Why would someone regularly leave their car running idle on the driveway?

Weird
firthy@reddit
I mean, he's leaving his car running for hours on end - it wouldn't be that weird to ask him. Seems a reasonable first interaction under the circumstances.
Splodge89@reddit
One of the old lads at work is very deaf and very forgetful. He often leaves his car running - he doesn’t notice the engine noise when he walks away.
We have considered stopping him driving… perhaps we should.
JeffSergeant@reddit
Ive had this with auto-stop. Pulled into a supermarket car park, my car stopped the engine, I got out and walked away, evidently forgetting to lock the doors, and by the time I came back out had started itself.
Th3H1Ghlander@reddit
My colleague had similar but parked her car at the station, took train to work, came back and it had been running all day because the keyless start had not stopped the car when she walked off with the keyless start. She only knew as when she was approaching the car the person who parked beside her said it had been running when she parked up next to it, just got back and was still running, she waited to see if anyone was coming for it.
JeffSergeant@reddit
Yes, I remember now, that car automatically locked when you walked away UNLESS it was in autostop mode. Which is why I didn't manually lock it.
PunctualZombie@reddit
I’ve heard the Megane’s slow pace really becomes a pain, and overtaking National Express coaches can become a long, drawn-out affair.
Few-Charity9072@reddit
Not my words PunctualZombie, the words of Top Gear magazine
JeffSergeant@reddit
Is this a bit from Alan Partridge? Or the inbetweeners?

Alan
Suspicious_Side_3160@reddit
Won't be long until the human race kills itself, dumbing down second by second. Just lock your car isn't that auto pilot? Just something you do. Next gen is fucked
JeffSergeant@reddit
Why would it be autopilot if the car locks itself? Why are you so concerned about be leaving my car unlocked over time 7 years ago?
Suspicious_Side_3160@reddit
If you get out of a car you lock it. It's very simple, can't rely on tech it goes wrong. I'm very unconcerned I'm just on Reddit lol, do you leave your house unlocked when you leave too? Same procedure
Th3H1Ghlander@reddit
It’s the first thing I did when I got my car, disabled the keyless entry and keyless push-button start.
JeffSergeant@reddit
I suppose I was wrong to assume this concerns you!
Th3H1Ghlander@reddit
Not sure, sounds possible :)
llufnam@reddit
“luckily it was a Waitrose.”
🤣
MarlieChanson@reddit
Imagine if it was Iceland
R4wden@reddit
I don't even want to think about if it was a farmfoods
Lynex_Lineker_Smith@reddit
I’m don’t think they have Waitrose in Iceland

