Tsdz8 motor problem.

Hey reddit, this is a Tongshen tsdz8 motor and it’s quite new. It’s been 2 months since i installed it and it’s been great. However, recently, it’s been making this grinding sound which appears only when i only use the throttle. It also happens when it’s in the small cogs but can also happen in lighter cogs. I tried to check if it’s the chain ring that was loose or the chain itself was worn. Just replaced the chain thinking that it was the chain slipping. But overall, it still happens occasionally and i am not 100% sure it’s it really the motor making the sound. I am in the process of contacting the distributor to diagnose the problem, but i hope Reddit holds the wisdom for this particular problem.

I’m having the same problem, when I use throttle from standstill it’s like something loud is grinding, only when I’m in motion that the motor is good for throttle. Did you ever find a fix ?

Hey there, yes i did fix it. I eventually found the root cause. It was NOT in fact the nylon gear but the clutch inside the helical gears.
Attached is a picture of the helical gears with the cover exposed which shows the clutch gears being smashed. DM me and i can send you a video to identify the sound

and this is why i ride a gearless hub ,yes its slow acceleration and it hates hills

My first guess is the nylon gears has been stripped because of the abuse of the throttle. This ebike was not used by me but I built it for my friend who needed to travel to his workplace nearby.

Mid drives aren't really the best on throttle anyway.
But the noise could be either stripped gears or they've become misaligned. Misalignment would be my best guess based on the fact that it happens sometimes, not all the time.
My recommendation would be dismantling it and reassembling it with correct torque specs and inspecting closely for damage as you go.

I did exactly that before recording this video. The before and after is the same. It even slips at higher gears (more teeth = mote torque less load)
