Yes, i know. The misspelling is to emphasize the ridiculousness.

better known as the skycrane, this thing was a beast. There was a civilian version, and both have been used for some seriously heavy lift projects. Between both versions, about a dozen are still flying and another dozen on display (such as this one, which I'm pretty sure is the one at Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson).

misterreeeeeee@reddit

theres a civilian one used for firefighting based at my local airport

Is it at Corvallis?

99% that’s the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, AZ.

That person was referring to a private sky crane used for fire fighting and I know that there used to be one based out of Corvallis Oregon.

I watched maybe the same one fighting a fire in central California. The fire wasn't close, but ithe helo was sucking up water from a pond near me.

I can remember the first time I went to Pima, they had this as their gate arch. You walked under it to enter the museum.

They come to my local airport in Oregon for practice every once in a while. Absolutely massive behemoth of a thing and to see two flying around at once is maddening. The sound the blades beat into the air can be felt in your chest from a 2/3rds of a mile away.

The Skycrane also just looks so good in bright red.

Fun note: Erickson Inc purchased the type certificate and rights to build Sky Cranes, and continues to build them to this day as far as I know.

I saw one in person for the first time in Long Beach, CA last month and positively geeked out. Such a beast!

Yep. They used one in my area a few months ago to install replacement HVAC units on one of the high rise condos in the area. Absolutely huge lift capacity.

You didn’t say that you were stating the name of the plane in the picture you literally just said the name and didn’t type anything else

It’s a Mi-10 copy 🤨😉🤣 It flew two years before sky crane did
View on Reddit #79657659

Jessie_C_2646@reddit

Nyet. The [S-60](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_S-60) and the MI-10 were designed at the same time. The S-60's shortcomings led to the development of the concept into the S-64 which is why it flew later than the MI-10 did.

it's a skycrane for anyone not familiar with the military designation used primarily for firefighting, not that weird as far this sub goes

View on Reddit #79591750

It's the same dynamic components, just pared down for maximum lift capacity.

Busy_Outlandishness5@reddit

I so very badly wanted the Revell Skycrane model. It came complete with cargo pod and 105mm howitzer as loadouts --- which you could lift or lower using a string and spool attached to the main rotor assembly. Several of my friends got it as X-mas/b-day gifts, and none of them appreciated half as much as I would have done. Is this perhaps why I now have about 100 unbuilt/partially built plastic models in my basement? (None of them is a Skycrane.)
