Have you rediscovered any old school TV series that still stand up today? What are they?

I just discovered the original Miami Vice TV series on Amazon Prime and have been obsessed. I remembered snippets but mainly being packed off the bed as I was too young It was a gamble. Other childhood memories haven't stood up so well - I should have left the A-Team and street hawk where they were..... However - Miami Vice I still find SUPER cool in 2026, I'm shocked how well it's held up in fact.... .....but not as shocked as the Mrs will be when I emerge from the room on the first day of holiday wearing a pastille t shirt, white trousers and espadrilles smoking a lucky strike at breakfast. Anyways have you rediscovered any old school gems you haven't gotten into for viewing? What memories did they evoke? Do they stand up today?

It was actually called 'Chiller' (there's an American series called 'Chillers') and only had 4 episodes which aired in 1995. Martin Clunes was in one of them.

Currently rewatching Moonlighting - yes, dodgy bits and Bruce Willis's character is the ultimate version of that meme where the two men say the same thing and one response is "You're so sweet" and the other is "calling HR" but it's still got a lot of what it takes.

If you find ropey pre-CG special effects as charming as I do, I'd recommend Blake's 7. It's a really gritty science fiction space drama about a band of fugitives trying to take down the evil Federation. It literally plays like an anti-Star Trek and has some amazingly dark storylines even if it is a bit campy by modern standards. They also recently upgraded the special effects so you have the option to watch it that way if you'd prefer.

Blackadder, beyond a shadow of a doubt. I love them all but Goes Forth is a high water mark. It’s become a cliché to cite the final scene but it sends chills up my spine every time I watch. The combination of farce and deadly reality, the pathos and love that all the characters have earned in spades through the series makes it feel like you’re watching friends go over the top. The second and third series are just gloriously funny. I even have a soft spot for the first. Don’t slouch, Darling.

They won’t even commission more Dwarf, according to Doug Naylor. The commissioner’s logic goes ‘the only sci-fi comedy that’s ever worked is Dwarf, therefore we won’t commission Dwarf’. UKTV pulled the plug (part of their overall decision to stop funding all scripted comedy) with a script almost finished.

I don’t mind season 7. 8 I just can’t get on with. The less said about back to earth the better. Some of the newer episodes have some gold amongst some rubbish too. But 1-6 is some of the best comedy ever made. Many people might not know the one of the two original creators died earlier this week - Rob Grant.

Yeah, Back to Earth is the overall low point. Watched it when it first aired and then pretended it didn’t exist until very recently when I gave it another go last year for completeness on a full rewatch. Still don’t like anything about it. The newer stuff is what it is. I watch it, I like it, but it’s more out of nostalgia for what it used to be than because the quality is comparable to the first run. Real shame about Rob Grant. Just about finished his first new Red Dwarf book in about 30 odd years. Andrew Marshal is decent though, and I’m sure he’ll get it over the line. If you haven’t read them, the earlier books are really entertaining. The audio versions are really good, with Chris Barrie narrating a couple, Craig Charles doing one and Rob Grant the fourth. Well worth checking out if you’re a fan.

Yeah I’ve read them. I prefer the audiobooks as they seem more linked to the series somehow. I’m a secret red dwarf nerd. I used to go to sleep listening to the DVD commentaries of seasons 1-7 , which were entertaining in their own right 🤣.

For me it was the VHS of 1-6 as a student. 1-8 have been released as audio on Audible and I’ve been working my way through them again. Initially I thought it was a daft concept, then realised I can visualise the episode with my eyes closed. I’ve obviously seen them all way more than can be healthy

I've been listening to it on Radio 4 on the way to the office recently and I am amazed how well it works as a radio show. I know realistically it's just a group of people in a room talking, and I have the very picture of Sir Humphry in my head as he is delivering his monologues. It's great to listen to it.

I really can't stand anything with a laugh track nowadays but on this, people laugh in all the same places as me, so it's all good haha. I began re-watching this and looked up an episode guide with the intention of prioritise the "mythology" episodes because I was interested in the overarching storyline. However, I then discovered that the monster-of-the-week type episodes are generally far better. I think modern audiences are conditioned to shows like Breaking Bad which are generally quite slow and you can binge multiple episodes at a time, but the X Files pre-dates that culture.

