12 is still a good price for a 50, the seals are fine the hinges on the lids are just annoying. I'd buy these over surplus cans for 50% more that are covered in dents and rust

Many times the indentation on the seal from the lower portion of the can runs to the very edge of the seal. I've had some that leaked. The orange indicating desiccant looks like new after a year in can with a good seal versus nearly black after less than 6 months in a can with a poor seal.

I have never handled a surplus one much less owned one so cannot comment on them. I have had leaks with new cans that are made in China an Vietnam and go on sale at various stores for $10. The only stores I have purchased these from are Rural King and Harbor Freight. They appear identical other than the paint and they have the same issues with the seals and bowing out of the bottom portion of the ammo cans. The quality varies with each shipment they receive. I go through much of their stock to find a few that I think may actually seal properly. During some sales I have examined 30 or more and passed on all of them. I have returned about 6 over the years that did not seal. I have never looked at the 50 cal can at Tractor Supply but will next time I see them on sale there.
At first I tested them by using heavy rocks to submerge them in a 5 gallon bucket of water. That is a bit of work and I am not going to do that outside in the winter so a few weeks ago I tested some by putting about 1/4 inch of water inside them and then tipped them upside down. Water leaked out right away. Some of my ammo will be stored for a long time before I or someone else uses it so I want it sealed and I don't want to have to restore the desiccant frequently. Some I knew leaked when the desiccant starting changing color after a few weeks. I confirmed they leaked by testing if they would even hold water.

My only argument for the plastic one is if you plan on taking them anywhere they don't ding and scratch anything they're nearby. Got a shit ton of scratches in the trunk area of my car from transporting a few metal ones.

The seal in the plastic can is a dust seal. It does not provide an air tight or water tight seal. The plastic cans flex too much. I carry ammo to the range in some plastic 30 cal cans but don't use them for long term storage.

Just picked up 5 of them they are my go to for long term storage. Put a desiccant packet in them and ammo will be good stored loose in a cool dry place for year on years

I grabbed a couple more yesterday. They're all marked with M2A1 on one side... but some had a "24" above and others "25". The one on the product page says "14". Assuming this is the production year? Any ideas? Had never noticed it before.
