If you drive a massive SUV, why?

Depends how you are built though doesn't it, I'm 6'3 but with short little legs and a long body I also struggle with shoulder room. Mind you I don't drive a suv but a big estate.

Because the larger vehicles cause exponentially more damage. A range rover is almost a ton more than something like a prius (which isn't all that small). And it's not a safety feature problem. That classic long Volvo estate was about the same weight as a prius is now.

They're far more common and, importantly, doing far less. The number of trips that take place on private cars they could be taken by other means or replaced by smaller cars is far more significant. HGVs (like busses) are doing the work that it would take multiple cars to do, and combine trips. One supermarket van will be doing significantly fewer miles per house than each house would do all driving to the same shop. It's more a case of you should demonstrate a need (probably just make it a license requirement to put people off rather than having actual paperwork) for a vehicle above a much lower water than the existing limit of 3.5 tons. Reducing it to 2 tons would go a significant way to reducing demand for large vehicles. This would need something like a 5 year grace period but would be a relatively easy way to drive down demand. If you need one for work it would be worth applying for a higher weight license. It wouldn't even necessarily need a practical test, just a quick theory test would probably be enough to put off people who only wanted larger vehicles for looks whilst not being overly onerous or causing significant delays in acquiring it for those that need it.

Not mixing with normal traffic on roads. Eg roads around the outside and weight/speed limited electric vehicles on separate infrastructure in the middle. Can also help with eg elderly independence for people who shouldn't be driving a car any more but could probably safely handle a weight and speed limited "golf" cart on appropriate infrastructure. But difficult to retrofit to existing towns in the UK and a bad idea on most normal roads.

The comparison to cars (excluding a lot of EVs which are also heavy) is immaterial. What matters is, how much of overall road wear/damage do they account for? Even if it's proportionally more than lighter cars, it's still a tiny percentage overall. Which means if you magically removed them from the roads, the condition of the roads and required level of maintenance to keep them in good condition basically wouldn't change. It's like saying that a Tesco meal deal is proportionately much more expensive than making sandwiches at home. It's true but if it's massively expensive rent and bills that is actually killing your finances then it doesn't really matter.

Some SUVs do serve a purpose for certain owners to be as big or spacious as they are. I won’t bullshit you though, it is a glamour thing mostly. I personally drive a hatchback though am considering getting a pickup truck for work stuff as it makes sense. I don’t see the issue with SUVs though as long as the driver is sensible.

The thing is mate a lot of SUVs and new Pick Ups are far more economic than they used to be. Any pick up made after 2016 is ULEZ compliant so actually not too bad for the environment. Ask yourself how many people are really going to be paying that fucking ULEZ charge every day in London just to own a boujie 4x4? No one. The argument against these big car owners is that your side of the fence thinks they look stupid and out of place. Which they do. My comment on fuel efficiency wasn't in reference to them, just an example of legislation limiting the types of car you can buy. (Also, while they are economic for their size, they're still generally worse than any smaller vehicle). I do think they're dumb. Part of why I think they're dumb is that they do damage roads more and take up more space both on and off the road (I drive down country roads to get to work and there are multiple spots where a large SUV cannot pass me, yet people that live in the area and presumably use these roads frequently still buy these cars. Makes no sense to me). But yeah as I say, it's very low down the list. But complaining about something mildly irritating is part of my national identity.

We all pay road tax, because funding for roads comes out of general taxation. VED is an emissions tax, and since bicycles don't have an exhaust pipe you don't need to pay VED if you own one. I hope that clears things up for you.

Some people think only about themselves. It feels better and more comfortable to drive, it fits more luggage, it increases their social status etc. And for some that's all that matters. They might be safer for the driver (though I hear they have a higher risk of rolling). And for some it matters more than the fact that SUVs increase chances of catastrophic injuries for pedestrians. I live in an area where there are a lot of very large SUVs and parking next to them is just terrible. Fortunately I am a slim person, otherwise half of the time I would not be able to get out of my car.

I need a bigger car because 5 months of the year I'm on constant camping trips or end up being the driver for the friend group on trips away. We needed the boot space for all the kids stuff and the rear facing car seat meant a normal sized human couldn’t sit in the passenger seat lol. That's the dual cab toyota/ford/VW things. Yes, a massive tax break, and yes those vehicles are far too big, far bigger than most SUVs. There was uproar when it was suggested it stop. There are few 'big' SUVs on UK roads - most are crossovers based on small/mid-size family cars. They weigh about the same as the hatchback/saloon equivalent as they tend to be taller, but shorter than the lower down equivalent.
