And dude I forgot how good it was. Mall culture was freakin peak and I miss it. Maybe I’ll become a mall walker. That’s all. That’s the post.

Visited a mall last week, as the movie theater entrance is in the mall (we were the only people in the theater…) Same mall smell. There were actually people shopping there in the middle of the week, it’s a somewhat affluent area. Apparently, teenagers hang out there in the evenings and weekends! Is nature healing?
View on Reddit #79690175

Still_Strawberry8134@reddit

Teenagers still got to have somewhere to go to escape their parents and walking the mall is only as expensive as you make it, so still a good teen hangout, much to the chagrin of the shop owners 🤣

It was fun. I would make it my goal to get at least one phone number from a cute girl every time I got dropped off there by my mom or by a friend's mom. We spent a lot of time in the arcade, the food court, Sam Goody or Camelot. I remember the clothes at Structure, the gadgets in Radio Shack, the Walden Bookstore, getting matching engraved bracelets at Things Remembered for whoever i had a crush on at the time. That was back when Chic Fil A was only in mall food courts. I actually ended up getting a job as a drive thru cashier at the first free-standing Chic Fil A when I turned 16 in the Houston suburbs. Anyway, there were tons of girls to flirt with, or whatever your vibe. I remember getting a bumper sticker that said "Whatever" and driving around with it for years.

View on Reddit #79732166

dreamyduskywing@reddit

I think parents were trying to escape us, too. When I was 14 or so, my friend’s mom would dump us off at the mall while she did other things. She’d pick us up a couple hours later. I never had more than $5 at any given time though, so I was maybe able to get an Orange Julius but nothing from the stores. No cell phones, of course, so we couldn’t call her to pick us up early either.
View on Reddit #79716651

Still_Strawberry8134@reddit

Oh for sure. I have no doubt my dad was thrilled to get the noisy teenagers out of his house for a few hours so he could pretend he was in charge for a while 🤣

View on Reddit #79715747

That’s just wild. I mean, private property, they can do whatever they want I guess. But I’m pretty sure that’s how you kill a mall here, lol
View on Reddit #79717632

Dont__Grumpy__Stop@reddit

They put an age limit at my mall. If you’re under 18 you need to be accompanied by an adult on Friday nights and weekends. They have security at the door checking. It’s tragic.
View on Reddit #79699378

ShortBrownAndUgly@reddit

I think there’s a new equilibrium as there were just too many malls is some areas. Many have now shut down so the remaining malls get more business. Anecdotally my teenage daughter would hang at the mall sometimes with her friends although they don’t go as often lately
View on Reddit #79692155

TargetApprehensive38@reddit

This is exactly what it is - there were just too many. My city’s metro area had 6 malls at the peak. Now there’s 3 and they all kind of have a niche. One is the classic mall with food court, the other two are open air with higher end stores. One of the higher end ones is normally pretty dead, but the other two are insanely busy.

View on Reddit #79774740

dreamyduskywing@reddit

I think about Mallrats often because I live near THE mall where the movie was filmed. I also used to go to that mall as a teen and it was dead at the time (which is why it was used in films—same mall used for Drop Dead Gorgeous). Now the Mallrats film location is quite nice. It’s super busy because they replaced the old Sears with a huge Scheel’s store. The other mall I went to in junior high is essentially dead and it should probably just be demolished at this point. It never recovered after the opening of the Mall of America.

There's a mall by me that is still doing surprisingly well. Obviously, Sears and a lot of those types of anchor stores are gone. There's a Best Buy and Target. Some stuff is vacant and there are a lot of small, weird stores now that are probably able to afford the lower rent with the lower demand for mall space but it's still pretty crowded. Seems like there's a lot of jewelry and women's clothes and shoes so maybe people still buy a lot of that in person? Makes sense, I suppose. Some knickknack and speciality stores.
View on Reddit #79731822

AndrewInMN@reddit

Certain malls never really stopped being busy. The narrative that they’re all dying got so pervasive that it seemed to surprise some people that there are malls that, at least in appearance, have continued to do okay.
View on Reddit #79692753

