Why are the AMD Ryzen 7 5800x3d and 5700x3d so expensive and hard to get?

I wanna upgrade my cpu but my motherboard doesn't support the current amd ryzen line. My current cpu is a ryzen 5600x and the best cpu's for my motherboard are the ones listed in the title but I realized they're basically impossible to find and the ones out there are basically double the msrp. Is there any way i can find those cpu's for a fairly normal price?
Cheesemaninspace@reddit
i have the exact same cpu and issue aswell. the am4 x3d cpus are not being made anymore as i understand and they are all crazy expensive as a result. There may be some you can find on marketplace or ebay but they all seem overpriced. Best bet is to upgrade to am5 for the newer cpus but then you would have to upgrade the motherboard, ram, ect.
that_guy_jaco@reddit (OP)
That was my original plan but the ram crisis makes it basically impossible
xelarets97@reddit
Check Newegg and microcenter they have good combo deals.
LukasAndr@reddit
zdravím, aktuálně se dívám po nové sestavě a řeším podobný problém. Díval jsem se na Microcenter balíčky a jsou v topu, ale nenabízí možnost zásilky, jen instore pickup. Je možné tohle nějak obejít ?

They are relaucnhing the 5800x3d broski

5800X3D se vraca u prodaju uskoro.

Because they are eol, fantastic, and ddr4.
devnet197@reddit
heavy on the fantastic!
BasicObligation7192@reddit
At this point.. with DDR5 dropping, it makes more sense to get AM5 than a used 5800x3d. Even one 16GB DDR5 will outperform 32GB on AM4. Plus you have upgradable scope right up to a 9950x3d2
Highkey_Lurker@reddit
I can’t speak to the 5700X3D’s prices, but the 5800X3D was basically the first X3D “prototype” if you will. They had limited manufacturing and were only meant to be a proof of concept.
Obviously they were more successful than the industry could’ve possibly anticipated.
With that said, the 5600x is a great CPU and wouldn’t be a huge upgrade in the FPS department. But if you were really dead set on getting, I’m sure you’d find no shortage of them being sold second hand on eBay. With that said, I’ve never bought a CPU second hand and so I can’t in good faith recommend it to someone else. Especially considering you’ve got a decent matched CPU that works already.
that_guy_jaco@reddit (OP)
I have looked on ebay but theyre crazy expensive
Elixr-z@reddit
Check marketplace, I found one for $300. You gotta check everyday for new listings, they go quick lol
Sad_Pair_4422@reddit
Even the 5500 is an exceptional cpu, for gaming even.
PotatoSilence@reddit
I’ve bought 2, the 2700x when I wanted to build my own and try AMD, perfect condition with a stock cooler. Have it to my brother which still running. Then I wanted to try again with a 3700x also 2nd hand, perfect condition no problems at all. So I do recommend buying 2nd hand from sellers with good rep (r/hardwareswap)
CuteRub2049@reddit
I just got lucky with a 5800x3d an hour away from me. Bought it for 450 🙏🏾💯
squawkc@reddit
5800XT is probably best u can get for am4 atm.
Plenty-Caregiver-666@reddit
Look for anything else. I have a Ryzen 7 5800x3d it is the worst cpu I've ever owned. It is so unstable. It has bad RAM issues. I have to run my ram on the lowest speed so the cpu dosent cause PC to crash on everything. Other games have issues with the RAM running so slow so i have to adjust my RAM speed in BIOS depending on what Im planning to play. No its not overheating. Its just a flawed CPU.
Tobbs182@reddit
Is $450 CAD (\~ $330 USD) an ok price for a 5800x3d right now?
shiftyshamrock@reddit
So right now i have a AMD Ryzen 7 3700X and i want the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D but brand new 837Euros or re furbished for 450!? Yay or Nay?
wildcat002@reddit
Now, they sell used 5700x3d for over 400 euros, what a scam
For that amount of money, i got new 4k monitor + Ryzen 5 3600 and it still pushes 7800xt to 100% which is great.
