My brother “goes to seed” really easily. But then he merely looks at workout equipment and he’s built like a brick shithouse.
My other brother has to cut out booze and dairy and meat and workout on top of his already physical job.
Basically meaning “my brother bulks up really fast if he doesn’t watch his weight, but if he works out a little bit he also puts on a lot of muscle really fast.” Which is a contrast to “my other brother is very active all the time and can only put on weight and muscle mass with a lot of work.”
It certainly does not just apply to lawns. It applies to crops and herbs too, which was likely the origin of the phrase. Gardeners and farmers have to manage plants in various ways to delay them flowering and going to seed to maximize production.
Body types run in families. I had super skinny kids and had to buy special jeans for them. They’ve turned out average sized adults, like I did. Same trajectory.
Haha, fair. Then again, it’s not like siblings don’t turn out different.
And I do have one daughter who must have inherited some throwback genes because she’s shorter by far than anyone in either of our families.
Hahaha yeah genes are Wierd. My 11 year old is probably gonna be taller than me some day. She’s already over 5 foot and a few inches shorter than my wife.
My 16 has been taller than me since he was in 8th grade. I am 5'7" at best, he's 5'11". One time someone who didn't know us mentioned to my wife about his height and asked if his father was tall, my wife glanced at me and said yeah he didn't get it from his father... they looked awkwardly and said oh must have skipped a generation. 🤣
My maternal grandfather was around 6' as well as most of his brothers. My maternal grandmother had an aunt who was 6'2". Otherwise our family is around 5'4" to 5'8" at best. 🤷
I have two younger half brothers...one on Dad's side and one on Mom's side, so they aren't related to each other. 8 years apart. Both wore "husky" as pre-teens. When the younger one was 8, he was devastated that he had to wear husky sizes. He knew of my 16 year old half brother who was an all-conference high school athlete. I explained this other brother also wore husky size at the same age and it's totally normal as young boys are growing and haven't reached adult height yet. He was so relieved to know that it was a potential for him to have a major transformation in his teenage years.
For us husky girls, it was "pretty plus". I think we had to order that specifically from the catalog though, pretty sure it was just "plus" in the stores.
It really was the worst. And then having to the adult section at Penney’s because the girls wasn’t big enough anymore. No 11 year old want to shop Women’s.
That’s literally what my 11 year old son has to do. Men’s small. He’s not fat (wouldn’t care if he was), but he’s like 5’4 and 120lbs and built like a small man.
I also moved to adult clothing (women’s) around that age. My niece is doing the same at 12. For some of us it’s just how we’re built.
My son was a giant child. He outgrew boys clothes in third grade. He wore a 12-14 in kindergarten. The pediatrician predicted he would be over 7 ft tall but he somehow slowed down and is 6’3” now.
Ugh. It was the WORST. Too big and tall for the girls section, but not physically a woman yet, so the proportions weren’t right and you couldn’t “fill out” everything. I distinctly remember that being a problem with the dress that I wore to my 6th grade graduation. It was cute except for the fact that it had princess seams and I was just barely in a training bra at that point, so there was all this extra fabric in the bust.
And don’t even get me started on the fact that women’s jeans and pants weren’t widely available for anyone taller than 5’5” until we were well into our teens, so I had highwaters for the majority of my adolescence.
I remember bawling when I realized I couldn't even shop in the juniors section. Had to go straight to women's. The junior section had the most fun clothes, and I couldn't wear any of it. I still look longingly at that sectional a fully grown husky woman.
Honestly I was thinking about this the other day. My daughter is 4 and has a booty and thick lil thighs and therefore pants are a struggle. If I size up they’re like four inches too long for her and baggy in the waist, I didn’t know bigger sizes for thick kids disappeared until just recently
I was husky. Constantly reminded that my friend in the neighborhood wore the "slim" sizes and wouldn't it be nice to wear them too? F my mother for a literal life long eating disorder from feeding me formula I couldn't digest as an infant, giving me colic, and then leaving me to scream in my crib for hours (my head is flat at the back bc of it). Literally from the jump my relationship with food was fucked.
Congrats, you've just read a realization in real time. Unpacking trauma sucks but goddamn is it exhausting to carry around.
(Just trauma dumping into the void, don't mind me)
Flat back of the head gang! :( I was born premature which could have had something to do with it (in the hospital for a couple months after being born), but if my mom let me cry it out in my crib I wouldn’t be surprised.
