I'm an IT Consultant, however when I was working support - I could have days where I had pretty much the square root of zero to do, as everything was working. During covid, a large portion of our customer base just completely closed down & we were obviously WFH. I went 11 days straight without actioning a single ticket because there just wasn't the work there. Instead I spent my time doing jobs around the house that I'd been putting off, did some certifications & basically enjoyed the amazing weather, new content on Netflix and basically had a paid holiday like my furloughed counterparts did. Even in Consultancy where I work now, there can be really quiet days. However we work flexibly so I can just log off if I want & take the day as my own, it balances out during the busier times though. I've had to do a fair amount of out of hours work and travel.

I used to work with a guy in NHS IT. He was morbidly obese. He could barely walk. But he knew every, single, dirty trick and he had read the disciplinary and HR policies cover to cover multiple times. He did maybe 7 - 8 hours of work per week but the guy was Teflon unsackable and he knew it. He would swerve every kind of duty asked of him citing his disabilities and eventually the supervisors gave up asking and just let him get on with it rather than have a 20 minute argument with him. They eventually got him on gross misconduct for failing to turn up for a disciplinary meeting.

Since we started wfh a lot of people in my company sit at home doing nothing. The jiggle their mouse every few mins to keep 'Active', keep an eye on the emails and watch netlflix or whatever else they do. It's totally unfair and they keep getting away with it.

People keep acting like everyone stopped working once WFH became more common but don’t you think it’d be incredibly obvious if that was the case. The truth is people probably only did about 4 hours work in the office too. When I’m in the office, everyone gets in and gets the important stuff done for a couple hours and then everyone slows way down and starts chatting, going for more drink breaks etc. I can hear the buzz in the office get louder. The difference now is that we can get up and put on a load of laundry, start dinner and whatever else. Yes, we can also watch Netflix in the background but I don’t get why that’s an issue. It’s better than having to overhear other peoples thoughts office conversations and less distracting in my opinion

Me. I'm paid very well for what I do. But ever since graduating I've only really worked about 4 hours a day. Still got promoted on a regular basis, so as far as I'm concerned my employer is happy.

I work in IT - generally it’s management that are oxygen thieves. But lots of people who look like they’re doing nothing - until something goes wrong then all of a sudden they’re “critical”. Such is the way in IT support - as long as your platforms are well managed you can sit with your feet up a good bit of the time.

I know that feeling. My partner often thinks I am doing nothing. I mean she is kinda right, but at the same time I also fixed a critical issue that was almost escalated to director level by the time I had logged in. I turn up and fixed it in 5 minutes.