Petition to open a Waitrose in Iceland.
Lynex_Lineker_Smith@reddit
It’s already crazy expensive there so, yeah why not
secondbrainuk@reddit
Weirdly though. They do have an Iceland in Reykjavik.
hunnbee@reddit
In Spain there's a chain of supermarket called overseas and it's a combination of Iceland and Waitrose. Like, it sells both brands. No one from outside of the UK can appreciate how unexpected that collab is
keef-keefson@reddit
Or B&M
warlord2000ad@reddit
This reminds me of a lady who came to the till in Lidl to ask if someone had handed in her handbag. After she left it in the trolley and walked around the shop. Sadly not, it was stolen.
But then, her partner turns up quickly, so I can only assume she still had her phone on her. As we leave the shop we see the partners car parked up, still running with the drivers door wide open.
Whilst we should live in a safe society the fact they both left their valuables unattended has lived with me since.
Automatic-Waltz6452@reddit
I left all my windows down for three hours doing a job at a Tesco, luckily it was in Windsor 🌝
thickwhiteduck@reddit
Good people who even return their trollies
terryufo@reddit
Loving the Waitrose line ;-)
oncledangereux@reddit
My sister says, “I love Sainsbury’s. It keeps the riff-raff out of Waitrose!” 😂
jose_elan@reddit
Same - the remote doesn’t lock the doors when the ignition is on. Now I watch for my mirrors folding in - if they don’t then something’s up.
WillBots@reddit
So you forgot to turn the engine off AND you forgot to lock the doors? Maybe you shouldn't be driving.
JeffSergeant@reddit
I wasn't driving, I was shopping.
Limp-Attitude-490@reddit
Why would an autostopped car then restart itself and continue running whilst stationary? That seems to defeat the objective of it. I thought they only restarted if you either engage gear and press on tbd accelerator?
JeffSergeant@reddit
They re-start after a while to preserve the battery I think.
skinpixel@reddit
My car beeps at me if the engine is running and I lock the car from the outside. Found out once or twice 😅
Programmer-Severe@reddit
I did this once around 10 years ago. Came back from my shop to find the car running. Most newer cars scream at you if you try and leave without killing the ignition, presumably to stop this happening!
kotlety1@reddit
So he doesn't lock the car either? I'm not sure if it's even legal to leave the car open with the keys inside
sihasihasi@reddit
Pretty sure it's not
Bigallround@reddit
Wait what? Is that actually a thing? Why?
sihasihasi@reddit
A child could get in and drive it away? Also, maybe nowadays, there may be a pollution aspect to it.
I may be incorrect, but I've always understood that it's technically illegal to leave an idling car unattended.
Bigallround@reddit
Does this still apply on your own property? Say in a garage or at the end of a long driveway as opposed to a driveway like the one pictured here. I can see why leaving it idling might be illegal, but I often leave my spare key in my glove box and my car doesn't lock because it's a piece of shit.
I've never been worried about anyone stealing it because it would be easier and more profitable to steal a snickers from the shop.
thehatteryone@reddit
Hope you live and park somewhere safe. Because someone rifling through your car and finding the spare key and taking off with your car (or even just the key, to take the car later, some time you know you left it locked) will void the insurance. Your car is being smart, not shit, by stopping you locking the car when a keyfob is inside, it's to stop you locking it with the keys inside by accident. That said, maybe it's a feature you or your dealer can disable.
Bigallround@reddit
Do you think I got a car this fucked from a dealer lol? I couldn't afford anything like that. I'm aware it voids my insurance but like I said, it's simply not worth stealing.
And yeah, I so live in a relatively safe place and I don't leave any valuables within the car to entice thieves. Nobody is looking at my car and seeing a payday. It's stored well out of sight at night and would be unlikely for someone to accidentally come across it.
thehatteryone@reddit
A dealer, or someone with the right equipment, can fiddle with a lot of hidden settings about how your car works. OBD2 programmers can be super cheap, but also manufacturers have made some settings more complex to fiddle with forcing mechanics into buying more expensive brand-specific systems. Worth googling any annoying "features" a car has to see if they're easily fixable this way.
Bigallround@reddit
The mechanism that's responsible for the door handle and lock has perished to the sands of time. I'm not going to fix it because I wouldn't put any money into this car unless it stops moving.
fothergillfuckup@reddit
I work on my own cars, and regularly have to leave them idling. Who knew.
Despondent-Kitten@reddit
I think on your own property and in your general supervision would be ok.
neilm1000@reddit
That's idling though, it's not illegal to leave it with the keys inside which was the original point.
sihasihasi@reddit
Hmm. Good point.
NaturalCollection488@reddit
It’s not lol (source just doing my theory).
Watchkeys@reddit
Why would that be illegal? Who does it pose a risk to?
Splodge89@reddit
I don’t know if it’s illegal, but you’re definitely not insured if you do leave the keys with the car unattended.
Funny_Maintenance973@reddit
Many cars have keyless start and auto locking when you walk away.
It isn't completely inconceivable that he believes it is off and auto locked
Public-Guidance-9560@reddit
This is my thoughts. The vehicle should beep at you if you remove the key from the vehicle whilst the ignition is still ON. But it won't turn the car off. My Rav4 and EV6 both emit a prolonged beep if you do this. Granted, some people simply won't understand why the car is making a noise at them, especially as (mine at least) will beep at you for maybe 5 seconds and then stop, and won't repeat.
Andreidum86@reddit
Imagine how glad he was when he found the car starts by itself when he came back to it and had the engine running and all warm. Must have read his mind ...
TheNorthernMunky@reddit
It’s a BMW. You can put the key in, start and stop the engine, remove the key and then, for a short time the engine can be started again. The key can also lock the doors when this happens.
Slierfox@reddit
Well just wait that dude can retire at 67 now you'll be into your 70s at least, so if you think he's bad wait till you get to that point and worse like we all will 🤣
kobrakaan@reddit
A deaf person would see the lights are left on (in this image) and smell the exhaust fumes and feel the vibration surely 🤷♂️🤦♂️
oportoman@reddit
This guy isn't deaf if he's doing it regularly each week 😂
DrHydeous@reddit
Hi, deaf person here!
No, I might not notice. I normally park my car under a street light so I would have to actively look to see if the headlights are on to notice. I wouldn't smell the exhaust fumes or notice the vibration when I get out, because it's a modern car that doesn't shake or emit fumes from the pits of hell like the old diesel I had 20 years ago.
Splodge89@reddit
He’s on another planet most of the time. The deafness is a convenient excuse to be honest lol
BadPunCentral@reddit
Hybrid car? Came in on batteries? Thought it was off and went in, engines starts up when battery low? Stop start system, park the car, everything is off, then the engine starts when they have left as they forgot to switch the car off?
Splodge89@reddit
It at all. Battered old fiesta lol. Gets away with it - not worth nicking anyway.
jesussays51@reddit
I do the same on my motorbike, especially if I have earplugs and music on. But you’d think he’d notice the lights!
Resident-Rise-8457@reddit
I think the reason y op finds it weird, is because op and everyone in this thread knows it’s none of their business. They aren’t paying for the fuel or any repairs if something happened to the car. It’s a personal item and has nothing to do with anyone, if it isn’t causing a disturbance, which I read no info about on this post. But, I would definitely still ask if I was curious 🤨
starbuckr89@reddit
Of course it affects them. The noise pollution of the engine running and the air pollution of the emissions.
Resident-Rise-8457@reddit
Lol those are minor things, that no one can do anything about. It’s like inhaling second hand ciggerette smoke 💨
starbuckr89@reddit
Disagree
Resident-Rise-8457@reddit
I’m sure if u call the cops on them, they wouldn’t say a thing
Big-Historian8918@reddit