I’ve never worn straight fit. I was also an early adopter of Jnco Jeans in the mid nineties. They don’t make them my current size and it makes me sad lol
Yeah, skinny jeans are the dumbest shit to be popular. I dont need paint-on pants. Trying to find jeans now a days is still a challenge. Just looking for a pair of jeans where the material doesnt hug my legs and I got some useful pockets.
My sensory processing issues mean that I actually enjoy the feeling of having fabric hugging my body. Unless it has a prickly texture. It has to have a smooth texture. Any prickly texture is just itchy. No bueno.
It has a soothing effect in my brain, much like being hugged or held. It probably doesn’t have any connection to the neglect that happened to me as an infant.
Yeah but with that store layout, I always got to go to the Craftsman tool section with my grandpa. He was a Craftsman guy thru and thru and wandering down the aisles looking at all the cool shit I don’t understand were some of my favorite memories. So yeah, I guess Sears cuts like a knife….but it feels so right.
Same. I remember going to the doctor when I was 10 and they said I was shorter than 90% of the kids my age and heavier than 90% of the kids my age.
Only pants that ever seemed to fit me as a kid were husky Bugle Boys.
Motherfucking Bugle Boys?!?! Did you have the corduroy ones too and your mom said the velvet would be “slimming”…and she was soooooo fucking wrong.🤦🏻♂️

I was a "husky" kid, although most people really just enjoyed reminding me that I was fat or kept asking me how much I ate. That was a really odd thing for them to do, in retrospect. Like, did you think the fact I was fat had somehow slipped my mind? That I wasn't aware? That I needed help in solving the mystery of why I looked and felt the way I did? How weird.
They were probably the same people who felt the need to tell me I had a big nose. My nose hit its growth spurt a couple of years earlier than everything else. And it was always adults saying it. I was in 5th grade when it started. What was I supposed to do with that imformation aside from feeling ashamed and ugly? I had no resources to fix it and probably only a disreputable plastic surgeon would have been willing to "fix" a 10 year oldest nose.
I've only heard this used by old pro wrestlers, and even then, it's been a little over a decade since I've heard it, but it seems to mean "not gassed* to the gills."
*AKA 'roided.
There is no husky section because it became the default. Both my kids were beanpoles and if it wasn't for adjustable elastic pants pulled to the limit, they would have been showing off enough ankle to make a Victorian blush.

"Hey, what do you know, I really AM big boned!"
I was big and tall, emphasis on the big but I was also tall. I just wore jogging pants for a while. When I first got jeans we had to go to a specialty store way out of the way, that was pre internet. I saw it for the wakeup call it was and got more active and before long I was buying my own Levis jeans at the mall.
Ladies do and did love that musky husk unit of a man in high school. The door to their heart is made of steel though. That type is not stupid, they just tend to choose to be quiet.
My boyfriend’s parents asked him if he wanted to play football when he was 14, because he was that type of big, stocky kid, but he said no because he didn’t want to mess up his knees. But, he ended up messing up his knees anyway by powerlifting in high school.
That was me! Corn fed middle American lineman. Pretty good athlete, stocky build, still work out and play sports in my 40’s (soccer, skiing), still husky
Yeah, it just evens out for those types. I knew I wasn’t just misremembering Friday Night Lights, I went to school in two different small towns in two different areas in the United States. There would always be an absolute unit of a stocky built man, you knew it wasn’t all fat because the man is just a tank, and he usually considered a star football player.
Athletic fat guys still exist. Ever seen a strongman competition? Also, that kid doesn’t look husky to me.
“Big bones” might not necessarily be a thing, but some people are just naturally big. My boyfriend was an almost 10 lb baby when he was born and he was a husky child growing up. He could’ve played football but he said he didn’t want to because he didn’t want to mess up his knees. So he took up powerlifting instead and ended up messing up his knees anyway. But, now he’s a big, bear-shaped man. When I first met him, I didn’t know he weighed as much as he did because of how he carries his weight and how it sits on his body. He’s been on a weight loss journey because, yeah, he is a bit overweight, but I told him to not get frustrated if he doesn’t get super slim, because he’s just built to be a big dude. I guess he never realized that before because I pointed out how wide his rib cage is and it kicked off a realization for him about his body. That’s why I hate the whole societal obsession with being slim and thin. Everyone’s bodies are different and some people are just built big. Instead of focusing on losing weight, we should be focusing on being healthy, because you can be big (or small) and still be perfectly healthy.
Yup, they still exist. My boyfriend is a big, bear-shaped man who is also athletic, despite being autistic and not really into sports. He could’ve played football in high school but he wasn’t really interested in it. He took up powerlifting instead.
