I keep a lookout for sales/closeouts. All of my Redwing and Thorogood boots have cost $150 or less. I have yet to find top tier boots like Nick's or White's at those prices, but I'm not that fancy.

But what's the longevity of those cheaply made low to mid tier boots? Once you do the math, the better made boots, that can be resoled are a better value and don't need to be continually broken-in. Today's throwaway culture is ridiculous.

About a year or two. Which seems to be about how long people in this thread are reporting their resoles last.
I haven't had to break in a pair of boots in the $100-150 range in the last decade. They're good to go for a full day's wear or 10+ mile hike straight out of the box these days.

Hiking boots aren't full leather. They're a combination of leather, fabric, and insulation/padding.
I've had nice boots, really crappy boots, and a few in-between. The crappy, sub-$100, boots do suck. Mid tier (say...$100-200ish) are fine. Expensive boots, sure they're nicer but they aren't necessarily better than mid tier boots at just being a boot. They require more maintenance, and if you do damage the upper then not even close to cost effective.

Resoles run $70-$100. You can't get decent boots for that price. I can get a year or two out of a sole, (I alternate between two pairs). I also keep an eye out for deals and picked up a really nice pair of leather, waterproof Thorogoods hunting boots for half price. I'll easily get 5 years out of them with resoles.

I made the mistake of buying some $70 Walmart boots once after my other boots got drenched inside and out with hydraulic oil, they were fine for normal use just out and about while I broke them in but they only lasted a couple months if not less before the soles were absolutely trashed.

I have a pair of their motorcycle boots that have the same leather lower and sole. I picked them up for about $40, but you definitely get what you pay for. The stitching started to fray and the sole separated within a month of occasional wear while riding. I can't imagine using them for walking or hiking.