It’d be more weird not to ask him! Maybe he’s hoping you ask him! Maybe he wants to be friends and this is an elaborate “in”!

Agreed. I've seen neighbours leave their headlights on, etc, and I've always told them. They're usually grateful.

TheIaughingMan@reddit
Is it actually on tho? My car has keyless entry and it always lights up as I’m walking around my house as I get within the massive zone it has. Very annoying
Eggtastico@reddit
Thought you can be fined these days for leaving a vehicle idle.
Artistic-Weekend3775@reddit
Are you sure the persons not sat in it? Weirdly in my neighbourhood we have two people who do exactly this and just sit there reading their phones for hours. Always assumed they were just getting some time to on their own.
Ok_Day_1805@reddit
My husband does this all the time. I asked him why and he said because he finds it peaceful and relaxing. I think it’s a waste of petrol but everyone to their own.
Weej87@reddit
Letting the car get to running temp, is very good for the engine b4 long journeys, but wastes some fuel.....so could be good or bad no1 knows lol
e17lond@reddit
Is he doing it to run out the petrol which he then claims at a higher rate from his company?
Teedubz1@reddit
With headlights on is wild
CaregiverOpen4517@reddit
Maybe just leave a note and the windscreen to remind the driver that idling vehicles is harmful to people and the environment, especially if it not for defrosting the windows in winter
j_the_inpaler@reddit
To get it stolen
coresme2000@reddit
In America we have remote start to pre condition climate before you get in the cars (but with door locks) on ICE cars. Maybe he went in to turn on the oven then got diverted.
ssastit14@reddit
Is he sat in it? Maybe he smokes in there
TheMonkeyFlu@reddit
Maybeee... His house runs on his car like a petrol generator? 🤣
Sir_Roger_Crumpet@reddit
My dad did that a few times before he was diagnosed with dementia.
MountainMuffin1980@reddit
That's fucking mad and even though boring to say, illegal now I think (having cars needlessly idle I mean). I'd just go and knock regardless of the time and be like "sorry I don't kow if your realised the cars been left on idling just wanted to let you know" politely. And then if it keeps happening start the long process of logging it and reporting it to the council. That shit is loud and annoying especially when you're trying to sleep.
Khaleesi1536@reddit
It annoys me enough that a newly passed neighbour starts his engine and then spends ages farting on with his phone every time he starts the car (it apparently hasn’t occurred to him to do the phone farting before starting the engine to leave). Hours on end is crazy work and multiple occasions something definitely needs to be said.
ewanm01-369@reddit
Oh no, that's so terrible for you.
Lumpy_Corner326@reddit
If something that small is annoying you, your life is pretty good tbf :-) think of it that way
TheShepherdKing@reddit
Is it an older car (built pre-1980) or an older man (built pre-1960)? If the former, it's legimitately important for longterm car health to warm up the engine before driving. Modern cars don't need more than 20 or 30 seconds warming up but for older ones, a few minutes is worthwhile. If he's old enough to have started driving when that was true, it might be force of habit. If it's more than a few minutes though, it's definitely pointless!
Muted_Mark9888@reddit
I do this with both my mx5 and is200. Mainly when it’s colder out. I start it and eat my breakfast, but I won’t leave it as long in the summer. But I always run my cars for a bit.
upov3r@reddit
Having started driving in cars from the 60’s and 70’s, this is a bit of a myth. Oil travels faster through and engine than you think, even when cold. The ideal is to turn on and take off but drive gently for the first 5/10 minutes while everything expands. Idling is bad for all cars
oiram12@reddit
That’s urban myth. You can let car warm up for 30 seconds to get the oil flowing, but that’s about it. Engine warms up best when driven.
Friendly-Handle-2073@reddit
You can literally tell from the photo that it's not! And even if he did have an old car once upon a time, you didn't leave them running for hours to warm them up!! Source : ME - I used to own a 1968 Ford Mexico during the 1990's. It needed 2/3 minutes to warm up.
highdon@reddit
It's an urban myrh. It's not healthy for any engine to idle cold, doesn't matter new or old. The safest way to warm up a car engine is to drive it gently until water and oil reaches the working temperature.
Thisisnotgoodforyou@reddit
There is plenty of debate about this but among car people wait for 30-60s then drive is the consensus.
BikesandCakes@reddit
False. A lot of older cars with chokes need to warm up enough before you can drive them or they don't run properly under power which is dangerous.
This_Suit8791@reddit
Not quite, older turbo cars need to warm up and warm down.
Evening-Tomatillo-47@reddit
Further to this constantly running it rich like this fouls up the spark plugs and gets petrol in the oil
MixerFistit@reddit
Idling is a terrible way to warm up an engine surely. Gentle driving for a few miles, absolutely yes but idling usually results in the engine turning over whilst cooler for longer than it otherwise would with a bit of load.
TheSwagBag@reddit
I often have to wait a minute minimum for my car to warm up (2016 plate), I sit anxiously waiting for the revs to drop to idle so I can pull away, but I always worry the neighbours think I'm being an arse haha
MyNameIsMrEdd@reddit
Just drive it.
thehatteryone@reddit
I'm not sure what you're waiting for - do you think the temperature gauge needs to read a certain level before it's safe to drive ? Modern engines and modern oils are fine to just turn the ignition and drive away.
mdh89@reddit
But why though? Oil circulates almost instantly and sitting with the engine running prolongs the amount of time the engine runs cold and oil remains thick. “Warming” it up by idling means the car is colder waaaaayyy longer than if you fire it up, wait a few seconds (2-10) then drive off nice and easy and not bouncing off the limiter.