I always remember how the first few episodes were pretty normal and then they found the frozen cat in the freezer and it just went berserk from there, to Angus Deaton machine-gunning gnomes, the high probability the neighbour has murdered his mother and Victor doesn't seem that bothered, and my low-key favourite, him telling someone to "put the plant in the bathroom" and coming back to find they've firmly planted it in the toilet bowl. Also the sausage dog telephone, and the realtime episode in the traffic jam (where you don't even realise for 15 minutes there's someone else in the car). Very underrated, it's bonkers.

Blake Seven season 1 holds up. Not be because of the sci-fi elements, that’s just background. What is fresh is the story of people fighting against av oppression e regime. Later seasons not so good but it does end in a bang.

I have a raspberry pi set up in my office so when I work from home it'll randomly play episodes of Peep Show, IT Crowd, The Office, Father Ted, Friday Night Dinner, Phoenix Nights, Red Dwarf, Black Books, Still Game. and all the Alan Partridge shows. All those I still find incredibly re-watchable

While the IT Crowd definitely has its moments (the work outing episode where they see Gay The Musical is one of the funniest self contained episodes of TV ever made), I think it overall hasn't always aged as well as Father Ted or Black Books, which are pretty timeless

A lot of the original run of Time Team has been uploaded to YouTube ("Time Team Classics") to raise the profile as they're doing new stuff now. Obviously Doctor Who isn't "under the radar" but all the 1963-89 show is on iPlayer now. A lot of it still stands up, especially if you make allowance for the constraints of budget/tech available. I know Silent Witness is still going but I started watching from the beginning and I'm enjoying it! It's erm... Of its time (some eps in season one on iPlayer have been removed due to being entirely inappropriate for a modern audience) but as long as you don't mind shit sexist jokes and a pathologist ending up in entirely unrealistic situations you'll be fine. Also, the 90s were wild - there's so many blokes in this show that the women call 'gorgeous' and it's just some chain smoking detective who looks like a bollock.

I watch old episodes of The Bill off and on. Lots of it is quite dated but at the same time they’re having the same problems the police are still having today. Weak leadership, lack of resources and so on. Father Ted is still absolutely hilarious. Some of it is a little dated. Still Game is unrivalled but there are a couple of jokes in there that are vaguely homophobic.

American who lived in the UK through the 90s and 00s. Loved West Wing when it came out mostly because I found it uplifting as it showed how compassionate, intelligent, and honest humanity, and a government, can be yet it was depressing at the same time because the US government just utterly fails to be like the show. Having that perspective I do think it would hold up well since those values are timeless but I just can’t bring myself to rewatch it in the current climate for fear of the crushing despair I would fall into.

Babylon 5 is just fantastic tv, it could be set on an island colony in the 19th century and it would still be superb (though everyone would wonder why there's aliens everywhere). characters you just loved to hate, hated to love, and some who were so mercurial you just give up. I mean Bester as a character. Konig played him so well, and he is unforgettable, despite only appearing in 12 of the 110 episodes. absolute class.

I watched the opening seasons of NCIS not that long ago. The causal sexism in a show that was from around 2000 is off the charts. They kill off a major character at the end of the first season, and in the opening show of the second, while they are all dealing with her death, she appears dressed in a schoolgirl outfit for most of it to satisfy the sexual fantasies of one of the main male characters. It’s weird. And it’s not that far back.

I just watched Prime Suspect, with Dame Helen Mirren, actually an incredibly deep and interesting police procedural. Also with some serious heavyweight actors popping up in some of their first roles; Ralph Fiennes, Jonny Lee Miller, David Thewlis, Mark Strong, Zoe Wannamaker, and many more. Also tackling some pretty big themes that resonate today, feminism, refugees, racial tensions etc.

I've just started re-watching ER on the 'flix. I was a bit wary because I remembered it fondly and thought a rewatch might destroy the nostalgia. But the first episode had me hooked all over again. There are some things that now look a bit dated (no mobile phones, dial-up internet is a new thing, x-rays are still on film, some classic 90s fashion and hair styles), but it holds up pretty well.

You might like [Poker Face](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poker_Face_\(TV_series\)), although you might have to sail the high seas to find it. It's in a similar vein to Columbo. You get to see the murder up front and then the rest of the episode is seeing how they figure it out. It's a bit cheesy in places, but if you like Columbo then it's worth checking out.