emitfudd@reddit
Don't count out the 5900X if you find one that's affordable. I'm playing games in 4K and it's keeping up with my 4090. Not quite as good as the x3d's for gaming but still good.
Revolutionary-Top-70@reddit
Out of curiosity, would moving to the 5900x from the 5600g be a worthwhile upgrade? I'm running into the same issue as OP. I would prefer to stay AM4 but I can't justify the price of the X3D CPUs.
emitfudd@reddit
From what I just looked up, the 5600g has integrated graphics. Do you use the integrated graphics or do you have a separate GPU? If you upgrade to a 5900X you are going to have to have a separate GPU and a pretty decent one to get any good performance while gaming.
Googling gives a huge mix of results comparing the 5600g to the 5900X. Some information I found says there is only a single digit gain in performance while others say there is a 98% improvement.
I can tell you that I am gaming in 4K with ultra settings and ray tracing turned on and with DLSS set to balanced I get 80 to 120 FPS in most games. Sometimes higher but this is the average I get.
Revolutionary-Top-70@reddit
I'm running a 6650xt as far as my GPU goes. I can run most games on high settings with a few medium settings sprinkled in on heavier titles. My main issue right now is that my CPU is throttling my frames on some newer titles. More specifically on unoptimized/early access titles.
As far as your clock speed, I take it you're overclocking to get the 4.95Ghz? Or is it just naturally boosting up to 4.95Ghz? What is your PSU rated for and do you know your system's TDP off the top of your head?
I'm not looking to jump to AM5 until I absolutely need to personally. The 5900x seems like it could be a decent option if I can't get my hands on an X3D unit for a reasonable price.
emitfudd@reddit
No overclock. It boosts as long as it has thermal headroom which mine does with a 360mm AIO cooler.
I was using a 1440p monitor and had an 850W PSU. When I switched to a 4K monitor it was strongly advised to upgrade my PSU to a minimum of 1K and preferably 1200W. The 5900X is rated at 105W but can draw up to 140 or so. The 4090 is rated at 450W but can have spikes up to 600W. You also want to consider that your PSU is most efficient at 40 to 60% load. I ended up buying a 1600W PSU and never have to worry about having sufficient wattage for my next couple of builds.
Your GPU only uses 180W max. I still wouldn't skimp on the PSU. It is the heart of your PC. A good quality PSU like a Seasonic Prime Titanium with a 12 warranty is my go to. Also think about how many watts you are going to need when you do upgrade to AM5 or AM6 some day.
SmuffyMcSmuffin@reddit
Just snagged 5800x3D on FB marketplace for $150. Originally they wanted to sell the whole PC. I asked if they would part out. I have been looking for MONTHS. Luck finally came.
a531train@reddit
I'm still using a 5600 from a build in 2022, don't see a need to upgrade. Though I upgraded a 12th gen i3 to i7 for $184.
borgie_83@reddit
Funny seeing some of the prices people are paying for the 5800X3D because they literally could’ve bought an AM5 motherboard, 32GB DDR5 ram and a 9600X for a similar price.

so whats the decent alternative if we cant get our hands on an x3D?

I have a 5800X3D I’m selling if someone is interested as I just upgraded to a 9800x3D and AM5 on my sim rig PC
I had DDR5 on our home/office PC I’m snagging lol so I saved on the DDR5 massacre
Im not sure on what to sell it for … I’m located in Canada so if someone’s interested let me know
I only used it for my sim racing rig and it was great but was still my bottleneck on triples

I just upgraded my own setup and considered a similar chip, so when I saw GameStop's clearance sale that included AM4 x3d chips, my first thought was, I had no idea GameStop sold CPUs. But I linked it in case you were interested OP