Generally my diesel gets fired up, I put my belt on plug my phone in and set off, don’t take it about 2k until it’s warmed up, my old petrol was the same although thanks to the genius engineering of the EA888 engine, it was warmed up after less than 5 mins of driving.
AShadedBlobfish@reddit
Love the idea of the man being built lol
Khaleesi1536@reddit
No and no, can’t remember the year on the car but definitely less than 20 years old, as is the driver! Newly passed at 17 or 18. So no excuse!
originallyale@reddit
They probably got told it’s better for the engine to warm it up to a few minutes first. I know a lot of people like that! Especially car people, even if they drive a standard fiat 500 lol
jjjjaaaakkkkeee@reddit
Probably just been told by an older relative to let the car warm up. It's what I was told when I was younger by my parents and grandparents
NerdLevel18@reddit
Gotta connect the Bluetooth and get the tunes on, then let your mates know youre coming, then if youre mee accidents open reddit and get distracted
Minimum_Rice555@reddit
I think it's less the car and more about the "man". My grandpa kept driving modern cars like he learned to drive with the old carburettor 2 stroke cars back in the 50s -> long warmup, revving the bejeezus out of them, often shutting down after a slight kick to the gas pedal. These mattered in the old cars and frankly, no one told him these things are irrelevant.
FirmIndependent744@reddit
Revving up and cutting ignition still spinning is bad as the unburned fuel washes the oil off the bores.
FirmIndependent744@reddit
Actually modern cars with miniskirt pistons and thin low friction rings have more cold bore clearance than old cars, my Mum's Honda used to rattle when cold..running on full choke at idle also encourages bore wash.
General advice in owners manuals was to avoid racing the engine when cold but drive off without idling.
Questingcloset@reddit
Does that car really look like it's at least 46 year's old?
TheShepherdKing@reddit
I was clearly not talking about the car in the picture.
Wickpick@reddit
This is absolute tosh. Start it, drive it. Don't rag it from cold, just be gentle for first few miles if its something old or a bit fancy. Leaving it to idle for ages when you've just started it just means that's more time of the engine running with cold oil not doing its job properly. Best way to get it up to happy operating temp is gentle normal driving. Ive done this with all my cars, some with engines from the 1960s, as did my grandad with all sorts of racy/exotic stuff from 1950s/1960s. Idle for no longer than it takes you to close garage/gate/check your hair in the mirror whatever, then get on with it
artex-and-woodchip@reddit
It's not good for an old engine to run idle for long as long term damage can occur to the bores. A couple of minutes is fine, but for hours? No.
Best_Crow4371@reddit
That’s probably because he’s warming it up and setting his destination. Warming up for a few mins is ok especially when it’s freezing outside
Snoo_80554@reddit
Just saying, while yes newer cars (2010s and onwards) dont need more than 10 seconds to heat up the engine enough before putting load on them, people still advise just for longevity if your not in a rush to just let your car warm up past the 50°c before putting load on the engine.
Is it necessary? No Will it make your engine last longer? Yes, but not by a big difference.
DarkLordTofer@reddit
Very likely sorting the Bluetooth out.
DrHydeous@reddit
My car needs to be running before it will look for my phone, and it takes fucking ages to find my phone. Therefore if I want to listen to music while driving I have no choice but to sit around for a bit with the engine running until the devices deign to talk to each other.
Rawshark96@reddit
Honestly, no matter what year the car is, it's good to let the engine warm up before you start driving it. Maybe he's trying to take care of the new car he's possibly just bought?
Rawshark96@reddit
Never mind, ignore me. I'll own my mistake, and apparently, around 30 seconds to 1 minute is the optimal warm-up. Learn something new every day.
Vaniky@reddit
Some people believe that you need to let the engine warm up. Most modern cars don’t need to, but apparently turbo or super charged cars do, which is just as annoying as they’re the loudest (I have a neighbour with one).
anomalous_cowherd@reddit
It's more important with them to let them cool down, not stop after a hard run and turn everything off. Of course you shouldn't really be pushing your car hard anywhere near places that typically have housing either, but that's another issue...
axomoxia@reddit
Motorway Service stations for one (I live very close to both a motorway and dual carriageway as well), so the highly strung hand-grenade gets minute to let the oil on the turbo cool. It's usually where you've got a lot of heat in the turbo, switch the engine off, oil that's still in the turbo cooks if you don't let it reach a normal temperature.
Eastern_Idea_1621@reddit
He is cold
Noon_Specialist@reddit
How thin are your walls to hear a car idling?
elpea_@reddit
Not sure about you but I have windows in my bedroom I like to open that can let sound in
Noon_Specialist@reddit
Why would you have your windows open at night unless it's the height of summer?
Greedy-Mechanic-4932@reddit
Why not?
Noon_Specialist@reddit
That's like asking an atheist why God doesn't exist.
Greedy-Mechanic-4932@reddit
Not really.
You asked why OP would open their windows at night.
I give you - better sleeping conditions, fresh air, healthier, removal of odours.
What are you bringing to the table?
Noon_Specialist@reddit
How does it give you better sleeping conditions? All those other benefits can be received by doing it during the day. You're being nonsensical.
Fropoom@reddit