My kids’ teams have never seemed to find one, but their travel baseball opponents around here seem to have a good supply of big, slow, fat dudes who will hit the ball onto the next field if you give them the right pitch. Don’t know if that’s “athletic” per se but they’re out there.
Fellow husky kid checking in lol.
I remember in HS, I worked at a department store in the kids department.
I've had this debate before, but i'll bring it up again. Chubby boys had the "husky" section. For girls it was called "pretty plus". I always found it interesting how much nicer they made chubby girls feel than boys.
That said, I've heard some people argue husky was actually the better term, because it sounded rugged or something.
Maybe if it was "Handsome Husky" and "Pretty Plus", I'd say they were even. But just husky? I hated it.
https://i.redd.it/ifelefltb3ng1.gif
Look, Ice Hockey for NES taught me that you're one of three types of people: a skinny guy, a medium guy, or a fat guy.
(...but your mom's so fat that Jupiter got caught in her orbit.)
I haven’t heard those terms in years. It used to be like a THING. You’d open up your issue of Seventeen or whatever and there’d be a quiz to figure out your body type. Either that or which fruit your body most resembled.
They still do. I took this last week.
https://preview.redd.it/pqmhq168x7ng1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fde59ba94ff23c6debf7c4e73cdded7ee4812f16
I'm am athletic fat, I think. I left the army in 2008 after 10 years of service, and today I am 220 lb, (100kg) and I can still do three pullups with two fingers on each hand.
I was the tallest and fattest girl in my grade until I lost 40 pounds one summer between 10th and 11th grade. Who knew being anxious about having a boyfriend would cause you not to eat…I also had two jobs the whole summer and mix that with adhd (that I was diagnosed with at 40) I forget to eat! But the rumors were hilarious because I was at the bottom of the totem pole in my class and having the attention was super uplifting for me. They said I was a coke head (I preferred Pepsi but whatever).
Growing up being a fat kid in the 80s and 90s was the worst. All my mom and grandparents did was berate me for it. Got shit on at school for it,got shit on at home for it. We'll, mom, who's fault is it I'm 7 years old and overweight ?
Target still has husky sizes for kids
https://preview.redd.it/kdf9fh8905ng1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5e481ae798ff64bada6e62adfeb0d465b64ce397
I always think of Chris Farley (RIP) as the archetype of "husky". Because a man with that level of strength and athleticism should never be called "fat".
My mom wouldn't let me buy wide leg pans like my skateboarder grungey brothers (I'm female), so one time I snuck a pair of "husky" boys jeans into the cart and she didn't notice. 🤣 That was a great day, and it was too late amen she noticed weeks later that I mysteriously had husky boy jeans. Hahahahah
I honestly hadn't thought about that in ages.
What is this tweet saying? There are a lot of boys at my kids’ schools who would have been designated as “husky” in the past.
7th and 8th grade football players are famously “husky.”
Sure, people don’t use that term anymore, but that doesn’t mean that body type ceased to exist.
Me and a buddy of mine were wiry in wrestling, in fact his nickname was “live wire” he wrestled 119 and I wrestled 125, there were a surprising amount of shorter stockier guys at those weights
I was pretty plus sized at Sears, size 12 1/2 instead of loosing my baby fat and becoming a respectable size 3 (I’m short 5/6 was for models) which was humiliating in the 6th & 7th grade. If new kids had any idea what used to be embarrassingly obese… How sublimely evil Boomer Aunts and Moms were about size, they would be in complete shock. My mother took ballet in college and went up to 125 during her pregnancy with me which I’m pretty sure is the crux of our relationship. Her preferred diet was 1 can of green beans a day. Fat was the worst thing you could be in my family, and now that I look at old photos and see what fat used to be (very rarely unhealthy) I think of all the pain caused for 5 extra pounds. I’ve tried to explain it to new kids watching old movies, but like cigarettes and gay jokes it’s just unbelievable that society seriously was like this and it’s not part of the bit.
My youngest (19) actually wore husky when he was younger. I haven't actually bought clothes for him, as I get yelled at, but, they did have it at least 6 years ago. I know, it's a long time, but, thats the last I had to buy clothes that weren't toddlers.
Walmart still sells “husky” clothing. Source: I accident bought my wiry, gangly bean pile of child a “husky” shirt and we could not figure out why it fit so differs from the other shirts I also bought in the exact same size. For girls though they day “plus.” So that’s an interesting distinction too.
Bodies are weird like that. I wore husky jeans in my early childhood until I hit puberty… I thinned out and was about 170 to 175 pounds in high school. Been wearing a size 34 ever since, with a brief departure to size 36 when my drinking got a little too out of hand. Quit that and I’m back in a size 34. But yeah I remember those husky jeans and being embarrassed to wear them….
