The first one has a raw, 70s enthusiasm that definitely helped create modern movie car chases. The second one is just amazing and uses its big hollywood budget so effectively.

Ronin is good, but Bullit is the best ever. Even though they drive by the same green VW bug multiple times and once you realize that makes you wonder what would happen if they were chasing the magical teleporting VW bug? Still just pure classic cinema and my favorite ever.

The way they edited what they got makes it look like they chase each other around the same three blocks at least twice before leaving town. And it's been my own headcanon since. 😂

To Live and Die in LA. the wrong way on the freeway scene is still one of the most intense things ever filmed. william friedkin (same guy who did french connection) shot it with real traffic and stunt drivers. no cgi, no tricks, just a camera in a car going the wrong way while other cars swerve around it its criminal how overlooked that movie is compared to bullitt

Fast & Furious 5 with the safe-chase scene. We've all seen great car chases, and this may not be as beautifully shot or realistic as most mentioned here. But Jesus Christ it's so much fun and such a simple addition (effectively a tag-team wrecking ball) that just elevates it.

Gotta be either Vanishing Point which is basically a feature film length chase scene, or the OG Gone in 60 Seconds. The movie itself is painfully dated, but the chase is just incredible... partially because they didn't get permission from the city to be filming a chase scene, so when they hit something they weren't supposed to, they really did take off like they were trying to get away from the cops.

The Gumball Rally (1976). Basically the entire movie. "The firsta rule of Italian driving: whatsa behind me, is not important". If you haven't seen this movie, do yourself a favor and watch it ASAP. The first chase in The Transporter (2002) with the BMW. The final chase in 2000's Gone in 60 Seconds with the Eleanor Shelby Mustang GT500 The remake Vanishing Point (1997) with Viggo Mortensen. Keeps all of the car chases of the original, without all of the 1970's weirdness.

The reason it was re-used was that someone was severly injured and left paralyzed during the actual filming and filming was forced to be shutdown for some time for safety. My guess is that to maintain the schedule, they cut trying to make the original shot safely and used pre-existing footage.

I feel like No Mans Land doesn't get mentioned enough, some great/fun scenes in that movie. I imagine the chase you're referring to is when they steal the silver 930 in the parking garage, but the other scene closer to the beginning where Bill meets Ted in the Hollywood hills and they race the Cabrio through the hills to "test" it

There was a lot of CGI, it was just well blended with the practical work.

Good CGI is like good plastic surgery. It goes unnoticed.

Blues Brothers Original. Cop motor, cop tyres, cop suspension. Built before regulations so she'll run good on regular gas. 100 miles to Chicago. Full tank of gas half a pack of cigarettes. Hit it. *Chaos ensues.

Barricade chasing Bumblebee in the first Transformers. Two badass rival muscle cars in an urban chase to Pretty Handsome Awkward by The Used. Shame it was so brief but I’ve loved that scene since I was a kid.

Bullet. Is the only answer. All other movies mentioned involve fake sounds and not realistic in the least. Not saying any chase scene is realistic but I'm saying in the least.

My favorite is probably Ronin, but that's in a large part for the making-of (fitting RHD cars with a "fake" driver's side on the left for the actor).

Extraction. Not a particularly brilliant film, but the seamless, one-take chase scene is surprisingly well shot and my main takeaway from the film.

Dirty mary, crazy larry. Whole movie is a chase, and the charger vs hemi cop car is pretty great. Honorable mention to the chase with charlie sheen, red bmw 325i running from the cops, the best part being the cadavers being spilled all over the road.