Besides the multiple studies that show sleeping with a window open provides more beneficial sleep, are you aware of the concept of personal preference?
Noon_Specialist@reddit
CO2 levels, particulate matter and noise, as well as temperature, all influence sleep quality. If your windows have trickle vents, CO2 isn't an issue; especially when you open your windows during the day. In fact, you'll find that in cities, opening your windows will introduce pollutants into your house; especially if you live near a major road. Temperature is subjective, and can easily be controlled by your heating, a fan, or air conditioning.
BiscottiHaunting6366@reddit
I feel like you’ve said the words ‘trickle vents’ more times than I’m comfortable with personally
I am also a night time window opener . And I’ve never even heard of a trickle vent
Noon_Specialist@reddit
Trickle vents are small vents built into window frames to allow a controlled flow of fresh air in. This improves air quality and reduces condensation, without the need to open the window. Most new windows come with them built in, and it's possible to retrofit them. It's still a good idea to open your windows for a short period during the day, but it negates the need to have your windows open all night.
Greedy-Mechanic-4932@reddit
Less than 5% of UK homes have air conditioning (source: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1019896/cooling-in-uk.pdf ). There's a pretty good chance that OP (or contributors to this post) doesn't have air conditioning.
Trickle vents are often inefficient at removing carbon dioxide, especially in modern homes (source: https://cambridgecarbonfootprint.org/balancing-energy-saving-and-ventilation/ )
One particular study, Effects of window opening on the bedroom environment and resulting sleep quality (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23744731.2021.1927177 ), summarised:
You argue fairly - as the previously quoted report, did - that "noise... influence(s) sleep quality" - and here we are debating the fact that a neighbour of OP is idling a vehicle overnight, which (needlessly, in this case) introduces noise to the environment.
So, I'll ask again: why wouldn't you want to sleep with an open window (assuming you don't have a vehicle idling at 1100rpm outside your bedroom window after midnight)?
Fropoom@reddit
Trickle vents are nowhere near as effective at reducing CO2 as opening a window and that’s ignoring the fact that half the population doesn’t even have them. Opening your window during the day will also have no effect on CO2 levels overnight. An hour after shutting it the levels will end up back in the 1000ppm+ range which are not good conditions for sleeping.
And yes let’s all turn on our air conditioning that the UK is so famously known for. But, again, are you familiar with personal preference?
Taimed@reddit
I reckon it's a slightly different question.
Noon_Specialist@reddit
Not really. Why practice opening windows at night instead of the day? Vs Why practice praying to someone who doesn't exist?
neilm1000@reddit
Because some people like a colder room.
Basic-Pangolin553@reddit
Ventilation. If there are 2 people sleeping in a room or if its a small room the moisture from breathing builds up and causes condensation which leads to mould. Also some people like a colder room.
Noon_Specialist@reddit
In the 4 houses I've lived in, I've never seen that. It's practically impossible in any house with trickle vents on the windows.
Basic-Pangolin553@reddit
Ok whatever you say
ExtensionWishbone53@reddit
To keep the air in your house fresh. It's not good for a person to live in a sealed container! Even in the depths of winter it's good for one to ventilate the house. Modern homes are double/triple glazed doors sealed, and no chimney as very few have open hearths/fireplaces. Is it a coincidence that most new double glazed frames, have ventilation built in?
Noon_Specialist@reddit
Open your windows during the day and have your windows trickle vents open all the time. It's that simple.
turdinthemirror@reddit
Why are you so bothered about other people's sleeping habits? I specifically open my windows wide when I go to bed. I like the cool air on my skin as I fall asleep.
Noon_Specialist@reddit
Why are you so bothered that I don't want my windows open at night? If you want to be cooler when you sleep then turn down your heating, use a fan, or use air conditioning.
RodneyRodnesson@reddit
Thats the point, you don't have to. Also the guy you're badgering can choose to open his windows at night if he wishes too.
I can't believe the concept of someone wanting to do something they want to do it would make anyone so insufferable but here we are.
elevashroom@reddit
Fresh air? I have my windows open all the time, all year. Maybe not much at night time, especially in the colder months, but I'm forever letting fresh air in
walking_chemist@reddit
I find it’s the low droning sound which makes its way through the walls then when the car is switched off I feel the sudden calm and my headache goes away
Despondent-Kitten@reddit
YES! I love that feeling!
Despondent-Kitten@reddit
You're kidding right?
I can hear a car idling in all the houses I've been in, through completely shut windows. I just have to be in the bedroom nearest to the road.
MountainMuffin1980@reddit
Hmm? Even with double glazing you can hear the low drone of certain vehicles idling and it can be annoying as fuck. Even louder if you have trickle vents open.
CarpetPedals@reddit
I believe its actually illegal just to leave the driver seat of a running car. Or something along those lines… but one of those things that is taken with a pinch of salt
MountainMuffin1980@reddit
Looking it up, it's illegal to idle your car, even if you're in it, on a public road. So on your drive it's legal.
BrieflyVerbose@reddit
Not illegal unless it's on a public road.
MountainMuffin1980@reddit
Ah yeah you're right. I guess it probably is only covered by nuisance laws in that case.
MidsummerMidnight@reddit
Found the jobsworth

