What cardinal sins do people commit on game shows that rile you up?

My biggest bugbear is people who take the minus offer on The Chase. Totally unacceptable.

Not going for the 3 counter answer on Tipping Point. they'll go for 2 instead if it's a subject they are unsure about. FFS it's Tipping Point, not University Challenge.

But the calibre of Tipping Point contestants means they still get the 2 counter answer wrong.

Go on a quiz show when they are as thick as a whale omelette

People have done studies and published them online that show that the likelihood of winning the final chase rises DRAMATICALLY for each extra player you have (\~42% for 4 players, \~31% for 3 players, \~14% for two players and less than 10% for one player). Taking a minus offer can absolutely be a good decision. The money is all theoretical until you win the final chase. People saying that people shouldn't take the minus offer is the thing that riles me up.

WhiteDiamondK@reddit

It depends on the extra player and the remaining players though. On my episode, we won as a team of three and myself and one other player answered all but one of the questions and pushbacks. We beat the chaser comfortably so didn’t need the extra step enough, but had to split our jackpot 3 ways.

I can understand people taking the minus offer.  If they have more people in the end game, then there's a greater chance of the team winning.

Omnissiah40K@reddit

You're better off without people like that.

When I was on The Chase we had a weak link… he didn’t take the lower offer but didn’t bring much cash to the final chase and only answered on question in the final. If he hadn’t have been there I would have won about an additional £7k. We lost one woman who didn’t make it back, but I wasn’t upset as she didn’t know what day of the week it was and wouldn’t have bought anything to the table.

the kind of idiot who can't get on the endgame team without a handicap isn't going to be much help anyway think about how many times you've seen it where the one or two actually intelligent people answer 95%+ of the questions and the other two just stand there taking up space

They contribute one extra step even if they are completely useless and don't answer anything. That can absolutely be the difference between winning and losing.

The people who fake surprise at how well they did on the cash builder. So transparent.
View on Reddit #79961463

WhiteDiamondK@reddit

Honestly, I’ve been on The Chase, you are so caught up in the moment that you totally lose track of what’s happened so you are genuinely surprised. When I watched my episode back (almost a year after recording) I remembered almost none of the questions I had been asked and even was surprised I knew the answer to some questions…. Being in the spotlight playing for thousands of pounds makes your mind work very differently to sitting at home.

Stock-Magician1097@reddit

People who clearly know the answer but instead of saying the answer straight away they say " well it's not that one and it's not that one and it's definitely not that one" Just bloody say the answer.
View on Reddit #79955234

LazyEmu5073@reddit

They're told to by directors/producers, *especially* on a show which needs to be stretched out, like Millionaire.
View on Reddit #79955628

WhiteDiamondK@reddit

This is true. I’ve been on a few shows. If the show is running long, they can always edit out your long answer, if it’s running short, they can add extra in that was never recorded.

Stock-Magician1097@reddit

Using the ask the audience on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, but after they've shared a bunch of insight into the answers. E.g. "I don't know but my gut feeling is saying I should go for B" Surprise surprise, the lifeline comes back with an overwhelming B because anyone in the audience who didn't know the answer is now going along with you
View on Reddit #79956902

mattjimf@reddit

Or discussing the options and saying between two, then using the 50/50 which results in the two options being the two your between. Keep your trap shut use the 50/50, then explain.

View on Reddit #79953667

Alavonica@reddit

That, and answering the question before it’s revealed. “Yeah, all day long” “it’s gotta be ‘X’”
View on Reddit #80004323

AlertWorldliness2238@reddit

Or worse, the contestant using it as an excuse for not knowing the answer. Most history based questions are before people’s time. It’s not an excuse to not know it so it shouldn’t be for pop or film
View on Reddit #79954228

larneymel@reddit

Pointless used to handle this really well, Xander and Richard Osman panto booing them with the audience if they dared utter the phrase “it’s before my time…”
View on Reddit #79955797

Alavonica@reddit

Not using Ask The Audience as their first lifeline on Millionaire. It’s the weakest lifeline and is practically useless above £8,000. Get AtA out of the way early (or don’t use it at all once high-enough not to be able to trust the answers) 50:50 or Jeremy are the the next to use - depending on the subject matter for Jezza’s wheelhouse. Phone a friend for the high-value questions. Seeing people burn 50:50 or Jezza on £2K questions is surprisingly enraging.

I know it's not on anymore, but on Tenable when somebody uses a nominate when they have nothing right, or even just 1 or 2. If you're struggling at that point, using up all 3 nominates won't get you through, it just means your team has to play without the help and you still go to the vortex.
View on Reddit #80003093

mollyangel69@reddit

Not on anymore but people who used to split on Golden Balls. If you split, you can either win half of the money or none of the money. If you steal, you can either win all of the money or none of the money. Surely stealing is always the best option.

Passing on Mastermind. Just answer 'wibble'.
View on Reddit #79956339

Cymraes_77@reddit

Why? There isn't a penalty for passing. It would also eat into your time because if you get a question wrong he then gives you the correct answer.
View on Reddit #79958414

AdventurousMister@reddit

Passes as used as a tie breaker, so some slight penalty

People who on music quiz shows (like pop master or the hit list) but don’t know/refuse to listen to any music that was released after like 1982
View on Reddit #79962174

WhiteDiamondK@reddit

In team games, having a team of like-minded individuals is a grave error. If you have a team, a mix of ages, genders and people with different interests is the key. The same goes for pub quizzes. A team of old school friends early will win because you’re more likely to all have listened to the same music, watched the same TV/Movies and likely watch the same sports.
View on Reddit #79954434

Omnissiah40K@reddit

I agree with you, but a pub quiz is supposed to be fun. I don't want to spend 2 hours next to some old bat in the hope she's going to come through on a question about pre-war Britain and wont get a round in - even if that is meta.
View on Reddit #79954901

dospc@reddit

What if I told you... you can be friends (or at least friendly) with people who are older than you...
View on Reddit #79955162

Omnissiah40K@reddit

Sure if that diversity exists within your existing pub mates, drafting in people just for their expertise in certain fields just to win the pub quiz seems a bit OTT imo

View on Reddit #79962056

I often joke that somehow me and my father have ended up with general knowledge bases that don't overlap at all.  The Venn diagram is two circles. We'll absolutely smash a pub quiz and not know a single answer that the other one knows
View on Reddit #79956600

LJA0611@reddit

If they hardly get anything in the cash builder than a small minus isn’t that bad. It’s worse when people don’t take the lower offer (out of shame I assume) when there’s only a tiny difference between the two (eg 1k vs 3k)

True. I was thinking more like a multiple choice answer where they have a while to ponder it.
View on Reddit #79955048

People who waste the 50-50 on Millionaire when they already know the answer, therefore throwing away the most powerful lifeline in the game.