I remember when my mom had to buy me jeans in the husky section.
I was 100% just an overweight 7th grader. One too many bowls of sugary cereal, no two ways about it. I wasn't like, crazy obese or anything, but it took me until like 10th grade before I was in a reasonable weight range for my height again...
This is how I see it..there were still plenty of fat ppl in the 80s they had a whole big and tall thing...Husky is in-between..a husky bastard will run you down and you won't expect it..fat bastard..not so much..I know i have been in both camps...husky is a warning bro..he's you plus 50 or so...that's not so fat that it matters..only that you wear above a 2x and 40 pant...ive also been told my whole life I have big bones but I'm 6"4" 330lbs. I absolutely have bigger bones than let's just say..anyone smaller than me..I just think its funny that we divide ourselves like stock on a shelf or rack.."oh wait I belong over here in this section."
OMG. I love you so much. I shopped the Husky section growing up. I said it at work once not to long ago and the younger ones through I was making it up; like they knew it was a “different time” but there is no way they called us “Husky”
Ohhh…this is getting shoved in some faces later tonight at work!
I’m a woman my dad always bought boys husky jeans for me then got mad when they no longer fit. I was 13 and a woman’s size 8. He didn’t even think to switch me to more adult sizes.
I was the super skinny kid. I was told I’d fill out eventually because that’s how my dad and uncle was. My 2 older brothers did, now they’re big guys. Me? I’m in my 40’s with skinny arms and legs and a Shrek gut.
As a girl I remember husky too. I was skinny growing up though. I also remember juniors. After you outgrew kids clothes but were still too small for teen clothes, there was juniors. I went straight to teens because not only was I skinny I was also tall.
So that’s what juniors meant! When I was a kid I thought it meant those were clothes for jr high.
I was much taller than your average girl so must have hit juniors sizes around 5th grade. By 7th I looked like a Bay Watch extra so no juniors for me.
My mom shopped for me in the husky section as a girl. I remember taking gymnastics and all the other little girls my age kept asking if I was an adult - I tried not to let it bother me but it so did. My mom didn’t do me any favors by fat shaming me and putting me in weight watchers when I was 10. It turned me into a sneaky eater. I always swore that I was big boned.
Anyway, I got healthy after figuring out all that unhealthy habit stuff and turns out, my frame is small. I wear a child’s size xl. I guess I wasn’t big boned after all.
I remember my parents taking my brother to Mervyns for his husky sized jean shorts circa 96. Dude is 37 now, 6’2, good looking, and super smart. Has incredibly low self esteem. I swear this is how it started.
I was one in high school, still am. I have been over 300 lbs most of my life. However, very healthy, and extremely active. During COVID, I a Dr. made me prove that at the time I was 325, my wife was there, it's no lie. He did not believe me.
I am one of the "Athletic Big Guys".
I didn't play sports, I was choir and theater. The Football coaches tried to get me to play, I just liked performing.
I wish someone would have told me that it was very rare for a guy that is 300 lbs and 6'3 to be able to move like I did. Oh, well. Wasn't meant to be.
This was kids who were fall for their age and probably 10 lbs overweight. They still exist but are considered skinny fat at worse and probably more or less normal now.
There's a husky kid down the street who plays with my son. He's not skinny. He's certainly not fat. You can tell he eats lots of processed food, but also works it off.
Always been a fat person. Truthfully if I had been born 40 years earlier I would have been a deathly skinny person.
I forget to eat, then when I do eat I have no ability to judge when I’m full. Thanks autism. I also hate taking time to make food, so I eat the most convenient food which is usually the stuff that makes you fat.
If I’d grown up in an “ingredient household” which were all households prior to the mid 80s or so I probably would eat one meal a day because I hate cooking for myself.
Now it's called Plus or Relax fit.
One thing I hate about girl clothes is how much narrower the tops are cut than the boys - when for the most part little kid bodies are the same boys or girls. Accidentally putting a girl who wore size 6 in girls into 2T boys shorts and realizing the 2T boys shorts were bigger than the 6 in girls.
Target is carrying husky sized clothes. I bought my son pants his size, the length is just long enough, but they fall off of him. He’s not slim either. 🫤
I was short and very skinny most of my life. Now I’m short and a bit overweight. Whenever we talk about my pant size I tell my wife I’m a “Boy’s Husky”
Omg I remember these kind of signs in stores. I’ll never forget that the husky jeans were even a different shade in blue jeans. Was an immediate that kid has husky jeans on!!!
