Best hospital for having a baby in Dallas?

What is the best hospital for having a baby in Dallas? Is it hard for expectant moms to just choose their own hospital? I noticed that some recommend Presbyterian Dallas but which campus are they recommending? Or would medical cities Dallas or Baylor be the better options?

Texas Health / Presby Plano has a level 4 Nicu. I'm pregnant with twins and chose that hospital for the Nicu level and the great things I heard about it (and I also live in that area)

Hello how were nurses ? Were they helpful?
flightlessbird7@reddit
I loved the nurses there. My babies didn't end up needing to go to the NICU but I had some post partum complications. The nurses who took care of me were excellent. And the nurses who took care of our babies were also fantastic.

This. Had a great experience at Presby Plano. My OBGYN, who works in the same building, delivered the baby. We also had a pediatrician that we had picked do baby’s first check up while I was recovering. We took 2 classes from the hospital to prep for the delivery. As part of one class they did a hospital tour.

I’d recommend any hospital with a level 4 nicu. God forbid that you’ll ever need one but it is good to have one if the situation calls for it.

Presby Plano we had an amazing experience

Stay in Dallas proper. None of the suburbs. You start getting much higher c-section and episiotomy rates when you get out of actual Dallas.
Baylor, Presbyterian, UTSW, Parkland, all great options.
Medical City is fine. I know people who have been happy there. It's an HCA hospital though so I avoid it when possible. Medical City also has a higher episiotomy rate than all the above.

Technically, doesn’t UTSW have both a 3 and a 4, if you count Children’s?
Aster007@reddit
Our midwife suggested Baylor University med center near Gaston ave. Told to avoid medical city altogether. We had our baby at a birth center - way more peaceful.

Presby Dallas on Greenville/Walnut was amazing for 3 out of 4 kids. Phenomenal doctors and amazing staff.

Our children were born at UTSW and we had good experiences in both cases, including one during Covid.
But that's because my wife's OB/GYN is there. Aren't OB/GYNs generally affiliated with a hospital?

Yes I think so. My husband is wanting me to deliver in Dallas even though I’ve been seeing an OBGYN in another state. I’m not sure if it is even possible to get in with another OBGYN in Dallas at this point but am just exploring possible options for getting in with a clinic there and hospital options in case something did happen while traveling in that area.

Depends on how far along you are. The good practices usually do have long wait times for a new patient appointment. I had a great experience with Walnut Hill OBGYN/Presby Dallas. Granted, if you go into labor in Dallas, EMTALA laws mean any hospital has to treat you if you’re in active labor.

Yes - this is the sticking point with all of the other answers... to me it makes more sense to pick the OBGYN / midwife first and see if you even have an option. I have not had that luxury at either of my providers.
valiantdistraction@reddit
Picking an obgyn based on the hospital makes sense because each hospital does things differently, and if your own obgyn isn't available, you will end up with someone else - probably from the same practice but possibly just from the hospital. And the support staff like the nurses in L&D and the postpartum ward, the facilities where you're spending most of your time, etc, are all hospital-based.

Yes. I work in healthcare and I don’t see a lot of physicians in Dallas with admitting privileges at multiple hospitals (except maybe across the same system). OP, wherever your OB has privileges is where you’ll deliver.
speedyfish1491@reddit
There are several fabulous hospitals in Dallas but I think it will depend on where your OBGYN has admitting privileges.
If you do have a choice you may want to ask about "quiet" hours and a nursery -- one hospital in the area is kinda notorious for waking you up all through the night for rounds, might have been Med City? Also with "rooming in" being the norm now, some hospitals have discontinued nurseries altogether.
Technical_Quiet_5687@reddit
We did medical cities Dallas and highly recommend paying for the suite upgrade. Was on a floor with only 3/4 other babies and it was so quiet could hear a pin drop most days. The nursery staff is also great so got plenty of rest. I’ve had two babies there.
Logical_Mine_9478@reddit (OP)
What is the cost for the suite upgrade?
Technical_Quiet_5687@reddit
I would go do a tour. They’ll give you the pricing options as there’s 3 different rooms to choose from. I think the cheapest upgrade was like $300/night?

Does the baby stay with the mother the whole time at Med Cities Dallas?
valiantdistraction@reddit
This is the standard practice at all area hospitals, but you may want to check to ensure they do have a nursery in case you have a rough delivery and need more sleep.

FYI i was talking to a 8+ month pregnant acquaintance last week. She was set up to deliver at MC Dallas, but got switched to Baylor without explanation.

I had both my kids at Texas Health Dallas, which is what I’m assuming people are talking about when they say Presbyterian Dallas. Had great experiences both times. One of mine ended in an emergency c section and the nurses said I was fortunate to be there because they have more labor and deliver ORs so there was no wait time. Not sure how accurate that is but it literally took two minutes to get me into an OR.
valiantdistraction@reddit
Yes, that is Presbyterian

Was very happy with Med City Dallas.

Med city Frisco was amazing for both of our boys. Rooms are huge, even have an in-law suite in some.

UT SOUTHWESTERN!

Big Baylor was great for us. Bed was even fairly comfy(signed dad lol)

Whichever one is in your insurance network if you don’t want to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Not to mention the individual doctors that may or may not be in the network regardless if the hospital is or is not.

I had mine at UT southwestern, a very positive experience!

I loved my whole experience with Medical City Dallas!