I think I'd just pretend to be concerned, ring the doorbell and say something like "hello neighbour, sorry to disturb your evening, but I was just out for a walk and noticed your car's engine was still running. It must have been on for an hour now since I started my walk and returned - so I just came to give you a heads up about it, in case you hadn't noticed!"

I know a gent by me who does exactly this in his 10 year old BMW. Saw him driving it once too, looked like it was round the block, and that judging by his driving, probably doesn't have a license. See him sitting outside in it on his phone, probably big timing it and taking pictures of the BMW badge on his steering wheel.

I had to move my car for a delivery once during winter and my car was frozen solid. I drove it about 20 meters down a private road to a turning space whilst the van was parking up to unload a new sofa and left it running to thaw out. I went back and helped the guys unload. Once sofa was in the house I ended up setting up the sofa and one thing led to another forgetting all about my car.
Next day I couldn't find my car keys anywhere then it hit me, ran down to where I had left the car, it was still there, no longer running but warm inside. It had been idling for 24 hours until it ran out of fuel, and the entire tank of diesel was empty. I would have thought one of my neighbours might have clocked it but there you go.

Jeremys_Iron_@reddit

Best_Crow4371@reddit
A car insurance company won’t pay out out for negligence. So leaving your car unlocked or unlocked keys in it or unlocked and running will void your claim as you were negligent and didn’t take reasonable steps to secure the car.
PatchcordAdams@reddit
Mate had this £70k Range pinched. They used some remote key doohickey, but his wife left the spare key in the car in a bag. Because they couldn’t provide both keys to the insurance company they deemed it negligent and wouldn’t pay out.
Best_Crow4371@reddit
Sounds about right. Even though that key probably won’t work once it’s locked inside the car. In my Volvo if I leave one key in the car and lock it with the other one then the one inside the car is disabled and won’t work at all until the car is unlocked with the other key. If I was them I’d have bought another key from eBay and gave it to them. They won’t know it’s not from that car since once the thieves take the car they’ll program new keys and pull out parts of the car so making it unlikely or arguable that the original keys won’t function anymore.

They might be running the engine for the alternator to charge up the car battery. If cars are left too long without being driven, the battery goes flat and it costs £70 to swap in a new one. Learned that one the hard way when I first became a fully remote worker.

