Worth selling my 9070xt and upgrading to a 5080?

I’m currently running an RX 9070 XT, but I’m considering selling it and moving to an RTX 5080, which seems to be going for around $1.8k–$2k AUD where I live. The thing is, I don’t play a huge variety of games. My main games are battlefield 6,Overwatch and Marvel Rivals. I might play a few other games occasionally, but those three are basically my main rotation.

Are you unhappy with the performance you are getting with the 9070xt? It should be able to handle any of those games pretty easily even at 4k. Unless you need the features of a 5080 for production tasks or something else specific then it's not really worth it unless you just have money to burn

Not unhappy just thought I'd future proof myself. Especially now that amd have dropped the ball on the FSR4 and I have money to burn 😅
DrBullah@reddit
I mean I am in a similar position as you. But a 5080 is more of a sidegrade. You're not getting a new generation's worth of performance.
You're better off waiting for a new gpu cycle refresh getting the newer amd flagship powered by udna or the 6080 for example if nvidia pull their shit together
CanisMajoris85@reddit
You want to future proof when the 5080 is absurdly expensive and not just wait 2-3 years when GPUs perhaps return to reasonable levels again?
Ivan23q@reddit (OP)
Keyword: perhaps. I honestly don't think they will..
CanisMajoris85@reddit
Everyone said this back in 2021-2022. In 3-4 years you absolutely will get better value GPUs and the 5080 will plummet in value. 5080 vs 9070xt price premium could drop from like 100% ($1200 USD vs $600 USD used) to 50% ($600 USD vs $400 USD).
pythonic_dude@reddit
While I agree that the OP shouldn't upgrade just to futureproof, I disagree here hard. In an optimistic scenario of the bubble popping and nvidia and amd begrudgingly going back to gamers, 9070xt resell value will drop hard.
CanisMajoris85@reddit
last year the 9070xt was going for like $650 while the RTX 5080 was $999 and the 5080 was overpriced to be honest given the 5070 Ti was $700-750.
5080 is about 30% faster than the RX 9070 XT, and it'll resell for a premium over that difference of course. So maybe like 60% premium, 70% tops. Not the 90-100% it is now.
If you think somehow that on ebay when a used RX 9070xt is regularly going for $400 that the RTX 5080 will be selling for like $800-1000, you're delusional.
pythonic_dude@reddit
I've not said a single thing about 5080, I've no idea whom are you talking to.
CanisMajoris85@reddit
You said you disagree hard and said 9070xt resale value will drop hard which is the opposite of what I stated. I said 5080 resale value will drop worse essentially.
5080 is already just trading at too high of a premium relative to the 9070xt, so it just has more to fall.

It’s your money so you do you, but that’s a monumental waste of money to swap for those titles. If you’re working with LLMs, sure, but gaming? And limited games by your own words? Waste of money, especially since those are titles I’d guess you’re playing at 1080p since they are competitive shooters.

I did a similar move with my rtx 4080. I bought the 4080 in nov 2022 day 1 launch for $1250 then sold it in may of 2025 for $1400.
Then i bought the 5090 for $2250.
$2250 - $1400 = $850 out of pocket for the 5090 i have today, good deal if you ask me
Ivan23q@reddit (OP)
Do you mean in AUD?? Because $1400 USD in 2025 for a 4080 is GTA heist levels of robbery.
kmkm2op@reddit
It's in usd, look at that 5090 price and launch 4080 price. Idk, how the commenter managed to pull off such a heist. I feel sorry for the person who bought it tbh.
CanisMajoris85@reddit
What idiot paid $1400 for a used 4080 in May 2025?
Sumeung-Gai@reddit
Bro just wants to buy something new... congrats on having money. Keep it up
9okm@reddit
Why?
Ivan23q@reddit (OP)
Because why not.
9okm@reddit
Waste
SiliconValue@reddit
Honestly for those games it probably isn’t worth it. A 9070 XT should already run Battlefield, Overwatch, and Marvel Rivals extremely well.
A 5080 would mostly just give you higher FPS numbers, but it’s unlikely to change the actual experience much unless you're pushing very high refresh at 4K.
Ivan23q@reddit (OP)
Yea fair enough
Shhh-it-Bruh@reddit
This is a personal decision. For me it's Yes because I'd want the upgrade in RT capabilities, possibly some PT and definitely DLSS. The improvement in those areas also may get you to try some other games u haven't. I have the 5070ti and I'm pretty happy with that and can't justify moving up a notch, unless I decided to sell it but not willing to deal with that right now.
