Boss doesn't care, and the boss insists that he drive some more. Driver has bills to pay, and his wages doing 60 aren't even close to keeping him solvent. Same story as ever for this sort of thing. Dollars and cents and employers that have safety and workers conditions at the bottom of their list.
View on Reddit #80087853

derpmcturd@reddit

This is multiple days of 2-4 hours of sleep. The lack of sleep adds up. Eventually, when things around you are at their calmest, sleep will creep in. Its inevitable without drugs.
View on Reddit #80078045

diandays@reddit

Depends on the person. Ever since I was a kid I sleep 3 hours a night or so for about 2 weeks straight and then I have one day where I sleep for about 12 hours or so and then it resets all over again.
View on Reddit #80081679

Summersong2262@reddit

That's pretty freakish. And I would seriously doubt you're operating at 100% with so little. Sleep debt isn't like cash debt. You can't pay if off in one go, no more than you can make up for an engine lacking oil by filling it up later.
View on Reddit #80087795

Its how my body works and has worked for as long as I can remember. The only time I sleep more is when I get sick and I'm always at 100%
View on Reddit #80096976

Meatbuns66@reddit

I think science says without proper sleep you are literally shortening your lifespan. Whats proper per person has variation, but 3 hours is outside that range. Id see a doctor if i was you, get bloodwork done etc.

Keep it on record) "hey, I'm so tired I'm pulling over for a nap" And guess what? I pulled over for a nap. Woke up like three hours later and made it home. Ez. Fuck em if they tell you otherwise.

View on Reddit #80143280

RealBigDicTator@reddit

Gurney Trucking in St. George, Utah had a driver call and tell the dispatcher he wasn't feeling well and needed to sleep. She told him he needed to keep going. He ended up passing out, crossing the median and killing a college girl traveling the other way. But the most surprising thing about this incident is that they let her keep her job, and a couple years later I was in a similar situation and she actually tried saying the same shit to me. It doesn't matter how nice someone is to you the other 99% of the time, listening to them even once can end in disaster.
View on Reddit #80083721

cyrax99@reddit

That is a horrible story, but also serves as a reminder to drivers that YOU ARE THE CAPTAIN OF THE SHIP. You are INFORMING them that you are too tired to continue and not capable of operating your vehicle in a safe manner. You are letting them know that it is time to shut down, and you will be doing so, not asking for permission. What is the worst they can do? Fire you? Would you rather be dead or have to find a new job? Hell, you might actually kill someone, your job will be the least of your concerns at that point. Do not let any company bully you around. Driving these vehicles is a huge responsibility, you don't take chances. That story of yours is sad, and tragic. We can't change what happened there, but it can be a lesson for drivers to remember. You are always the final say in the matter, and don't let any stupid company intimidate you into believing otherwise.

View on Reddit #80084818

No-Damage-9737@reddit

I have so little trust in my company from watching them screw over drivers (jbhunt) that I actually never answer the phone from them anymore. They are perfectly fine to text me my loads and everything else they need, I've learned they only call to harass me or ask me to do something I won't want to do (work on day off/ take extra load/ goto the city) and by harass I'm not exaggerating, they started a new thing last week calling drivers WHILE they drive because the trucks alert them if we go over 55 in the rain or snow

Yep. Usually if the redbull won't help me push through I just pull over and take a 15 min nap and then keep it going. It may not sound like much but that 15 min nap does wonders for fatigue lol
View on Reddit #80079478

Mahadragon@reddit

I have lots of strategies for staying awake while driving. Carrot cake. The one with the frosting, you know why? It's what they give diabetics. The frosting pushes your glucose levels up. If not, mint candies (Brachs) or mint chewing gum works wonders. Coffee is hit or miss, sometimes it doesn't work. The Filet O Fish with fries? That shit has so much sugar. I don't know where the sugar is in there, whether it's in the bun or the sauce or what. One time I ate it at night it pushed my sugar levels so high I couldn't sleep that night. I remember any food that does this so I can use it in the future to stay awake. Dragon fruit juice does this too, I get it at Costco.

“There’s no such thing as a late load. When it’s in the ditch upside down, then it’s late. Really late.” - my brother in law circa 1990 teaching me how to drive and his way of explaining to me to take the fkn nap when you need it and not gaf what dispatch or logistics says. I adhere to this principle to this day.

I sent a text to my dispatch once and told them I was too tired and needed to sleep. They told me to just text or call when I was rolling again. No issues at all. Easier to explain why a load is late instead of why it's upside down in the median.
View on Reddit #80078584

truckeredditor@reddit

The insane amount of crap they'd have to deal with if they pushed you and you caused an accident or worse, killed someone, just isn't worth it at all. Everything has GPS, it's not like the days of phone banks at truck stops where you had to call everyone to reach anyone. They can easily reschedule or notify receivers of a delay if there is one. Many times your appointment you're told isn't that solid and has a lot of flexibility.
