owners to be held liable for repeat offenses with drastically more stringent penalties.
The cameras used in NYC could technically capture the driver, but they are configured and legally restricted so they only record the vehicle and license plate. So it's a legal limitation not a camera limitation.
Because these are tickets from speed cameras. The law authorizing them does not allow such penalties due to concerns around establishing who was driving.
Because the cops cant catch them. NYC has a pretty big car culture that involves cutting up traffic on the highway at high speeds and escaping the cops. They get millions of YT views so it encourages them to continue doing it.
I editorialized the title as it is a sequel to the same post last year: [https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/1k0wt2m/meet\_new\_york\_citys\_most\_dangerous\_drivers\_and/](https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/1k0wt2m/meet_new_york_citys_most_dangerous_drivers_and/)
The cars this year:
\#1: Black 2023 Audi A6
\#2: Black 2017 Lexus IS
\#3: White 2023 RAM 1500
\#4 (tie): White 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class
\#4 (tie): Grey 2022 Chevrolet Malibu
\#6: White 2022 Ram 1500
\#7: Blue 2023 Chevrolet Silverado
\#8: Blue 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class
\#9: Grey 2024 BMW 760i
\#10: Grey 2024 Honda Passport
That black Audi A6, w/ $60,000 worth of tickets this year, of which 259 were in a school zone, is the same #1 as last year
Note, this person has also paid all $60k of those tickets. 4 others paid all or the majority of their fines. 5 have paid little to none & owe on average $20k
The list last year:
1. Black 2023 Audi A6
2. Blue 2015 Mercedes-Benz С 300
3. Black 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class
4. Gray 2022 Kia Forte
5. Black 2022 Chrysler Pacifica
6. Black 2022 Land Rover Range Rover
7. White 2024 Kia Forte
8. Black 2023 Chevrolet Suburban
9. Gray 2023 Toyota Camry
10. Yellow 2018 Ford taxicab
& as with last time,
\- these are rankings of individuals & the cars they drive, not which models committed the most speeding altogether
\- the vast, vast majority of these tickets are from automatic cameras, where you can't clearly attribute the ticket to a person, but you can make them responsible for paying a car registered in their name, hence no points on their license, correct me if I am wrong on this
\- the police are not allowed to chase for traffic infractions, violations, etc.
I see this the opposite way - I’m not on the speeders side - but the data clearly shows they are not the dangerous driver.
All that speeding, all those tickets and no crashes. Yet, crashes happen every day by people who are not on the list.
The data shows the opposite of what you are suggesting!
> All that speeding, all those tickets and no crashes.
> The data shows the opposite of what you are suggesting!
Depends on your philosophy.
Is something dangerous because of the behaviour? Or because of the end result?
Speeding causes accidents. This is a fact no?
The A6 driver can be ken block reincarnate but that doesn't really matter. Other drivers see them weaving through traffic and think "I can do that too"
Probably a rental actually. Some driver rented one, racked up an insane amount of tickets, and then returned it. Cutting up traffic is a pretty big culture in the NYC area.
I doubt it, the police just dont really do much here
It's not really an efficient use of resources anyways, you cant do much w/o immediately endangering others
Mainly bc it’s NYC, which I assumed would have less trucks than most places. I also assumed it was all going to be rich people sports cars that didn’t care about money.
The rich mostly Uber or use the subway in NYC, but plenty of them have cars that primarily sit in garages until they need them. Even in the outer boroughs, if you're in close proximity to a subway stop, you don't really need a car.
yeah, & any decent driving road is at least \~40min out anyways, best case, often quicker to just take a train to a garage & drive from there
even if you're absolutely adamant on driving around you'd probably pick up an m3, x5m, etc.
I'm in Chicago, not NYC, but police literally do not do speeding related traffic stops here (unless they're pretextual). Getting any in a major city like this is amazing.
The speed cameras were have aren't capable of identifying who is currently driving the vehicle, so the fines are held to the vehicle registration using the plates. This is also a reason why some people will cover or obstruct their plates when driving...
The camera usually does not capture *who* is driving. Just the vehicle itself is seen. It could be argued that someone not registered to the vehicle was driving. I am not disagreeing with your overall point, just explaining why it does not typically happen. Also, someone having their license suspended will not suddenly prevent them from still driving anyway. The people on lists like these have already proven they don't give a fuck. Howver, if they get caught by an actual officer and not just a camera, they could possibly be arrested and/or have their vehicle impounded. This varies by state though
The police could very easily find these people. They are obviously speeding on their commutes and getting tickets on the same road more days than not. NYPD has decided not to care.
You are missing the point. If someone is getting a ticket the majority of days (by the way these are time stamped and GPS located) it would be extremely easy to stop them and give them actual tickets.
I think NY law is that after a sufficient number of tickets, the registered owner begins to accumulate points on their license. Not sure if a lawyer can get you out of that though. And obviously registering the car to an LLC sidesteps that problem.
Almost all of these are automated (as in out of all of his tickets, 1 was done by an officer). In 18mos if you get 3 tickets by an actual officer, you'd have your license suspended. But the automated cameras don't ticket the driver, only "the car", so you only get fines
There is a bill (A2299) that would attempt to stop this by installing a speed limiter on the car following 18 tickets
Wonder how they landed on 18 tickets. Odd number.