Doesn't really mean much, my sister does the same as her commute is about 10m every day to and from work. If you looked at the driveway as a gauge of how much it's being driven, it's not in the driveway 5 days out of 7 for about 11 hours at a time but those short commutes and being parked either at home/work most of the day don't do her battery any favours.

If this car was stolen, parked a street or two over with the keys then returned through the letter box, the police wouldn't get involved because there would clearly be no 'intent to permanently deprive'. If the owner never found the car and tried to claim, insurance wouldn't pay up since leaving the engine running counts as wilful abandonment.

Th3H1Ghlander@reddit
I had an old diesel and before I got rid of it it started to have an issue starting on very cold mornings because the glow plugs were dead but the mechanics couldn’t get them out of the block due to “Black Death” so if I needed to make sure it started in the morning I would have to get it good and hot around midnight to 1am just to have the residual heat be enough to start it in the morning. I would take it for a hard drive and blast it up the country roads and hills, but occasionally I would just have to idle it until it was up to temperature in the cold weather late at night before turning off. I am not saying that is what is happening here, but may be a similar rational.

I guess it's ok because he is on his drive way. But just checked anyway. it is illegal in the UK to leave your car engine running unnecessarily while stationary on a public road, known as "stationary idling". This violates Rule 123 of the Highway Code and regulations 98 and 107 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986. Offenders can face fines of £20 to £80. Key Details on Idling Laws: Public vs. Private Land: The law applies to public roads, not private driveways or private car parks. Unattended Vehicles: Leaving a car running and unattended is illegal. Exceptions: It is generally not illegal to keep the engine running while stuck in traffic or for diagnosing a fault. Penalties: If you refuse to turn off your engine when asked by an authorised person, you may be issued a fixed-penalty fine.

I don't think it is the case here as photo is not from the morning or winter, but our EV will turn the lights on if you from the mobile app asks it to precondition the cabin heating. It’s bad for the environment and you need to find out why it’s happening. This is what the RAC say.
Is it illegal to engine idle in a driveway? The legality of idling on a private driveway depends on its classification as a road.
The rules aren’t entirely clear. Annex 4 of The Highway Code states that references to ‘road’ “generally include footpaths, bridleways and cycle tracks, and many roadways and driveways on private land (including many car parks)”.
The best idea is to use common sense here: the authorities are unlikely to fine you if you leave your engine running for a few minutes to de-ice the car, but avoid excessive idling.

"why do you constantly leave your car running?"
Or is it once a week?
Public-Guidance-9560@reddit
I think you'd have to ask.
I reckon if its got Stop-Start that maybe he pulls into his drive and the engine goes off and if he's faffin about collecting up bags or phones or whatever, just forgets that he hasn't actually turned the car off. It doesn't help that modern stuff will leave the lights and everything on for you (so called "follow me home" feature) for a period of time after stopping.
The car should beep at you if you leave the thing on and disappear with the key (key-less go I am going to assume). But whether people actually pay attention to that or simply can't put 2 and 2 together when the car starts making a random beeping noise is another matter.
We're long past the days of needing "Turbo Timers" and I would think now even if a regen needed to be complete on the DPF, the vehicle ECU will handle that. It shouldn't get to your drive way doing one anyway.

I had a neighbour who did this and it was because he was smoking in his car to avoid smoking in the house, but it was cold and he didn't want to stand outside.
Eventually he ended up just sitting in there and scrolling on his phone too. I think he was avoiding his wife.

One of the amazing things about the UK is that talking to random strangers on the internet seems preferable to talking to your neighbours :).
earthgold@reddit
Is he definitely not in it? One of our neighbours sometimes sits in his car on the drive for hours to do calls. He puts the engine on presumably for aircon or something. Perhaps your neighbour is taking calls outside so as not to disturb the family. Perhaps he’s escaping the family…
itsok-thatswhatilike@reddit
Maybe he doesn’t use it, but leaves the engine to protect the life of the battery 🪫

Redditors at all other times: Guys I ate some jam that was 20 minutes past it's expiration date, I'm going to die aren't I? I'd go to the hospital but there's a spooky abandoned house next to it and what if there's a g-g-g-ghost?

I would literally just ask him.
Not for hours but I would leave my old car to "cool down" after a spirited drive before I got a turbo timer. This looks to modern for that and the length of time seems excessive. So not a clue.
OddPerspective9833@reddit
Quite a lot of people get home and sit in their car and play on their phone or listen to music for a while before going inside. I've done it and it seems most people I know have done it too.
There's a good chance that's all it is and they leave the car running because they don't want a battery
But I'm not thinking, "Why don't you ask him?" I'm thinking, "Why is OP so nosy?"

