I don’t think most guys give a shit. I put in minimal effort to reaching out but I try hard to make any response a “yes”. I have friends living across the globe so we often don’t see each other or talk for months/years, but when we do, we just pick it up and crack on like it always was. I think adults know how life works so gaps between contact aren’t a problem.

Back in 2013 I did the great social jettison, nuking my facebook account with a bloat of old secondary school contacts, and moving hundreds of miles away. I count two guys I knew from back then who re-established contact. One contacted my younger brother asking after me and my brother passed my contact info onto him. The other one had managed to retain my phone number (I didn't know I'd even given it him) and out of the blue sent me memes over WhatsApp at the start of the pandemic. I've stayed in contact with both since. Personally, nothing felt weird or jarring about them finding their ways to reach out to me out of the blue. I wouldn't stress it, unless you'd originally cut contact with bad blood and unresolved issues. If it was just life getting in the way, and contact ceasing without any real intent, it shouldn't be a big deal just reaching out.

I got in touch recently with my old best mate from school last November. There was no big fight or anything, we had simply drifted apart. Went to different uni’s in different cities and life just got in the way. It had been about 12 years since we last spoke and while it was nice to catch up over lunch, I got the impression both of us had moved on and become different people. Of course we had stuff in common and did alot of nostalgic reminiscing but it was almost like we were on different wavelengths and in very different phases in life. I can’t really explain it properly but something just felt a little off. We were friendly enough with each other and I would still gladly meet with him for a beer should the opportunity arise, but if I’m honest the spark wasn’t there like it is with some of my other friends. Rather revealingly, asides from Merry Xmas, we haven’t messaged each other since. honestly, it felt like seeing an old work colleague rather than an old friend. I’m sure this won’t be everyone’s experience.

I'm very awkward when it comes to this. I moved back to my home town 18 years ago, and I have seen old school friends out and about and not stopped to say hi, but then nor have they. I tried to interest a Uni friend who lives close by in a coffee or something, and he sounded enthusiastic and then went quiet. I know another mate lives close, and I should arrange something, but neither of us seem that keen. Ho hum. But yes just do it. I suppose I don't do it out of a fear of rejection, and the painful realisation that we're probably not the same people anymore and don't have much to talk about. I made that mistake shortly after moving back, I met my best friend from school, just by chance, but ended up really not liking him very much and we drifted apart after a few meet-ups.

My experience is the opposite. Female friends I have, and my wife, find it really awkward contacting friends they haven't spoken to in ages. But for me and most men I know, we just pick up chatting the same as if we talked regularly. Coincidentally I did exactly that about an hour ago, I saw a game on Steam that reminded me of a mature I haven't spoken to in 3 years so I just sent him the link and said I thought he'd be interested and now we're chatting about it. IME, a you get older and life racks up more and more responsibilities and time-sinks, it becomes increasingly common to not see friends for months or sometimes years at a time, especially for guys. There's no point making a big deal of it. It's just life. We usually just end up texting out of the blue, opening up a conversion about something just the same as we would in the past, when we'd see each other on a weekly basis, except now it's been 18 months for some reason. Socially awkward person here *(reaching out to my socially awkward best friend back in shool)* It has been over 10 years. I started mine with a text message saying "Hey, is this still \*\*\* number?" (And it was) So I explained that I'd love to catch up with them if they were up for it. It was the first time I was actually looking forward to my birthday as we had arranged it on that day and near his own one. Good luck :)

I've been here before - I have 2 friends that are like this. I personally think it's about whether they are friends who you can just "pick up" with straight away. For one of them, I have to be direct so like "hey - beer on Thursday?" and I'll get a response. The other - I usually ask him about his kids or if I want to chat to him say "hey - do you have the headspace for a chat right now?" - he's going through a lot so I thought I would take a step back. If it's only been a year (yeah - I know it flies), then I would just start with "Hey - been a while - sorry but would be great to catch up" Also don't feel too bad about it, there could be reasons they haven't reached out either - you never know what's going on but you'll find out

I think you just need to acknowledge it’s been ages, and then see how they are. It’s very easy to um and ah about contacting someone, but when you actually do it then it’s fine. Any ‘awkwardness’ about how long it has been is usually less of a factor than you think it is.
