What are the origins of this very 1970s/80s color scheme?
I think I had a jacket or vest, maybe even bed sheets, with these colors in the early 80s. How far back can you remember this and what was it used on?

One of the most influential figures of the time, Peter Max, an American artist known for his psychedelic and pop art, infused the art world with vibrant colors and free-form lines. His work, inspired by countercultural ideals, blurred the lines between art and fashion. Multicolor stripes soon became a visual code for self-expression, allowing people to wear a "canvas" that resonated with their values and sense of freedom. Max’s artistic impact, coupled with the global influence of The Beatles’ animated film Yellow Submarine, led to the mainstreaming of playful, curved lines and kaleidoscopic color combinations in fashion. By the late '60s and early '70s, clothing featuring bold, racing stripes and psychedelic influences became symbols of defiance against the subdued, monochrome styles of previous generations. "Stripes in the 1970s weren’t just patterns—they were a cultural statement, a colorful rebellion against conformity."

Isn't the origin just the fact that in the late 60s people started putting more color into their lives? I'm thinking of hippie culture/flower power bleeding over into the rest of society. BTW I just bought a new winter coat that has similar stripes. These stripes are very much available again.

I think the muted earth tones of the 70s were an evolution of the wilder psychedelic colors of the late 60s. New Wave design of the late 70s rejected the earth tones for blacks, whites, and bright saturated colors, and that style hit the mainstream around 1983/84 with [Chuck Woolery's Scrabble](https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scrabble.jpg), Miami Vice, and, of course, the big [Facts of Life retooling in 1985](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/a7/51/44/a75144c0a9d311f2f942345e6d5b7554.jpg), and peaked around 1987.

According to google… The 1970s color palette was heavily influenced by the hippie movement, a growing environmental consciousness, and a desire for warm, comforting, and natural tones in response to the social changes of the era. Key colors like avocado green, harvest gold, burnt orange, and earthy browns dominated, reflecting a connection to nature and a move away from the1960s' brighter, synthetic, and minimalist styles.

The 1970s dark blue, light blue, orange, and yellow stripes, often seen on sportswear, vehicles, and apparel, originated from a confluence of high-impact motorsports branding and a shift toward vibrant, optimistic, and "earthy" fashion trends. Key influences included the iconic Gulf Oil racing colors and 1970s "psychedelic" color palettes. Facebook Facebook +2 Key Origins and Influences: Gulf Oil Racing Colors (1960s-70s): The famous combination of light blue and orange (often with dark blue accents) originated in international racing, specifically associated with John Wyer’s Porsche and Ford GT40 teams starting around 1967–1968. "Ironman" Baja Racing (1970s): Brightly colored striped liveries, including variations of these colors, were popularized by Ivan "Ironman" Stewart and adopted by Toyota for off-road vehicles, according to discussions on Facebook. Automotive Trends (1969–1970s): Ford and Mercury introduced "Grabber" and "Competition" colors (including Competition Yellow, Grabber Blue, and Orange) in 1969-1970 to match the vibrant, psychedelic fashion of the era, notes HOT ROD Network. Fashion and Cultural Shifts: The colors reflected a shift from the late 60s' muted tones to warmer, self-expressive, and "earthy" shades like mustard yellow and burnt orange. These, combined with navy/light blue, became staples for 70s apparel, including sportswear and casual fashion, as described on www.myvintage.uk.
