Do guys refuse to use an umbrella because it's effeminate? Is that an actual thing?

Seems silly to me. I see quite a few getting soaked when a simple umbrella would solve the problem.

No, we just left it somewhere. Again.

Hah! Yes. Sometimes in a public bin after the wind wrecked it.

Not a thing.

No, I refuse to use one because I then have to carry it around. Umbrellas are like suitcases. Great when you need them, a burden when you don't.
View on Reddit #80036258

Why don't you put the umbrella in the suitcase?

I don't carry an umbrella because I've lost every single one I've owned

I use a large golf style umbrella which has two separate sections so that wind cannot rip it to pieces. I also have a cord which is wrapped around the handle so that I can attach it to my hand when I am in shops etc so that I tie it to my hand so that I don't leave it anywhere. I have had it for more than a decade.

Because umbrellas are so useless imo. They always fuck up and they’re so awkward to carry, especially if you have bags also.

I'm genuinely mystified by this thread. I've been using an umbrella for forty years. I've used them in the City, at the coast and walking on moors. If it's windy, you just angle it slightly towards the wind. It's fine. It's not useless, it keeps the rain off. Have people just forgotten how to use an umbrella?

It’s because they are fucking useless

I could be typing this under an umbrella keeping myself and my phone dry. If it's windy though, that's a different story

If one hand is holding your phone and one hand is typing the comment, what is holding the umbrella?

I think I've lost every umbrella I've ever owned. Usually left in pubs, restaurants or on buses. It's not really worth the hassle of an umbrella. Just get wet, innit.
View on Reddit #80038832

prustage@reddit

Nothing to do with whether it is "effeminate" or not, umbrellas are just a pain to carry around on the offchance it might rain. A waterproof coat with hood offers better protection, keeps both hands free and doesnt get accidentally lost in the pub or on the bus.
View on Reddit #80038355

baeworth@reddit

No it’s because they’re impractical in crowds and if it’s slightly windy
View on Reddit #80036214

thebeast_96@reddit

Umbrellas which don't cost £5 are much better at handling the wind
View on Reddit #80038167

Fine_Analyst_4408@reddit

I'm a woman and I don't bother with an umbrella because I don't care about rain and it's usually too windy for them. The amount of people I see having to fight their umbrellas is way higher than the amount I see actually being able to use them and honestly, they're quite a menace.

6ft 5 I end up carrying umbrellas for others but when I’m on my own I can’t be arsed carrying one so I’ll just wear a cap lol

TheMarvelMunchkin@reddit

Umbrellas in most of the UK are useless - it’s always windy, so they turn inside out, plus half the time the rain falls at a 45 degree angle Plus most of the time is cold enough that you have a jacket

A guy once said that to me
View on Reddit #80036243

That_Organization901@reddit

That guy is an idiot, as are all people who make sweeping statements like this. They clearly have an ego like a partially damaged egg. Nothing is inherently anything and if someone thinks that, they are saying far more about their fragile state than any inanimate object ever could. Worrying about your masculinity as a man seems to only concern men themselves. If carrying an umbrella means he’s perceived to be effeminate then it’s in the eyes of men only. If that’s a concern to him then he’s far more concerned about what men think than women or kids think. What a sad little life.

Was once walking with an acquaintance. It started to rain. We both got wet. Afterwards realised that we both had one of those little umbrellas in our bags, but abstained from using it. I (f) decided against it because 'it was uncool'. My acquaintance (m) because 'he didn't want his umbrella to get wet'. Years later you'd think I've matured but no. I'll still only use an umbrella if it's really pouring it down. It's just so terribly uncool. 🤦

Sea-Situation7495@reddit

I'd rather wear a good quality coat. As my daughter said to me "We're not an umbrella family are we?" I find them annoying. It's always too windy, I find it annoying holding an umbrella at an unlikely angle so it keeps me dry, and doesn't turn inside out or blown away. Gimme a decent coat, and waterproof trousers if it's bad.
View on Reddit #80037194

PsychologicalRun1911@reddit

I think in general us men just don't carry things on us and don't want to. I think it's more attached to that than it is masculine/feminine dynamic. Women carry lots of things on them. They are prepared for anything. It's just very different approaches.
View on Reddit #80037060

ItGoesUpItGoesDown@reddit

Nope, just find them annoying to carrying around. They also don't work well in crowds or the high winds. The reason you see women using them more often than men isn't because men find them effeminate, its because women have a better reason to use one - long hair. Long hair is a bitch to dry and generally long hair gets styled and will be easily ruined by a bit of rain.
View on Reddit #80037005

Classic_Mammoth_9379@reddit

I find them annoying to carry around and most of time it’s raining heavily, it’s also windy so they don’t actually work very well to keep your body dry.

Honestly I just don’t care about the rain that much, used to use one years ago to keep my zoot dry when out on a walk though
View on Reddit #80036872

SeventySealsInASuit@reddit

I think its more just that they are very very impractical in the UK at least for preventing rain. Generally in the UK if its raining its also cold enough for a coat, and its pretty easy to just get a water proof coat. Its also too windy to practically use an umbrella a lot of the time. Some women probably do choose to put up with an umbrella for the effeminate aesthetic but using an umbrella is an aesthetic choice over a practical one.
View on Reddit #80036840

Bubbly_Possible9057@reddit

No. There are men's umbrellas which are massive enough to cover a family and sturdy enough to impale someone in a pinch. Personally, I use a rugged collapsible one which can fit into my man bag and has a waterproof holster. An English gentleman always carries one at this time of year. I can't speak for the Welsh, Irish and Scotch with their ripping gales, they may not be survive savage weather.
View on Reddit #80036660

Charming_Persimmon52@reddit

I don't use one because I haven't got enough hair for the rain to mess it up and I don't mind getting wet. Plus once I've got where I'm going I'd have to carry it around with me.
View on Reddit #80036652

No. I have used an umbrella. It’s probably a mixture of often a good working just as well or poor planning

as a +6' guy i just hate them for other reasons. Don't use one because a coat is more convenient.

You must live somewhere where it's not windy. Use an umbrella where I live, and it will be inside out in seconds. If it's raining here, it's nearly always also blowing a gale.

They just feel like too much of a faff most of the time. A ball ache to carry around or to put up and down if you’re going inside and back out a lot. A nightmare in crowds or on windy days.

It's not because it's effeminate. It's because they're unwieldy, tedious in wind, and occupy your hands. A hood is easier.

No. It's mostly because they are useless in the wind and a pain to carry around.
