I mean, there's,"first day on the job" and then there's first day on Earth. It's pretty evident which one this is.
Mr_Jack_Frost_@reddit
It’s basically the same as backing up a trailer, IIRC. It really is not that difficult. This video is brutal.
Rocker4JC@reddit
Reminds me of the time I tried to train a dude for our team at FedEx Ground. We were literally in a cargo van. Like the size of a Chevy minivan. The guy could not back into a parking space in an empty lot to save his life. He couldn't get his brain wired around the concept of which way to turn the wheel to make the vehicle go the way he wanted while in reverse. He ended up turning the wrong way, and then overcorrecting the other way... Every. Damn. Time. For two hours.
This dude was like 45. He didn't get hired.
Mr_Jack_Frost_@reddit
Oh my gosh, poor guy.. I learned the concept of how to back up with and without a trailer pretty early on due to driving a lawnmower from an early age. We’d sometimes put a small trailer on the lawnmower to help clean up yard debris, and eventually driving it became my or my little brother’s job, so we both got a crash course in driving at like 8 years old, haha.
Rocker4JC@reddit
Yeah, I learned how to back up riding quads/ATVs as a kid. Same deal with the utility trailer, too.
Mr_Jack_Frost_@reddit
Yep! I guess if you don’t learn it early, it’s probably pretty tricky to pick it up later.

Wish the video didn't cut off there. You could see when it clicked and he realized he was pushing it the wrong way.
geneticdeadender@reddit
It takes some time to learn.
But also, the narrow pallet jacks like this one are harder to use. I've been using g them for 40 years and even I struggle a bit with these modified jacks.
Aqueouspolecat@reddit (OP)
Harder to use? Like it's harder backing up a shunt truck?
geneticdeadender@reddit
They turn faster and can tip over because of the narrow body.
bananslickarn@reddit
Those pallet jacks are the standards for EU pallets no? They dont tip over easy unless you try to tip them
geneticdeadender@reddit
I'm from the US. Our jacks tend to be wider and lower to the ground.
Occasionally I see these jacks (in the video) that are more narrow and they definitely tip more easily. Especially if you are used to the wilder variety.
bananslickarn@reddit
The jack won't tip, the goods will if its stacked high and badly packaged
Aqueouspolecat@reddit (OP)
Well you have 9 more years of experience over me so you must be right.
geneticdeadender@reddit
Plus everything is harder when someone is watching or filming.
Aqueouspolecat@reddit (OP)
That's just a myth. It's all in your head.
Frequent-Piano6164@reddit
The sad part is they are watching and filming g instead of easily fixing the situation and helping that person learn… this is what is wrong in society as a whole, people would rather film a fail than take 5 seconds and help…
Aqueouspolecat@reddit (OP)
That's the sad part?
Frequent-Piano6164@reddit
Did you film this??
I worked at car dealership and watched detailers laugh at new lot techs using tire shine thinking it was wax. They would watch the person fail and laugh and never even correct the person… instead of taking two seconds to help the person, they laughed and watched the person fail. The lot tech had to start all over again, when they could’ve just helped before they started spraying tire shine instead of wax…
Aqueouspolecat@reddit (OP)
That's a good way to learn. The system is failing.
Frequent-Piano6164@reddit
Or, just help someone? You did film this, didn’t you…. If you did, you are part of the problem
Aqueouspolecat@reddit (OP)

Yep. 95% of the time, as great a back as you can get. Then suddenly you have to re do it 6 times while bemoaning your own stupidity. And usually when someone else is watching.
ChiDaddy123@reddit
At least when we do it we are looking over our shoulders and using mirrors and shit. It’s complicated.

VonBrewskie@reddit
Listen man. I'm going to give this dude the benefit of the doubt and assume that's a wonky floor jack. Because lawdamercy what are we doing otherwise?
Turbulent-Badger9894@reddit
I can relate somehow. My hooklift truck was in the garage for maitenence so i had to drive a with a semi and unload pallets for the first time in 7 years of driving. This guy at the dock gives me a code for an electric pallet jack with extended forks (knowing that every pallet i break wil not be replaced) so i went back to the guy and he actualy started to laugh when i asked for a manual pallet jack.
To make it worse this man saw me backing up to the dock. I was allowed to choose dock 1 or 2. I aimed for 1 and ended up at 2 after 3 times trying. So after seeing that i had no clue of what im doing he is still surpriced that i can't handle a pallet jack.
I know my way around heavy equipment, trucks, cranes, anything with a diesel engine. But a pallet jack in a trailer will be the thing i hate the most.
Hats off to the drivers that do this everyday so i dont have to