Depends how old really. The classic murder detectives are good - poirot, marple, jonathan creek, vera, prime suspect, waking the dead... ones that are older but still on the box are silent witness, early death in paradise (it tails off but is still watchable) Comedies: father ted, brass eye, the day today, league of gentlemen Drama: Band of Brothers is perfect. Deadwood, Hex Kids: Round the Twist, Trap Door, tintin, Batman - the animated series Nature: pretty much any of the attenborough stuff - life, life in cold blood, planet earth, blue planet, natural world.

If you like NCIS, I can recommend its predecessor JAG. It's a bit odd at the beginning as it changes networks after the first season, so there's a cliffhanger that never gets resolved, but still well worth a watch.

I rewatched The Mad Death on YouTube over a few lunch breaks. It was a three part horror drama on BBC from the seventies about a rabies outbreak in the UK and that was one I had to sneak to watch on th the black and white portable telly in my parents room. Its very seventies BBC drama but very well done and the bits with the rabid dogs was still quite scary.

How old school? I would recommend Sandbaggers from the late 70s. It is an espionage thriller that ran for three series (no-one called them "seasons" back then) and was cancelled when its creator died in mysterious circumstances. It deals with an elite section of SIS (aka MI6 but they never use the term) that runs special ops, but its real fascination is that mostly it is about the politics in Whitehall behind the job. It also has some of the most surprising plot twists that can be emotionally harrowing too. Its production values are of the time (shaky cameras, no modern SFX, locations sometimes obviously British places standing in for exotic ones - although in series 3 they got to shoot in Malta), and some of the entrenched gender bias of the era is very visible (although for the time some characters are fairly liberal, the words will not go down well with some today) so view it as an anthropological study of the era if easily offended.

My parents used to love detective/murder mystery programmes when I was growing up, but I absolutely hated them. I've been re-watching a lot of them over the last few years with my Mum, and and really started to love some of them. Poirot, the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes', the Joan Hickson Marple's, and Brother Cadfael are all excellent. Still can't get on board with Morse and Taggart, though.

Bought all the seasons of MASH. I remember snippets of it as a child. That theme music still today evokes a bitter sweet nostalgia as it used to finish on a Sunday night at 8 or 9 pm which was my bedtime and of course school the next day. Very good series, definitely a little cheesy at times but also poignant. Noticed a few up and coming actors that started out in that show.

Just finished rewatching the whole series. Bloody brilliant. Cheesy effects at times and some over acted death scenes but kind of makes it work for what it is. Some of the set battles are pretty impressive actually with massed cavalry and what not. Just about to finish watching Hornblower, similar cheddar factor and over dramatic but again pre CGI and AI, some effects and production values and just all round entertaining. Also impressive to notice some of the minor cast members go on to become major actors today. Have often said to no one in particular that it’s a shame that there was never a cross over between the two, with Sharpe and his handful of merry men assisting Hornblower on some secret mission 😀

When I first started using 4oD (so even that is old-school) I was able to watch the entirety of Hill Street Blues - not sure how much it stands up (I think it tackled plenty of 'issues' perfectly well) & it declined later on but you can clearly see its influence on all sorts that came after. I also enjoyed GBH which was a 90s political comedy with Robert Lindsay and Michael Palin set in a nameless northern city that's very clearly Manchester. As for Miami Vice I get my experience of that from GTA Vice City which I guess itself is old-school, being older now than the 1986 setting was at the time it came out in 2002.

As uncool as it is I rewatched ‘Maggie’ from ‘81 I think. Was a cloudy memory from being a kid, so I looked it up on YT just for a couple of mins but ended up watching ep 1…then 2 then a couple of episodes a day. I think I watched it because it was nice to watch an actual family live and eat together, have actual regard for each other, respect and recognise others and sacrifice for the benefit of someones happiness or peace of mind. It was also interesting being reminded that some kind of behaviour rules existed, sometimes claustrophobic and stifling but that actually gave people firm foundations to live and even to push back from. It was probably somewhat groundbreaking at the time but utterly tame by todays standards. The living, eating, reading, watching tv and listening to radio together whilst eating whatever cheap stuff was scraped from the fridge was very refreshing. The grimness and mind numbing boredom of daily life somehow also made todays craziness seem a bit better.
