It's a pumelo. They're all that way.

Pith off!
MrFluffyThing@reddit
Two rabbits are eating lettuce in a garden. One asks, "does this taste pithy to you?"Â
"That's because I just pithed on it", the other replies.
zoidbergsdingle@reddit
Lettuce doesn't have pith...this rabbit story isnt adding up.
MrFluffyThing@reddit
Pithy lettuce is lettuce that has begun to bolt and has a tough and woody texture and bitter taste.
Former_Island_4730@reddit
Such a pithy.
Sea_Builder7038@reddit
Pitiful

Picked too early.
tropicalcannuck@reddit
Oh yum. If I had that much pith I would braise it. It makes for a very tasty dish!
Aridyne@reddit
A genetic throwback maybe?

MrIceVeins@reddit
Thats originally how certain fruits are before scientists got their hands on them
Liam_021996@reddit
Not even scientists, just selective breeding and splicing. Goes back around 11,000 years. Only became a recognised science about 250 years ago
SerendipitousAtom@reddit
Scientist weighing in here. I am a nuclear physicist by trade.
That's still science. The people who did this were scientists.Â
"Science" isn't a credential you get at a job, school, or from a government. It's just methodically working through some problem, starting out with a hunch (or "theory") that it could be better, sticking with it until you have a measurable change.
I don't care if it's done by prehistoric people or by some modern twat in a tweed jacket with leather elbow patches. You shouldn't care, either. Science is there for anyone who wants it, and the proof of your ability as a scientist is always in the results you achieve.Â
Liam_021996@reddit
Yes, its a science but what I'm saying is that its a practice that predates modern science and our understanding of the world
Trekman10@reddit
Its just important to value what ancient peoples did as science because there's a prevalent view in our culture that ancient people were dumb primitives who couldn't possibly have built the pyramids or cultivated plants
Liam_021996@reddit
Only idiots would think otherwise tbf. All I was saying is that until recently (in modern human terms) splicing, cross pollinating and selective breeding wasn't believed to be a science, it was only accepted as such in the 1700s
It wasn't until the 1850s that Austrian Monks essentially created modern selective breeding practice using peas. They discovered the principles of hereditary, dominant and recessive traits and all that, Mendelian inheritance it's called. Before that point we generally did things with the hope of achieving something but with no specific known way of how to do that and how to replicate. I'd say it only became an actual science at that point really
miauguau44@reddit
A Renaissance painting reveals how breeding changed watermelons
Lumpy_Salamander_979@reddit
Not just scientists....farmers and the like who bred them to be more profitable..most genetic manipulation of plants and animals was done by selective breeding long before science stepped in....
Moist_Ordinary6457@reddit
I mean science wasn't invented a few hundred years ago, subsistence farmers several thousand years ago were doing science too
Liam_021996@reddit
Yes but they didn't know it was science and didn't really have a method as such, just took seeds from a fruit that had characteristics they liked and tried to replicate it. It's why we have around 8,000 apple varieties, trial and error to get specific qualities and then we learned how to graft branches to trees and so on
comix_corp@reddit
They were, but I wouldn't call them scientists because of it
cave18@reddit
And just ancient peoples lol
chefsoda_redux@reddit
Pomelo is one of the original citrus fruits, and this is how nature grows fruit.
All the thin skinned lemons, limes, and oranges we eat today have been bred to have a much higher fruit to pith ratio. All modern citrus has been hybridized and bred from pomelo, citron, and Mandarin.
Much the way all tomatoes originated in central america, and were about an inch in size, then we bred them into a huge array of sizes, shapes, and flavors.
Leon_Trout@reddit
The fruit yearns for the pith
canzicrans@reddit
Don't forget my boy the papeda! No limes without it!
chefsoda_redux@reddit
I did totally forget kaffir limes, thank you. Iâve always been taught it was just those three originally, and I donât have enough horticultural knowledge to know the exact pattern.
canzicrans@reddit
I always forget about the kumquat, too (although I think the limequat is the only thing we get from it).
skyfd@reddit
One of the best fruit you can eat.
Aerodrache@reddit
Unless youâre on virtually any medication, in which no you canât, too closely related to grapefruit and contains the âscrew your medicationâ chemical.
dallyho4@reddit
Mmm, yes, in college my dumb self and company would use grapefruit (or their derivatives) to extend or amplify certain, uh, recreational activities.
skyfd@reddit
Grapefruits literally come from pomelos
Cyanide-Kid@reddit
THATS MESSED UP!!
MonkeyBred@reddit
It does worse than negate the medicines' effects. It deactivates a natural enzyme that lets your medication absorb over time, causing a huge spike in bioavailability, making it toxic.
Aerodrache@reddit
And the worst part is it isnât quite reliable enough to use grapefruit as a medication booster. Imagine pills being able to have like 5% of the current amount of active ingredient, and then grapefruit concentrate to supercharge it.
But nope! Screw your medication! Maybe it still works, maybe it doesnât, maybe itâs straight up poison now, none may know the true nature of the grapefruitâs curse until it is upon them!
TuvixWillNotBeMissed@reddit
Just pomelo juice and gin is one of the finest cocktails. They're naturally a bit sweet, a touch bitter and floral. God's perfect mixer.
bazonthereddit@reddit
It also inhibits your body's ability to metabolize alcohol.
skyfd@reddit
đŻ this would definitely pairs wellđ
Parking_Locksmith489@reddit
I agree, but then Ugli fruit has all the taste, easy thin peel and no seeds.
Choppedliver26@reddit
Thith taketh the pith
Hecc_Maniacc@reddit
Good god, you found the fruit the paeleo diet people speak of our ancestors eating.
gentlesquid7@reddit
Fruitn't
thotrap@reddit
Yeah that's a pithy
comix_corp@reddit
It's a pomelo, that's what they look like
dontcallmemean@reddit
Pomelos sometimes do, but definitely shouldn't have this absurd of a fruit to pith ratio
DudeWheresMyKitty@reddit
It's trying its best cut a fruit some slack, fuck
Riaayo@reddit
Fruit: Just trying to grow and exist.
Human who wants to eat the fruit but not bother to shit the seeds out somewhere they can grow: Hey why didn't you tailor yourself to be perfectly edible for me??
comix_corp@reddit
Depends on the cultivar. Modern commercially grown ones maximise flesh and minimise pith but you can find pithy ones pretty easy, I get them at Asian markets.
Also the pith doesn't need to go to waste, you can use it in cooking.
Carb0nFire@reddit
What a pithy response!
hikeit233@reddit
A friend had a really good one in their back yard, decently thick pith with lots of mellow juicy fruit. Loved getting some when I went over.
_dpdp_@reddit
The pomelos I eat do. Usually the piths have the sweetest fruit.
the1stmeddlingmage@reddit
Isnât there such a thing as candied citrus fruit rind? If so this could be a potential motherload
Estrellathestarfish@reddit
It's the rind that's candied (the outer layer), not the pith.
JimJohnes@reddit
Zest and albedo
Plannercat@reddit
Candied citrus peel is a thing, pith isn't desirable for it though.
Mattekat@reddit
Pomelo pith is actually candied without the rind!
Buzz-Killz@reddit
What does pith mean
Steam_Powered_It@reddit
Right, thats just ripping the pith now
GreenockScatman@reddit
They say "if life gives you lemons, make lemonade," but sometimes life is just a pith...

