If only pancake syrup is available, I will use it, but I prefer real maple syrup.

I'm cheap and my kid doesn't know the difference yet so I honestly have been getting the cheap maple flavored stuff.
View on Reddit #79697668

Maple with a touch of bourbon
View on Reddit #79697662

TsundereLoliDragon@reddit

Maple. The cheap stuff makes me nauseous.
View on Reddit #79696940

Junior_Ad_3301@reddit

I was once told that saying "I am nauseous" means you make other people sick and you *should* say "I'm nauseated" to convey what you actually mean. However, nobody gives a shit about that 'rule' but I can't help thinking of it every time i say it or i hear/read it. Just sharing my intrusive thought, no need to pay much attention.....

No I think that’s actually interesting. Looked it up and you’re correct.

How are you defining those terms? Most Americans would understand them to be the same thing.

Real maple syrup vs the dyed brown corn syrup stuff you get in diners. I sure hope most Americans wouldn't think these are the same.

As an Ohioan, I disagree. We take mapling seriously around here.

I eat my pancakes with honey
View on Reddit #79697618

We would tap our maples and make our own. We would go out every few days and grab 5 gallon buckets full of the sap and when we had enough, filter it and boil it down to syrup and put it in quart mason jars. We would also make birch syrup.
View on Reddit #79697616

Mindless_Log2009@reddit

Honey, if there's no maple there's no pancakes. But honey is okay too. Tho I'd prefer Belgian waffles with bacon cooked inside the batter. It's amazing.

Maple. Or some sort of jam. I only use corn syrup in my pecan pie

Real maple at home and most restaurants, but the rules are different at Waffle House.

We have maple syrup, I will get the B grade if I can find it, but it's almost always A grade in the stores here. But I also use agave nectar or local honey.

Maple syrup. I preferred pancake syrup until I was ~30, when I tried sugar-free pancake syrup for the first and only time. It was so nasty that I can't stomach any kind of pancake syrup anymore.

I'm used to the cheap stuff so that what I usually get. I like real maple syrup but I just don't use much for it to matter.
View on Reddit #79697511

Are you asking about real maple syrup? I saw an article that most people have never had real maple syrup even though they think they have. After seeing the article I realized I’ve never had it, I’ve only had the fake stuff, which is what I’m assuming you’re referring to as pancake syrup.
View on Reddit #79697003

no, pancake syrup is the syrup that doesn't even pretend to be maple syrup can you link the article? now I'm curious whether I've had maple syrup

Maple syrup. I grew up eating Aunt Jemima. Ms Buttersworth, and whatever other syrup my parents bought but, since I started having real maple syrup, I simply won't compromise with that cheap crap. I'd rather just eat something else if that's the only option.

Maple syrup is boiled and reduced sap from a maple tree. Pancake syrup is flavored corn syrup
View on Reddit #79697483

Yes, maple syrup is made from maple sap. Pancake syrup is usually dyed and flavored corn syrup. It sometimes has actual maple in it, but it doesn't have to.

I’m going to lose my cooking credentials for this, but I prefer pancake syrup on waffles and pancakes, especially the butter flavored syrups. Maple syrup is a great sweetener in certain recipes, but the texture is too thin to be a topping.

Cheap syrup (i.e. Mrs. Butterworth) only has maple flavoring, not actual maple syrup. Legally, it has to be labelled as "breakfast syrup" or "pancake syrup" rather than "maple syrup".

We make homemade buttermilk syrup which we also call sea foam syrup.

I haven't willingly eaten a pancake since I was a child 45+ years ago. If I'm going to do something with syrup though (cocktail, glaze for meat, dessert, etc.) it's going to be real maple syrup. I don't get the attraction of artificially-flavored corn syrup at all. But then again, I also don't like pancakes.

Neither, because I don't care for them, but if those are my only choices than maple is far better than whatever the imitation stuff is. I prefer tart fruit syrups or tart jellies/jams, honestly. Or just plain with butter.

Only actual maple syrup Like from a real tree. Have you read the ingredients on pancake syrup? Nasty stuff.
View on Reddit #79697264

Intelligent_Pop1173@reddit

Both. Real maple syrup is pretty expensive so if you’re at a diner or for example getting McDonald’s syrup with your hot cakes, you’re getting high fructose corn syrup with flavoring. A lot of people prefer this and actually don’t like real maple when they have it. They just want artificial sugar. I like real maple syrup myself but almost never do sweet breakfasts so it’s a negligible decision for me.

What is pancake syrup? Americans often have access to berry syrups and butter pecan, but the default is maple syrup. Again… what does pancake syrup consist of?
View on Reddit #79697196

sircastor@reddit

What is pancake syrup? Most people I would say put either make syrup or a maple-flavored syrup (Mrs Butterworths, Log Cabin). Is the latter what you mean? Beyond that, fruit syrups occasionally.

I wasn't aware there was a difference - is this a "real" vs "fake" maple syrup thing? If so, probably fake, because I'm poor and cheap and don't eat pancakes often enough to splurge.

Pancake syrup. Maple syrup is really expensive where I live and honestly it's a bit strong when I do get it. I buy this pancake syrup I really like, a butter pecan flavor, that's my favorite. It's fine if it's made with corn syrup. The taste is all that matters and I like the taste. I rarely eat anything that takes this syrup anyway.
