I saw Compulsion live several times, what a live show! Garrett Lee became superstar producer Jackknife Lee, the bass player Sid I got in touch with on social media, but I never discovered what happened to Joseph Mary, he was dynamite in those small venues. If you are just talking that era there are loads but if you are talking about hidden gems in the same genre I made [this playlist ](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/65pTF92JS4DkimsFsb8Toa?si=b5WEg8qFTGu1gx99vWx18w) for my kids which has some great lesser known britpop tracks in amongst the obvious ones. Work Lovelife Miscellaneous by David Devant and His Spirit Wife is definitely one album to check out if you haven't already. Echobelly are great still.

This is because they don’t want to be seen as a band that just plays a greatest hits set when they have upwards of 300 songs to choose from and are still releasing generally excellent new music. Not everyone likes the nostalgia circuit and in my experience of circa 30 James gigs they always throw in plenty singles or change their setlist on the fly if the crowd aren’t feeling it.

My favourite album from the time is probably “Back In Denim” by Denim even though it’s not really about that time and revels in retro with songs about the seventies (The Osmonds), US Hair Metal (American Rock) etc. Favourite Jam album is “Sound Affects” as it was the first of theirs I owned, bought on sale for £3.99 at the newsagents in Rayleigh train station. Next is the (mainly) singles collection “Snap” on cassette which I listened to almost non stop for a few months on my knock off (Aiwa) Walkman on bus rides to school and back.

Their versions of Black Sabbath's Paranoid and Soft Cell's Tainted Love (as used in the Martina Cole mini-series The Runaway) are awesome. Also lived the song Sony used in an ad (I Want You) for an in-car entertainment system. Possibly the first system to have a retrofit steering column control stalk. Of the 90s Guitar Bands, my favourites are: * Gomez * Reef * Kula Shaker * Manic Street Preachers All four scratch very different itches. For the first three, I'd recommend their debuts as a starting point. For the Manics, it's a bit more nuanced as there's substantial debate among Manics fandom as to their best, but I'm personally a huge fan of their 2nd album "Gold Against the Soul"

That's the big one you're missing, and probably the most critically lauded in retrospect However, I'm more concerned that you're putting Shed Seven and Dodgy in your list of best bands. Both were also-rans - products of the late 90s where any five guys with a guitar could get signed as the industry tried to mill britpop for all it was worth. Neither had anywhere NEAR the level of success or number of hits as the big ones (Blue, Oasis, Pulp)

Both had released charting singles before Oasis and were at the forefront of britpop, ok they didn’t have the same success as some of the more popular outfits but to call them also rans and products of the late 90’s is utter rubbish! I remember them! I got an A in my English GCSE (can't remember if it's was English lang or lit though) in May 1996 because of them! I had bought the single for Neighbourhood when it was first released in March 96 because I liked their first two singles, but according to Wikipedia it wasn't popular until it got re-released after the album came out. I literally wrote down the entire lyrics for the song for one of my GCSE answers. Thank god it didn't get popular until after the results had been published and/or whoever was marking the exams hadn't heard the song! 😬

The Boo Radleys Giant Steps NME album of the year 93 , more experimental and varied than your average Britpop , but chock full of great tunes , they became famous for wake up boo, which was a shame as it really was an outlier being so pop Teenage Fanclub Bandwagonesque from 91 is by far there best for me , stunning tunes with a little edge the later stuff is lacking the Fall albums from the early 90s are also much more accessible than most of their catalogue. Code selfish, extricate, Shiftwork all have elements of electronic dance whilst still being the fall , some of mark e Smiths finest lyrics as well

Skunk Anansie are amazing and so underrated. As well as Pulp and James which have been mentioned a lot I had the Cast and Lightning Seeds albums and played them a lot. The Beautiful South were also still making great music in the 90s, tho I think their earlier stuff is better. Later in the 90s you have Belle and Sebastian (tho Tigermilk, their best album, is from the 2000s) and Nitin. Sawnhey

Supergrass were unfairly pigeonholed by their first album being quite immature (because they made it when they were teenagers), but from In It For The Money onwards they were making interesting, reflective and musically diverse albums. A truly underrated band.

Kula Shaker. Horribly underrated, but singles like Tattva, Hush, Sound of Drums were undeniable. Lots of amazing deeper cuts too. Goodbye Tin Terriers and Avalonia are personal favourites. Still a great live band and a couple of solid albums in recent years.

Why do they need to be "from that era"? I'm serious. Don't knock older stuff. Oasis were basically the Beatles reborn - and I don't mean that in a bad way at all; I love both. I was on Gallagher Hill last Summer, in my bucket hat... New Order were groundbreaking. The Smiths changed music forever (despite Morrissey being a bit of a cunt). Stone Roses. Buzzcocks. Happy Mondays. Don't limit yourself to an era. And of course, the best musical talent in the universe, Mr. Frank Sidebottom.

1. Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci - really, from the albums Patio, made when they were mid-teens, through to around Spanish Dance Troupe, though especially Tatay, Bwyd Time (that album is strange and gorgeous - a fucking immense listen) and Barafundle. 2. Super Furry Animals - arguably, like Blur but even more, the most musically and creatively inventive and restless band of the whole era. 3. Mansun - Attack of the Grey Lantern through Six, but especially Attack of the 4. Supergrass (bit obvious - but here because their first and most famous album is the least of all their works; try In It For The Money, the self-titled, Life On Other Planets and even the downbeat Road To Rouen for awesome stuff.

Most of the great acts of that era have been mentioned, but the list looks strange without Portishead, Massive Attack and the Levellers. While Oasis borrowed most of their best tunes and the overall sound, and Damon and Brett (and perhaps even Jarvis) seemed to want to be David Bowie, Portishead sounded more as if someone had persuaded King Crimson to record a soul album.

P.S. Apologies for missing your PS question; Yep, Setting Sons. Mostly because of "Eton Rifles". TBH, the Jam's albums weren't great. I'm not quite sure why. They had some *amazing* singles, but I don't truly love any of their LPs, other than just compilation stuff. If you get what I mean? Even "Setting Suns" has a lot of weak-ass tracks; it's not something I often listen to. Whereas, "Going Underground" and "Town Called Malice" are a core part of my regular list, and never fail to excite me.
