+p means more powder, so a more spicy round. Usually your owner's manual will state if you should or should not shoot +p rounds. Sometimes it doesn't say anything regarding it. But shooting +p will inherently put more wear/tear on your gun, just due to the fact there's more energy in play.
It's also a sort of conundrum when you're deciding on +p or not for smaller carry guns since using +p out of a shorter barrel means you're "recouping" some lost velocity, but the recoil is going to be harder to control. Shoot whatever ammo you're comfortable with.