Already out of stock.
John_Mat8882@reddit
They are out of production and whoever owns one, keeps it jealously.
I have a 5800x3D and honestly it's undistinguishable from my other 7800x3D if not for the GPU difference (9070 XT in the AM5 and a 7900xt in the AM4).
Plus in these DDr5 crazy times, AM4 has certainly seen a resurgence, so all you can do if you want to max out your platform atm Is a 5700x or a 5800x/XT; but unless you see your CPU pegged at 100% and therefore adding a couple of cores/threads may help you out, your 5600x has roughly the same gaming IPC of the 8 core brethren.
Doyoulike4@reddit
Being out of production for over a full year now combined with being two of the fastest DDR4 compatible CPUs especially on the AM4 socket in particular.
Honestly the best things to be looking for with AM4 socket at this point unless you get lucky are probably the 5800X/5800XT/5900X/5900XT/5950X.
Any-Neat5158@reddit
The AM5 versions of these chips are expensive. DDR5 ram is expensive. So AM4 X3D chips and DDR4 memory have started to increase in price (because of the high demand.... people looking to save money over the AM5 / DDR 5 line of products).
xman_111@reddit
because everything is fucked up.
Former-Coconut-4540@reddit
Ive seen one sell for $400 recently. Honestly I think I will sell my cpu+mobo+ram+pc case since I have a micro atx and microcenter near me has am5 bundles
Naerven@reddit
Because they have been out of production for a couple of years as AM4 was being phased out.
VersaceUpholstery@reddit
Buy them at a fair price used? Not until AM6 comes out, probably
Everyone with those CPUs are likely holding onto them until then because they’re just that good
Ryan32501@reddit
You missed the train bud. Got a 5700X3D at microcenter in August of 2024 for $179
Nichers@reddit
A year ago, I was looking at the 5800x3d as a slot-in upgrade to replace my 3700x - I was tired of being cpu limited on my 4090. The prices were ridiculous, and I was lucky enough to be able to just upgrade to AM5 and get the 9800x3d and be happy it was meaningfully faster than the 56/57/5800x3d chips (I'd spent over a year umming and ahhing about the 7800x3d maybe not being enough of an upgrade at the time).
That was before "waves at all of this datacentre price inflation hellhole* made both platforms more expensive. I looked at the price of a 5950x and another 2x32gb ddr4 kit to beef up my now server, last month, and almost cried.
The 5800x3d sold out a long time ago. They released any leftover seconds as the lower tier chips, and they too sold out pretty quickly. Now we're fighting over scraps.
lesecksybrian@reddit
Time to look for a 5900x 🥲
BaronB@reddit
SlapapaSlap@reddit
Yeah, the prices for it are insane. I paid less than 20 euros after selling my AM4 5800x3d build to upgrade to the AM5 9800x3d. Both builds have/had 32gb of ram (cl16 3600mhz and cl30 6000mhz). New 9800x3d with warranty cost less than used 5800x3d with no warranty.
Accomplished_Emu_658@reddit
They are no longer produced thats why. They are also now in more demand due to ddr5 crisis
cijev@reddit
i have 5800x3d. how much do you offer?
Just_Maintenance@reddit
They've been out of production for a while, and are still in heavy demand since they are excellent and use old and cheap(er) RAM and motherboards.
Codys_friend@reddit
Basic economics: high demand + low supply = high prices. People want to hold in to their systems with ddr4 ram yet want better performance. The 5800x3d and 5700x3d are the natural choices to get better gaming performance. As has been stated, those chips are out of production. High demand and low supply results in painful prices. For further evidence please refer to ramageddon and the gpu-pocalypse!
GABE_EDD@reddit
Because the only other option is AM5, people trying to stay on AM4 creates demand, them no longer being made makes supply small, and boom the laws of supply and demand take effect.
Andcat710@reddit
Yeah you just gotta build a time machine 1st.
Paweron@reddit
They stopped producing these quite a while ago, so they are no new ones. But with the RAM prices being so horrible, a lot of people now want one to keep their DDR4 RAM
pythonic_dude@reddit
Because AMD stopped making new ones in 2024.
