ULPT: The vast majority of commercial coin-operated laundry machines can be opened with the same 3 key models from Greenwald industries. Here's how to figure out which one you need.

I've seen similar posts to this, but have not seen specifics posted here about which key models are commonly used.

Most commercial and apartment coin operated washers and dryers use the same set of tubular lock models manufactured by Greenwald Industries for their control panels. These are almost always keyed alike (that is, all machines of the same type use the same keys). However, the key used varies by model.

The vast majority of machines use one of these three key models: GR777, GR800, or GR888. All three are available on Amazon for $10-20. In my experience, Kenmore and Whirlpool machines use a combination of GR800 and GR888. I believe (but have not confirmed myself) that machines that say "Speed Queen" on the front usually use the GR777. These keys will work regardless of whether your lock has "Gi" or "ESD" imprinted on it.

If you don't know for sure which key you need, google the specific model number and look for replacement lock sets. Focus on the pictures that come up -- usually the manual does not specify which key is used, but third parties will often post pictures in which you can make out the key number. It's usually printed on the side of the key itself. Or, to save yourself the trouble of multiple orders, try ordering 2 or 3 of these at once and simply return the ones that don't work for your machines.

I did a deep dive on this after realizing I had personally put enough quarters into my apartment washer over the last 3 years to pay for the entire unit, which is complete BS in my opinion. Stop giving your landlord free money!