The automatic tickets are interesting. A judge in Florida just found they were unconstitutional (both state and fed constitutions) because it placed burden on the owner to prove they weren't in the car instead of the other way around.
\> Wonder how they landed on 18 tickets. Odd number.
Apparently I got it wrong, its 16 tickets in a year, or 11 points in an 18 month period, oops
\> The automatic tickets are interesting.
Yeah, NY ruled the opposite [https://www.amny.com/law/manhattan-appellate-court-upholds-legality-of-speed-camera-tickets-after-years-long-battle/](https://www.amny.com/law/manhattan-appellate-court-upholds-legality-of-speed-camera-tickets-after-years-long-battle/), that being able to challenge at a hearing is enough notice & opportunity
I get both sides but when you have a city & traffic that dense then manual work is a bit impractical
I don’t get both sides. You’re responsible for whoever you let drive your car. I’d be down with saying that a car’s first camera ticket in a calendar year doesn’t carry points, but after that they should be just like a cop-written ticket.
> I get both sides but when you have a city & traffic that dense then manual work is a bit impractical
The idea that the cops can't use a device to check your speed is insane, imagine if Standards and Measures (Or whatever it's called) wasn't allowed to weigh that WalMart steak to ensure it actually weighs half a pound?
They can do that just fine, they are not allowed to chase in traffic afterwards, & they'd arguably be better off keeping watch of a station where there there are both more people and it is far less dangerous to just chase on foot
It would be interesting to know the average speed these drivers were ticketed for. It’s pretty easy to get a speed camera ticket for going 36 in a 30 mph revenue zone. That said, I suppose if you’re paying off $60k in tickets (rather than modifying your behavior) or not paying at all, you’re probably transgressing speed limits substantially.
“It’s pretty easy to get a speed cameras ticket for going 36 in a 30.”
No, it’s not. In fact, nobody gets camera tickets for that level of speeding in nyc, because the [threshold is 10mph over](https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/speed-camera-faq.pdf).
“Revenue zone”
Actually, these cameras are so effective at reducing speeding that, once the public becomes aware of a camera location, the cameras wind up costing more to operate than they bring in revenue.
This is completely false.
Data from the cameras shows dramatic decreases in speeding at camera locations. The decrease is substantial to the degree that once the driving public is aware of them, the cameras eventually start actually costing the city more money to operate than they bring in revenue.
You got data to support that point? Because here's a study that says the exact opposite.
https://rscj.newark.rutgers.edu/news/study-automated-speed-cameras-improved-road-safety-in-nyc/
https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2520328122
You can in KY too. Some counties below Fayette no longer chase or bother after the hellcat incident a few years back. Anything actually fast they just let go and won’t chase or attempt to ticket despite state police station being nearby.
Yea I know a lot of individual counties, cities and sheriff departments have non pursuit policies but the state police will chase you to the end of the earth if you run lol
Same crowd that buys the 2/3/4 series and A/C class. They think they're hot shit cause they're rocking a luxury brand and now that makes them better than the commoners. Even if it's the entry level offering.
The Altima stereotype is outdated in my experience, at least in Canada. On average, drivers of RAM pickups, Chargers, and G37s scare me more than Altima drivers.
Toronto here. The Altimas are still pretty bad but I'm mostly scared of black V6 Chargers and Hyundai Elantras with a Khalistan sticker on the rear window.
Tickets apply to the car, not the driver because speed cameras can’t/don’t capture driver’s face. So the ticket goes to whoever is responsible for the registration of that car.
My first thought is diplomatic plates and they know they won't have any consequences. But if they actually are paying the fines I guess they have f u money. But not an f u money car.
This is why I feel we, as a populace, should be finding these people on the road, stopping them as a group, and beating the ever living shit out of them. You know who else threatens thousands of people? Terrorists.
can confirm white Ram drivers are shitheads. The only guy rolling coal on, and arguing with, No Kings Rally protestors in my area was driving a white Ram.
Let’s honestly to say, NYC is most worse place to driver, and most drivers there are suck. It’s doesn’t matter what cars are.
I still remember someone talked me that NY could allow you without any driver test if you had driver license from other world. You could just switch driver license in there.
strongly disagree,
its quite ... stimulating if you haven't experienced it before, but everyone is so impatient and selfish that after a while it's gets quite calming & predictable. You can stick in the nose, parallel park, etc. w/o issue, everyone knows they'd do it too, everyone zipper merges w/o issue
its still a city, but I'd rather drive here than SF
\> I still remember someone talked me that NY could allow you without any driver test if you had driver license from other world. You could just switch driver license in there.
Not how it works at all, for most states incl. NY you will need to pas the written test, a pre-license course, & road test just like anyone else. Only very very few select states allow for an exchange, & only w/ select countries. only exceptions are Canadians
If you are a non-resident, visitor, then you can use your international license indefinitely, but the same applies for US licenses across the world. Residents need to switch in 30 days
This data is people who have readable license plates. Where are [these idiots](https://youtu.be/2fQeejiuvLM?si=SbvhrTbirzpAziC0) recording themselves doing 120mph down a random street while chased by the cops over and over?