Only time I leave it running is in winter (shame auxilliry heaters aren't as common as the 'standheizung' in Germany) because we have a little kid and I am doing the nursery and school runs.
Having said that - I managed to keep my car running a couple of times when going to the shops. The reason is keyless entry ...
When I am in a rush and didn't press the off button properly and leave the car, the car will just keep running even if the key is not nearby (Mercedes). So yes, it's my own fault (and thank god car hasn't been stolen yet) but it happened only twice in like 6 years ... not every week.

shortercrust@reddit
One logical scenario is that there’s some problem with getting the thing started so they’re thinking “I’m not turning it off because I might not get it started again” They might not be able to get it sorted just at the moment - no money for the garage etc - but need to ensure they can still drive it.

Any moron who sits in their car with the engine running for more than a few minutes is an inconsiderate moron. Polluting for no good reason, making noise for no good reason, just turn it off, you massive twat.
dartiss@reddit
I used to live on the same road as an old man who'd come out and leave his can running for about half an hour before venturing out in it. He'd then rev it constantly whilst still on his drive before then disappearing up the road, stuck in first gear, with the engine screaming for him to change it. All of this, particularly early in the morning, was a nuisance and totally unnecessary.
One day he did he usual schtick of leaving it running and then revving it heavily. Suddenly there was a loud bang and the engine was silent.
For a while, it was blissful.
dartiss@reddit
I now live on the same road as a young lad - bit of a "boy racer" - who has a modified Golf (lowered suspension, big exhaust, etc.). It makes a hell of a noise even when idling. He leaves for work at 5:30am and often leaves it idling for a few minutes before heading off. All of which makes a hell of a racket.
He actually lives up the road but after a while of this his girlfriend had obviously had enough of the noise, so makes him park it further up the road. Opposite my house.

Is it a hybrid? If so they might be charging the battery. After buying a hybrid we learned that if it gets too cold and you haven't driven for a while, the battery just dies. If you leave it in drive mode while parked, it will charge the battery.
fursty_ferret@reddit
Some older people are under the misconception that if they don't drive their car for hours, the battery will go flat. I'd guess it might be this.

OneEmptyHead@reddit
The only “logical” solutions are battery issues as others have mentioned, or he’s using the A/C to dry out the cabin. You mentioned it’s a BMW so there’s a high chance he felt over confident in the recent flooding…
FatBloke4@reddit
I could understand this happening once or twice but not regularly.
I normally drive an EV which doesn't have a power switch and locks itself when I leave. When I have rented cars on business trips abroad, I have a couple of times parked up in a hotel car park and walked off, leaving the engine running, keys in the ignition, etc. But on both occasions, I realised my mistake after a few steps.
Leaving a car running like this invalidates the insurance. At some point, someone is going to steal this guy's car.
positivelittlecorner@reddit

As an aside, this is quite possibly illegal: Under the Road Vehicle Regulations 1986, specifically Regulation 98, this is an offence that can result in a £20 fixed penalty notice, which can rise to £40 or higher in certain areas, such as London.

I think there are two options.
I realise that they are not mutually exclusive.
The only possible reason that has any logic to me is that it is a diesel and he occasionally mis-fuels with petrol, comes home and let's the engine idle to avoid overheating but to clean the fuel mix. Note that option 2 weighs heavily on my mind at this point.
Cosmic1300@reddit
Maybe a dead battery with no charger
Breaking-Dad-@reddit
See option 2. The lights are still on and the engine is idling. It's an extremely inefficient way of charging the battery when driving it home would have had a better chance.
Zestyclose-Wasabi-91@reddit
Keyless and they’re sitting on the keycard? I used to do this with an old Megane. Had the key tucked in my wallet in a back pocket so basically did something every time I sat down. The car wasn’t running but would be open and lights would be on or flashing quite often
im-hippiemark@reddit
Does the OP own the white car and it's the neighbour trying to highlight that they have been blocked in by the poor parking?

Could be attempting to do a DPF regen, although it would be revving much higher than idle and wouldn’t be required once a week unless it has some other serious issues.

It used because thing back in the day to start your car and let it warm up so that it ran better when you set off and the heater got to work. Obviously that isn't an issue these days because are more reliable and the local scrotes will nick it.
The other is cars are so quiet you can't hear them running and I have got out of mine while it is still running on several occasions.

It's possible that it's one where you don't need to put a key in, and they are really forgetful and dim and don't realise they have left it running. I've seen it happen before. Don't press the button to stop the engine, just get out and walk away.
Jamziboy0@reddit
I had to do that for a while when I had a dead battery, then I bought a trickle charger, and then I bought a battery.
doctorgibson@reddit
That's mad. I'm assuming they've gone up to bed because only the bedroom light is on? Would they leave it running for the entire night?
I'm sure it must be on purpose, there's no way you wouldn't notice your car running when you exit it. Perhaps put a note through their door and highlight the huge risk they're taking? Thieves have taken cars that have been left unattended for less than a minute, never mind hours at a time