yodelsJr@reddit
this would pith me off so much
StoneyMcGuire@reddit
Why so pithy?
Responsible_Lawyer78@reddit
Lol đ
jtmonkey@reddit
WATER. This is usually due to a watering issue. The tree is trying to protect itself. I had this problem last year with watermelon. This year we built an automated irrigation system and everything was so much better.
StoneyMcGuire@reddit
I pithy the fool!
ebk_errday@reddit
That grapefruit's taking the pith
runningoutoft1me@reddit
Incredible.
silveretoile@reddit
Exotic etrog. Keep that thing for sukkot!
Next-Drink8593@reddit
BruhâŚ. This ratio is pithing me off. Hahahahah⌠see what I did there? Nope. As Iâm saying this I realise (yodelsJr) already beat me to it.
Elnuggeto13@reddit
The amount of zess you could get out of that would be insane.
apricotical@reddit
You zest the rind, not the pith. If you zested all of that it would just taste bitter and unpleasant. Only the outermost âskinâ of the citrus should be zested
Defiant-Scale6574@reddit
You got shorted
bazhvn@reddit
FWIW you can cook the rind into candy
TraditionPhysical603@reddit
That's a Pomelo, that's what they look like.
PubliclyIndecent@reddit
It would seem pomeloâs generally have more fruit in them than that, though. I canât find a single pomelo cross-section on Google with more pith than fruit like OP has here.
TraditionPhysical603@reddit
That's because people don't take pictures of low quality fruits, if you search this skinned pomelo there are plenty of picturesÂ
creatyvechaos@reddit
Ive had dozens of pomelos, cut them myself, and none have had anywhere near this difference
dijonriley@reddit
did you try turning it off and on again?
CrackpipeTheSmoker@reddit
Now thats taking the pith
HTGeorgeForeman@reddit
Is this cut through the center? You can achieve this on any pomelo by cutting higher up
banjoman234@reddit (OP)
Dead center
HTGeorgeForeman@reddit
Yeah thatâs tough
the_one_jove@reddit
Everybody's got a plan until they see the pith
LeviOhhsah@reddit
Wow youâre really taking the pith arenât you!
turquoise_amethyst@reddit
Have you posted this in r/fruit yet? Theyâll get a kick out of it
banjoman234@reddit (OP)
Just did lol
fernleon@reddit
You got scammed by nature
ConversationDizzy138@reddit
Five star Vegas bartenders hate this fruit it squirts in everyoneâs eyes.
VeckLee1@reddit
They squeezed the rind in front of a lighter to finish a martini and burnt the place down.

Well, you'll hit your weekly fiber goal with just one fruit.
sharkattax@reddit
pomel oh no
