Crude oil just hit $110/barrel!
dojogrl@reddit
I think I need to just bite the bullet and get one. I live in LA, and the bus service is cheap but just awful. Would love for an ebike to be my main mode of transpo, but so afraid of LA drivers!
Spiritdiritcel@reddit
Exactly why an e-bike is an investment everyone should make assuming they aren't disabled and even then there's e-trikes for those who can't balance.
JanterFixx@reddit
Currently I can get a perfectly fine/new motorcycle for the same cost or even lower than the ebike - ebike still is a niche, a great niche, but still a niche. Motorcycle can offer me more. It has also cons, but overall it beats an ebike.
if the prices would come from 3-5k normal bike to 1-2.5k, then it would fly higher
Any_Sheepherder1939@reddit
these e bikes are dirt bikes not road motorcycles
hi_jack23@reddit
Cheapest new motorcycle I can think of is a Navi for $2200. To compare that to Lectric as one example, there’s only 1 bike they sell exceeding that price. The cheapest is only $800.
However, I think that with ebikes the beauty is how they offer less and are more efficient. Ebikes are light and nimble while motorcycles weigh 5-20x more, ebikes can be put onto a bus rack or carried onto a train, and even the most efficient motorcycles (for example a Grom, 165 MPG) with favorable $2.50/gallon gas would still cost 1.5¢/mile. Meanwhile, an ebike battery will typically go 40-60 miles/kWh. Using the national average of 18¢/kWh that’s 0.3-0.45¢/mile, which means fueling the Grom is 3.33-5x more expensive just to cover the same distance.
Adept_Spirit1753@reddit
Blasphemy!!
Adept_Spirit1753@reddit
Everyone? If my commute is 30km one way through hilly area, should I also buy it?
snoogins355@reddit
Look into the 72 volt e-bikes. They can go fast but you don't need to (same with a car). They have crazy range and powerful motors. The technology over the past few years is really good
Adept_Spirit1753@reddit
Thanks, I can just buy a motorcycle.
snoogins355@reddit
But then you're using gas. More efficient than a car, I guess
stormdelta@reddit
I mean electric motorcycles do exist.
The real neglected market is legal mopeds (electric or otherwise) since the US laws around them are severely outdated (or in some cases, deliberately written to make mopeds impractical).
Adept_Spirit1753@reddit
But we were discussing e-bikes, not motorcycles cosplaying as e-bikes.
snoogins355@reddit
Found the New Jersey legislator!
kcattattam@reddit
Bro I regularly put in 65km days on my BBSHD build, which eats gills for breakfast. If you can't charge at your destination, just buy an extra battery and enjoy the ride!
Adept_Spirit1753@reddit
Will it add shower to my destination?
kcattattam@reddit
You are asking some pretty dumb questions! My BBSHD pulls me up the hills, so I need not exert any effort (unless I want to). In fact this was the main reason I built my e-commuter; so I could ride to work with dewpoints 25°C+ and not sweat! You may need a shower if you are too dumb to take one at home
KillingSelf666@reddit
We need e-bikes that can function in the middle of a 115° summer day. I can’t use my bike during the day for 3 months out of the year, and those 3 months happen to have 13-hour long days.
Living_In_Wonder@reddit
Saw an older guy on an electric wheelchair doing a grocery run. If not an ebike, an e personal transport is a good idea as well.
Hockey_player__@reddit
Op has a previous post shitting on e-bikes🤣💀
John-AtWork@reddit (OP)
No I don't. What I have shitted on are the regulations that are descriminatory.
JedNN88@reddit
+ ever increasing parking cost in big cities!
TEGHD1@reddit
I’m very happy I have one!! More people start switching to them if things keep up
WaltzGold4201@reddit
Yeah same here honestly. I’ve been commuting on a Mokwheel Basalt and the more I ride it the more it just makes sense. I did the math the other day out of curiosity — about 10 miles a day round trip for the last two years.
When I compared that to gas prices… man, the money I didn’t spend on fuel could probably buy a few more ebikes by now
Relative-Ad-8679@reddit
Im blessed with a few
Superb_Raccoon@reddit
And... now it is $77, falling 17% so far.
John-AtWork@reddit (OP)
And now it's hanging out around $90.
Superb_Raccoon@reddit
Which is a far cry from some of the $200+ numbers in these threads.
Unlikely-Rabbit948@reddit
Well, that's not how it works. It's not only the fuel for bikes that is affected by gas prices but the bikes themselves. The food you eat, the clothes you wear, everything is affected by the price of oil. Oil is used to transport you goods, it's used to make anything plastic, it's used in medicine. So maybe you might not spend as much on fuel for transportation but it will affect you.
John-AtWork@reddit (OP)
