Why is the age of 18 so important in American culture?

Asking as an American myself. A lot of people think there's something magical about turning 18. It makes you "an adult." There's so many strict parents who will automatically stop caring what their kids do once they go to bed on their 18th birthday. It's literally just an arbitrary number. You can be under 18 and be very mature, and you can be 50 and still act like a child. Why do we prescribe so much meaning to this number? In a lot of other countries, 18 is only of legal importance, not cultural.
