These are so cool to me but I am afraid to shoot it too often because it has a proprietary barrel, barrel extension, barrel nut and tool. Only the barrel nut tool is obtainable for reasonable cost. Even if you do get the parts the gas port isn't drilled until after the barrel extension is installed so you basically can't swap the barrel unless you're a full up gunsmith

I don't think so, but these ones are egregious because Colt doesn't sell the parts to consumers. And even so I think the LMT stuff can take modified milspec barrels after some machine work. Yeah it's more steps and money, but there is a community-known route to getting it done whereas every forum thread I see about 694X uppers is that it's not worth the effort.
From reading about it the barrel extension needs to be installed first to set headspace, then the gas port is drilled to allow the FSB to align correctly. If you get an aftermarket barrel and try to install the barrel extension it will either not headspace or your gas port will not be top dead center. And to salt the wound you can only turn the barrel nut an eight of a turn at a time haha just a cherry on top.
I have a 10.3 6945 upper and I think it is really cool for a handful of reasons, but none of those reasons are because it's modular, easy to maintain/modify, or consumer friendly. A standard AR upper is more reasonable.

I wouldn't worry much about it. 5,000 rounds costs $2k right now. That amount of ammo isn't even close to harming a barrel unless you are seriously abusing it badly with an FRT dumping mag after mag after mag.
It's a gun it's supposed to be fired.