Lunar-Havoc@reddit

Most are dieing. But there are exceptions. There is a big one in my neighborhood that evolved with the times. It's all expensive shit people want to try on before they buy. Gucci, Versace, there is a Tesla and Polstar inside. And restaurants expensive ones Wolfgang Puck and a sports arcade with trampolines. stuff people go on dates too. They also have free charging stations so people go there to charge but end up shopping.
View on Reddit #79716902

AndrewInMN@reddit

It might depend on the area. I know in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area most of those malls seem to be doing okay, including the one Mallrats was filmed in. Though I was in one last fall that has higher end stores like you mentioned and it was super dead, though it could’ve just been the day of the week/time of day.

You'll be shocked how packed the mall still gets. I've tried several times but it's a let down at ours. Everything is gone except for the arcade, movie theater and food court. Basically all the stores are for women in ours now. Not a single place to buy music/movies (FYE) or toy store (KB Toys). There's still a GameStop where Babbages used to be though. Bourbon chicken still available in the food court.

Hot Topic showing up, in my baby-GenX eyes, was the beginning of the end. We went to the mall wearing Misfits or Slayer tshirts and old army pants on our skateboards because we were outcasts, goddammit, and the whole fake-ass system of the mall was a perfect backstop to our rebellion of society. Having a fake-ass store selling Misfits and Slayer shirts meant kids could just buy a look, then April Lavigne showed up and I was like ah fuck it, everything sucks and nothing is real anymore.

Back in the early 00s, I visited Eden Prairie Center in Minnesota, the mall where Mallrats was filmed. Unfortunately I no longer have the pictures, but it was really interesting. The mall was being renovated during the time I was there, so there were only a handful of relics remaining that showed it was the same mall. The elevator (which was glass, not white like portrayed in the movie - the production team must have covered the glass with white paper or something similar) and the sort of blue-green arches you can sometimes see in the film were about the only things left. However, there were a ton of construction guys walking around carrying beams and things over their shoulder, which was absolutely hilarious because that's a running visual gag in the movie. If the mall is even still open now, I doubt there's much left of it at all that would remind anyone of Mallrats.

I moved recently and hadn’t been to the mall because all of the ones in the last 2 cities I’ve lived in were dead/dying. Had to go there to return something a couple months ago and it’s a real, live, thriving mall. I was literally giddy walking through there.

My childhood mall is still there and frequented by the locals, but it doesn't look anything like it did. It used to have a late '70s vibe about it from when it was built, but now it's got this boring, early 2000s look. All the stores I loved are gone. Most of the food we ate there is gone. It's nothing like it was. I wont be going back.

I’ve been to the mall a handful of times recently. My step daughter is 16 and her and her besties have decided the mall is cool lol. Or whatever the 16 year old equivalent of cool is. Regardless of the store changes and layout renovations, the mall still very much feels like the mall in the late 90s early 00s. I’ve never been a giant mall girly, but the familiar energy that hits me in the face when I walk in the doors is oddly comforting.

I went to one over the winter, which is rare for me but I had a specific errand in mind. In the 80s/90s this mall had been a fairly big deal; it is now basically a growth on the side of the one anchor store, which is a monstrous Target. I think I saw a total of 8 people in the mall, including the two employees at the record store I was visiting and my own reflection in a window with a FOR LEASE sign on it (which is 95% of the storefronts)

I always wanted to be a mall rat but the mall was too far from my house. I was a comic book shop kid for a while though but that was just to play magic. Then that shop closed down

I still love the mall. I take my son there sometimes just to walk around on super cold or extra hot days. It’s a very zen place for me

My favorite Kevin Smith movie. Back in the day when I would go to the mall there was always this one guy there that had a black leather jacket with "mallrat" airbrushed on the back of it! I went to the local mall last week and it is so different. Fewer chain stores and more locally owned shops that close down around 5-6. It had a very different vibe.
