Today is digital Independence day!

Social media is one of the most valuable data points, that is collected about us, so it's time to fundamentally reject surveilance capitalism and switch to self-hostable, open source and decentralized social media.
That's exactly what the fediverse is. In the linked image, there is an overview of some of the networks out there, that are similar to platforms, you are already used to. If you want to learn more about how the fediverse works, look here.
The digital indepence day is all about taking small steps and trying to switch away one service at a time. You don't have to fully commit to the service, just try it out and see if you like it. The fediverse as a whole is constantly growing and especially the stuff you find on piefed / lemmy theese days is often really interresting. You will find some nieche communities if you look around a bit. If you wanna learn more about the digital independence day, look at di.day .
Modern_Doshin@reddit
I would say Lemmy has more traction going for replacing Reddit than Piefed (both good alts though)

Teamspeak poised to make a sick comeback
NetSage@reddit
Not at the rate they're going. Unless they remove the need to be in voice to text chat they're not even in the top 5.
urbanaut@reddit
Thanks for the PieFed suggestion, I'm so tired of Admins perma-banning and muting people when they misinterpret an innocent comment.

Happened to me today. Spent 6hrs proving my innocence.

Is there a Piefed app on the Google Play Store? I found Peertube there but not Piefed
Careful-Chicken-588@reddit (OP)
Piefed is just the server software, so there are many apps, you could use to browse piefed. Some examples include: Interstellar or Summit. I am currently using Jerbora, but that's only compatible with Lemmy, which is really similar to piefed.
The great thing about the fediverse is that all these platforms are compatible with each other, so it doesn't matter if you have an account on Lemmy or Piefed, because you will be able to follow the same communities (like subreddit) and interact with the same people.
If you wanna know a bit more about the fediverse, look here.

Hi. Is there something something similar for iOS. I searched the Apple store and couldn't find any alternative to Reddit.

hey founders we launched built in public. it is a founders and startups community platform where founders can share their ideas, products, their journey etc , so let's start
builtinpublic.xyz
7grims@reddit
the world needs a real competitor for youtube more then any other of those things
-----------------
and maybe a twitter replacer too, cause that shit is a cesspool of misinformation, but those idiots are fanatics anyway, they wont switch
1negroup@reddit
odysee.com is a real competitor is just that for some reason people do see its value
7grims@reddit
Had not visited in a long wile, good to see many youtubers are uploading their stuff there also, recognizing so many thumbs also.
Now we just need youtube to fuck up and make another controversy so people do a massive migration to it.
kamiloslav@reddit
Nebula is basically that It's not free however, but no app can be free, user friendly and sustainable at the same time
AceCasinova@reddit
Have they added a less clunky way to play another video? I love Nebula but I wish I could auto play a creator's next video
rorschach_blots@reddit
Bluesky and Threads are right there but both have there issues and somehow I never see content from the people I'm actually following.
kurttheflirt@reddit
Bluesky's second feed is only your followers posts in real time order. You can (as I and many others have) set it as your default feed.
StunningShifts@reddit
Thread maybe, but I have a feed on Bluesky that is only people I am following.
zeroblitzt@reddit
Threads is owned by Meta, switching off X to Threads does literally nothing for your digital independence
threevi@reddit
Mastodon is right there. It sucks that people's digital literacy is so low that they can't figure out something that's about as complex as making an email account.
Former-Speaker-5511@reddit
How is piefed different than lemmy? If I've already got a lemmy account in an instance is it the same thing?
rimu@reddit
This page does a comparison.
Careful-Chicken-588@reddit (OP)
Basically, it's just different software running on the server. You can still interact with piefed users and vice versa. Just look at some of the user handles on Lemmy, these days you will find quite a few people with @piefed.social
Former-Speaker-5511@reddit
Thanks! So no real reason to sign up at piefed if we've already got a lemmy?
Skavau@reddit
Piefed has a bunch of tools Lemmy doesn't have: Custom Feeds (public and private), Post scheduling, hashtags, post flairs, user flairs, polls, events, grouped posting (effectively crossposting), a much better community search.
kcsebby@reddit
Peertube and most of the similar YouTube replacements are just utterly terrible. Just see the LBRY -> Odysee pipeline.
SmileyBMM@reddit
Odysee at least has a decent player and some decent channels, Peertube and Rumble mostly just suck.
Jasperthewolf748@reddit
Do they really? Their decent in my experience
SmileyBMM@reddit
The mobile Rumble app is a trainwreck, though there are some good people on the platform. Peertube runs terribly, and has poor discoverability. Both do work with BravePipe, but that's a bandaid solution imo.
suspicious_hyperlink@reddit
Tbf they can’t just launch the equivalent to the world’s first mega popular streaming platform that took decades and billions to reach its current status.
kcsebby@reddit
That's not what I claimed, now is it?
Careful-Chicken-588@reddit (OP)
I agree, that it lacks some discoverability features, but the overall platform is solid I think. One creator, that makes peertube feel worth it to me is veronicaexplains@tinkerbetter.tube . Her videos are really good.
ananisikenadam35@reddit
Nobody is gonna use them.

I didn't know what PieFed was so I googled it and I still don't know what it is because the site doesn't respond and clicking the join link from Google goes to a 403 page.
-RedshiftLeft@reddit
The names all suck
p4pa_squat@reddit
are there any Peertube servers that aren't moobats like the majority of the fediverse?
SmileyBMM@reddit
Peertube is mostly dead. Rumble and Odysee have larger communities.
p4pa_squat@reddit
odysee is great.
i really liked the idea of peertub. i just looked at their code of conduct and i can see why its dead.
SmileyBMM@reddit
I've tried fediverse options multiple times and found they just aren't enjoyable to use. I personally find smaller independent platforms like r drama and Odysee significantly more fun.
