I don’t understand… is there a general demand for more screens from customers? Is it just a pissing match between brands? Passenger side screens that show the weather or some other info just seem absolutely useless since most people will just looking at their phones.

It's essentially just that but a red and black steering wheel and more chrome interior trim instead of blacked out. It was the start of that aesthetic and its been around ever since.

to me, it has a lot of similarities with the [chevy equinox ev.](https://gmauthority.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/2024-Chevrolet-Equinox-EV-Interior-Colors-008-3RS-Evotex-Adrenaline-Red-EPJ-1200x675.jpg) So much so that I find it hard to believe it didn't have an influence and its like a 20k car.
That's what I was thinking, in terms of the overall cockpit layout. I find the Chevy's interior boring, but the Merc's is... strip-club-tier. Which is worse.
Thats the only trend im fine with because the vast majority like it and if you dont you can turn it off. The real issue is all these screens all the time that u cant hide
To be fair, the people buying this car new (the customers that Mercades actually does and should care about), that doesn't matter at all. The vast majority of consumers want more screens and more "high tech" and are willing to pay for it and feel like it makes their experience more luxurious.
Literally the only people that care how this car will "age" are people on this subreddit, and funny enough, literally almost none of them buy cars new lol.
The funny thing about these screen dashboards is that the first Mercedes that I remember seeing it on (the EQS?) has an option for a wood dashboard that actually looks REALLY NICE.
Non-car people for some reason judge the “worth” of your car on the size of the screen. They think bigger screen means you have a fancy car. That’s why you see manufacturers moving towards that direction.
It's why Cadillac insists on a single ultra wide display, so they can tout a 33 inch screen or whatever that actually has less real estate than many other cars.
I think this is a general truth, and not just for screens. Had a coworker a few years back comment about my BMW 1 series that I could have gotten a 3 series for similar money and that it didn't make sense to buy it when you could have gotten a bigger car.
Generally, sports car enthusiasts and urban dwellers with very limited space are the main groups that consider small cars more desirable than large cars.
Fundamentally, luxury boils down to using more resources than you absolutely need (large house, fashionable clothing, luxury watches, fine dining, large cars). That applies to sports cars too, it's just that the luxury is speed and power (energy use). For luxury cars, it's materials, space, and "presence" which is another word for size - or at least the illusion of it.
Where do you think they can can go from here? The next generations will have smaller and smaller bezels, but what is the end game? Whatever you think about the strip club vibe it's here to stay, because design-wise they are painting themselves into a corner. You can't design a good looking dash or anything if you're boxed in with flat screen surfaces everywhere so what's left is cheap led lighting for differentiation.
Screens are already being metaphorically shoved down our throats. But I'm waiting for the day when there's a car with a screen on the steering wheel, so when you inevitability get in a distracted driving accident the screen is *physically* shoved down your throat
Screens generally are almost given away these days (65” TVs are $300) because they’re essentially advertising billboards in your living room and now your car.
They're not putting high dollar screens in vehicles though. There's not 4k OLED 140hz specs on these things. And the touch latency? Awful.
It's definitely cheaper to have everything software controlled by what amounts to a external travel monitor with touch capabilities.
It depends on the model. Cadillac for instance, uses a curved OLED with twice the pixel density of a 4k tv on their Escalade. The 2025/6 version uses a even bigger 8k one spanning the entire dash.
Some brands do use high quality (and likely extremely expensive to replace) screens.
it was gimmicky when Ferrari introduced it so that the passenger could also get key information in front of them (just a small strip) but expanding it into an infotainment size screen is just unnecessary
Well I wasn’t going to buy one of these anyways, so Mercedes doesn’t care what I think. But sheesh that’s dreadful. Glad that many automakers are rolling back the screen-only concept in favour of a better balance.
Honestly, i think it’s great. There’s physical buttons for everything you need and the climate controls on the touch screen are permanently on the bottom.
I will admit that I agreed with you before I got one but I didn’t have any other choices for vehicles.
They are planning to do this, right? I was under the impression that Subaru would transition all interiors to their new buttons+screen style when each model gets the interior refreshed.
They don't even care what their buyers want. The EQ series and a 4-cylinder C63 was a proof of that. Eventually they scraped those but it took a while.
20 years ago my friend and I went to a Hot Import Nights car show. People modified their cars with 20 speakers, video game consoles, and tons of colored lighting everywhere.
I thought it was crazy but also fun to see.
Maybe this will still appeal to that crowd but most of the people I know who can afford an AMG have grown out of that kind of aesthetic. I know I have.
This is what I was thinking. As much as I find that interior absolutely *hideous*, I do think it's very well designed for the kind of people I imagine would be buying this kind of vehicle. Absurdly rich men with more money than taste, for whom this car would be an accessory to be seen (and heard) in as they arrive at an expensive nightclub where they'll be paying a king's ransom to mix expensive whiskey with pepsi.
I'm sure there'll be people who'll buy this to enjoy driving it, but I doubt they'll be the majority.

I'm but sure that's the case. This may be an AMG, but it's also an EV. The kind of people who want a flashy, visually overwhelming interior don't typically want the car to be silent. They want it as brash and boisterous as the interior is visually. The 4 liter V8 with pops and bangs is what they're after.
I could be wrong, but I think the car will sell very poorly and the interior design will be one of the reasons.
Heavy use of organic shapes around the interior hints at the fact the Chinese market will be front and centre for this, it works well except that centre screen - something about the curves on the right hand side corners, along with the hard corners of the display itself, give it a 2003 iMac feel that doesn't work.
I did this to a brand new AMG GT at the dealer a few weeks ago and told them it was unacceptable. They forced me to spend the next 45 minutes reiterating to them over and over and over again why it wasn't okay for a $165k car to be piano black plastic, cheap silver plastic, and capacitive buttons that already don't work.
The sad thing is this thing won’t sell well with that disgusting interior and then Mercedes will blame “lower EV demand than expected”. People just want their car to look like a normal car with knobs and buttons.
Ferrari has shown that having screens as displays doesn’t have to be boring and half-assed with their new EV. They’ve really set the bar for me and everything I’ve seen new since then has been weak.
I honestly think these decisions are made years beforehand. They committed to this garbage years ago and nome have to follow true. Out feelings do not matter it will take years until you the go back.
Just from looking at the thumbnail, yikes. I had a 2024 Panamera loaner that had a passenger screen and at least it looks blended into the dashboard, this one looks like an iPad glued on (I have experience with iPad glued on infotainment centers)

M156, tbh once I got the C63 I drove the slk a lot less. The 7g trans is such a weak point that it is hard to fully enjoy the engine with how laggy the shifting is. I do love the sound of course and the pre facelift c63 has that problem as well.
But I adored the M113 for years, love it.
I mean people have been hating on the screen trend in every car for like the past 5 years regardless of price, so no I don’t think people would be swooning if they saw this in a cheaper car. MB for what it’s worth has really leaned into the screens, ambient lights, grille lighting etc which I sort of in a roundabout way respect. It’s not my taste, if the rest of the car is stellar I can overlook it, but at least they’re going all in on it.
The ford mustang is an affordable car for many users here.
