Anyone ever notice how expensive those Franklin Mint collectibles were?

Look at the end of the ad, $278 for a made in China pewter replica of the starship Enterprise!

I wonder if something like this was so expensive because the market for it wasn’t totally saturated with toys and other keepsakes. Nowadays, you can get a million different versions of the Enterprise in a million different forms. And most of them are pretty accurate and cool looking. Why spend big money for the Franklin mint version when you can get a Lego version and a plastic toy version and probably some other metal version for half the price? But those weren’t options back then.

True, Trekkies were much more of a niche at the time, and the options were incredibly limited then. There is an entire industry around creating replicas of movie props and costumes now that didn't exist back then.

That shit was always in pewter. I remember that weird word from the chess set they were hawking.

Yeah, but it's probably worth a million dollars now! I remember the wildly overpriced civil war chess set that you got 1 piece a month, so it would take years to actually complete and would end up costing well over $500 not including shipping. You can find them on ebay now $300.

Looks like that one is actually in collector condition. I didn't see that when I was looking for them.