All true, but your ebike gets the equivalent of 1,500 mpg, so at least it is a much more affordable form of transportation. This could add up to real savings compared to just driving one's car.
Unlikely-Rabbit948@reddit
This statement is the equivalent of saying “be glad the gas station 60 miles away is 10 cents cheaper.”
John-AtWork@reddit (OP)
Not always. My commute time is about equal on my bike and when I drive. The ebike is slower, but I don't have to worry about parking or traffic congestion.
JanterFixx@reddit
motorcycle also needs gas, but i still think it is better option than ebike for the most of the people
jms1228@reddit
I have two lol
snoogins355@reddit
3 with my wife's and I'm looking into getting another one this spring. I need more speed and range for a 27 mile commute each way. My mid-drive is good but I get tired of shifting up and down constantly in the city with traffic. Also 28 mph isn't fast enough in the suburbs riding with cars going 35+ a few feet away.
MarlinMaverick@reddit
You do that twice a day?
snoogins355@reddit
Yes, when the weather is good and twice a week (in office 2 days per week). Takes 2h 12m but is very predictable (I've timed it 6 times), fun, free, a good workout (I don't like using the throttle, except starting from a stop). With driving it can take 45 minutes before 5AM or 2+ hours with bad traffic and it is very stressful in the Boston metro. Riding the rail trail in fall is straight up magical as the leaves change and the temps cool off. I could drive, get stress and workout after work or ride, be happy and get 2 hours of good cardio on my way to work and home. My office has a secure garage and a locker room but I do not get very sweaty unless it's 90°F out
MarlinMaverick@reddit
My daily commute is also 28 miles one way, per Google that’s a 2+ hour ride each way (probably assuming pedal bike speeds), or 40 min by car. I’d never see my family if I changed my commute up
snoogins355@reddit
Why I need the faster bike
J_silence@reddit
I get that completely. A lot of my commute to work includes roadside bike lanes as well as having to be on the road sometimes where there isn't any bike lanes. I understand this community's problems with Emotos but that's why I do my best to follow the rules of the road and make sure my e bike actually looks like a bike with pedals.
Some_Journalist_1364@reddit
Well over 28 isn’t an ebike anymore… e-moto territory
Breynolds003@reddit
28mph? Florida is doing anything over 10mph as a moped, motorized or not
snoogins355@reddit
Fair enough. I just want to get around without driving. But we only build and maintain car infrastructure. My town is lucky to have a rail trail that runs for neighborhoods to a regional train station and the downtown and close to the school zone (elementary, junior high and high school are in the same complex). But the town doesn't plow or maintain it in winter, so it still has over a foot of snow. I wish they would do one pass with an F150 plow truck. So it's biking on the road, uncomfortable and unsafe unless you can get up to car speeds
Evening_Visual_8325@reddit
Ain't nobody plowing snow with an f150
MuchKey7664@reddit
Why would they not? I had
RazzmatazzEastern786@reddit
Lol, plenty of small towns use F series trucks to plow roads... typically 250 or 350s but my college campus used a 150 for the pedestrian walkways and such
snoogins355@reddit
Come by my little crappy town!
thirtynation@reddit
So what?
thewimsey@reddit
You need license and registration?
thirtynation@reddit
So what?
snoogins355@reddit
More government regulation will solve the issues! /s
Cops in my state won't even pull over cars going 40+ over the speed limit!
Some_Journalist_1364@reddit
I guess that’s the argument lots of states are having now about licensing and insurance…
snoogins355@reddit
Probably funded by the car dealership industrial complex
thirtynation@reddit
So what?
Unlucky_Battle_6947@reddit
No it’s not.
jaygoogle23@reddit
Same. I put custom 3 inch wide tires on mine.
J_silence@reddit
Trump's destruction of the economy and the guarantee that he'd do something stupid enough to skyrocket oil prices is the exact reason I invested in an E bike.
FerlaBikes@reddit
This is exactly the moment when people realize what they are really for. Daily errands, school runs, and commuting on two wheels while fuel prices simply stop being your concern. Hard to beat that feeling!
bonfuto@reddit
Some people are saying that $200 a barrel is possible.
Superb_Raccoon@reddit
$77 today.
Such_Can_5353@reddit
still not enough, $500-1000 would be noticeable. 200 isn't enough for US. when US average gas price is $2.50, europe pays $7-10 a gallon. so ours will go up to $4-5, europe will be $15-20.
OddAstronaut2305@reddit
Hope so. Fuck around; find out.

