Just leave a little note on the door asking the postie to knock on if you get mail. If not a Tupperware large enough to fit regular post in should suffice if not in a dodgy area. Standard procedure is to return mail until there is either a letterbox fitted or there is an arrangement in place to receive mail alternatively.

Occasionally but it's pretty rare. More likely to find a box you can't just take stuff out of though. That being said, one of my old customers has a washing basket in a bush about 100 yards from her house. Probably the strangest delivery point I've had.

Jacobs cracker box cable tied to the gate next to the original postbox. Cracker box had a note stating temporary post box as birds nesting in the other one. Or multi million pound mansion with a wheelie bin behind the gate, the wheelie bin lid had a lock on it and a hole cut in the side. They visited infrequently and it had substantial capacity. Or I had a customer that left their garage unlocked for parcels, I used to leave them next to the ferrari.

My parents live in a house where the front door doesn’t have a letterbox but the back door does. The regular postie knows, but the delivery drivers occasionally have meltdowns. Things have been posted through windows instead! Both doors also have doorbells, which is extra confusing for those inside as you have to send one person to each door. It’s not a big house, it’s just been arranged oddly.

The postman will malfunction. One day I saw one standing on the doormat outside somebody's door, spinning on the spot. Every few turns their hand would reach out with mail to the letterbox, but there was no letterbox, so they would repeatedly slam their hand off the door, straighten up again, then walk in circles on the doormat again.. After a couple of hours some Royal Mail maintenance men arrived and lifted the postman into the back of a truck.

It will be marked as "undeliverable" and will be returned to the local delivery office - they will attempt to deliver it again on the next day or shortly after. If you've a wooden door, it's not hard to fit a letter box. You will just need a letterbox, a drill and a jigsaw. Measure twice, cut once.