The Democrats voted to not block Trump's war. Both parties want this war are in on it together. Both parties deserve smoke not just Trump.
jekkies-@reddit
the overwhelming majority of democrats in congress DID vote to block Trump's war. out of a 263 democrats, 258 voted to block Trump's war. so no, this is not a "both parties" thing. not even close.
do u understand what a supermajority is? ur either intentionally trying to be misleading, or u didn't even bother to look at the votes.
digitalaudiotape@reddit
You've been duped. Please watch these 2 videos explaining the "Rotating Villain" strategy that the Democrats use routinely:

The Democrats strategically vote to help get items unpopular with liberal voters passed but not catch blame for backstabbing us.
The Democrats serve their donors: corporations and the Epstein class; Democrats don't give a fuck about what voters want. The Democrats and Republicans have the same donors by the way. We don't really have 2 parties. The Democrats are controlled opposition to the Republicans.
The Democrats pulled the same shit to allow Trump to gut healthcare during the previous government shutdown even though the Democrats had the upperhand and had no reason to cave.
The Democrats also voted to deliberately delayed the war powers resolution till after the first attack happened.
https://www.commondreams.org/news/dems-sabotage-iran-war-powers-resolution
If the Democrats wanted to stop this war they would have (like the dating cliché "If he wanted, to he would")
To see proof of how the Democrats did want a war with Iran please watch this supercut of the top US politicians of the past 20 years including Democrats saying on camera that they wanted war with Iran. Attacking Iran has been bipartisan American policy for decades:

The Democrats are our friends as much as Santa Claus is real.

I owned an electric bike for 9 days before it was stolen
Einn1Tveir2@reddit
Be glad it wasn't a car, would have lost way more money.
JanterFixx@reddit
lolz, ebike costs more, 2nd hand car is on par with ebike, and will be less target for stealing
Einn1Tveir2@reddit
that 2nd hand car will start cost you alot more when you pay for gas, insurance, fees, maintenance and repairs. And you can always get a 2nd hand ebike.
Also, ebikes don't have to be very expensive. I bought mine from a quality brand for the equivalent of 1300usd. Just a basic, 250w ebike.
Strykerdude1@reddit
Glad but wish I paid more for a mid drive lol. I assume those are more efficient… my battery drops quick being a 3000w dual motor. I feel like I’m riding a tank around sometimes.
snoogins355@reddit
Switch to rear only to save battery
Strykerdude1@reddit
Yeah that helps a bit. I think I just need a lighter bike.
snoogins355@reddit

CrookedtalePirates@reddit

JanterFixx@reddit
even with higher gas prices, motorcycle is much more viable and overall better option. dont get me wrong, ebikes are great, but they are a great niche - still niche - motorcycles also have cons, but overall, they are better value for money
673NoshMyBollocksAve@reddit
How many miles does a motorcycle get on a tank of gas?
thewimsey@reddit
70-100 mpg for smaller motorcycles. Range depends on tank size.
CrookedtalePirates@reddit
I do agree there. Especially for long rides for daily commuting.
JanterFixx@reddit
i do not take anything from ebike - it feels more liberating that motorcycle in most of the days, and it is easy to hop on and off, for urban stuff
Alaris_84@reddit
I am! I have a Brompton with a front hub kit, and mostly use a Yamaha Xmax 300 for longer trips. =D

Im living in France and city streets got very car unfriendly so Im telling you I can easily divide by two my commute time, and with the freedom of a personal vehicule, not depending on buses and trains. I can even get a little share of country side in the outskirts with decent battery management.
OddAstronaut2305@reddit
Can’t wait until the weather is good enough to ride to work consistently. I have an electric car but my lease is up in May, have an ICE car or two but I will be riding as much as possible. Thinking about getting a small trailer to tow behind the bike for grocery trips.
jlynnbizatch@reddit
I've been car-free for 8 years now and don't regret it one bit.
Little_Ad7758@reddit
American friends, what are your thoughts on this war between the United States and Iran?
Randy-Waterhouse@reddit
It is imperialism outside the mandate of the people. Not that we haven’t done this kind of bullshit for centuries, but never so brazen. It will make some elite people very wealthy and most other people poor and miserable.
The thing is, we are also a breed of the elite. Definitely country cousins to the psychopaths at the top, but our bourgeois privilege gives us options many others haven’t had. We have the luxury of circumstance where we live and what we do for a living to not have to drive a hundred miles a day just to afford rent and groceries. We have some small degree of discretion and autonomy and financial wherewithal.
Our role is to keep demonstrating it is possible to prosecute business without conventional fossil-fuel mobility, so a version of our lifestyle can translate to people who will soon be backed into a corner.
thirtynation@reddit
It's not a war. It's a temporary action taken for corrupt reasons: make the rich richer and to lay the groundwork for fucking with the midterms.
John-AtWork@reddit (OP)

morgan423@reddit
I'm so happy to have an ebike for short trips and exercise, an EV for longer trips, and a solar source for a large chunk of the charging.
There's going to be a lot of pain at the pump for everyone who has to fill a gas tank often, and I'm happy not to be one of those people experiencing it.
JezzaP@reddit
We're the same. Gotta admit there's a little bit of schadenfreude with my colleagues who gave me shit about cycling to work and owning an EV.
Although I'm not looking forward to the rising fuel costs affecting the rest of the cost of living crisis.

Most definitely. Of course I'll probably be getting some new batteries after not too long. Got a Bafang 1000W mid drive on my Catrike and a Narrak 500W hub drive. Need to replace the bottom bracket section on my Bafang 750 though.
Too bad Luna gave up on producing those potted batteries. Now I got to find another supplier.
My motorcycle will probably see more action too. The pickup truck doesn't get driven too much as it is. Might be time to mothball it🤣🤣🤣
