So not interesting story time. When I was 12 I think my old stepmom had a friend come down from Philly to NOLA. She was super weird, wore a Fannie pack, danced awkwardly, and she brought her 5yo son too, his name, of course, was Jimmy Ray. He was still in diapers and had a rat tail. AND SHE PLAYED THIS SONG LITERALLY EVERY CHANCE SHE GOT. Go to the store? Jimmy Ray. Went to the zoo. Jimmy Ray. Every time we got in the car to go somewhere, Jimmy Ray. This went on for a week straight. She told us she named her son after this song, I hadn't ever heard it before, and it has scarred me for life every time I hear it now.
Even though he never was popular I seen him in Portland Oregon back in 98 and it was a good show. I've seen over a 1000 concerts and his show still stands out in my memory. Good vibes and fun people.
This is blowing my mind right now. I havenāt thought about this song/video nor have heard anyone ever talk about it. Seeing this just immediately unlocked a memory of it playing a decent amount on mtv.
I had this album on cassette tape lol. I was about 13 at the time. I could probably still remember a few of the other songs on it. I think there was one about going to Vegas.
I remember watching a lot of VH1 (because I wasnāt allowed to watch MTV) and this song was in the rotation for like, a week, and I remember my autistic ass being confused about this song and wondering if I was supposed to know who this guy was, because why is he singing about himself?
Only tangentially related, I remember the first time I saw the music video for I Believe In A Thing Called Love (which was also the first time I'd ever heard the song.) I thought it was awesome that there was a new comedy band making fun of hair metal, but was also making good music.
Nope. Not a comedy band at all. They took that shit incredibly seriously. Which I still can't actually wrap my head around.
Even saw them in concert once and they were fucking amazing.
Ahead of their time.
They would fit right in today with the likes of Babymetal and Electric Callboy and Maximum The Hormone and Chuggaboom and Ghost.
Metal wasnāt allowed to be playful yet also sober back then. It had to be either deadly serious or completely hammered.
My husband advocated hard for A Thing Called Love as the walk out song of our wedding. I didnāt think it would age well but I was wrong. I still love it.
Permission to Land was a good album! It was funny, satirical, and still really solid music. I wish the rest of their albums had been as good, because I loved it.
Saw them on the Permission to Land tour and they were awesome. Glam metal is so fun. I love harder metal too, but at the right times glam is the perfect vibe.
If [setlist.fm](http://setlist.fm) and [concertarchives.com](http://concertarchives.com) are to be believed, I must have seen them June 12, 2004, because it's the only time they came here until...*checks notes...*last year? Although I distinctly remember seeing them on my birthday in January (except maybe I just got the tickets *for* my birthday. Memories are funny)
I subscribe to Justin Hawkins Rides Again on YouTube just because heās actually really goddamned insightful and enjoy agreeable things coming from a British accent
Fun fact: When Jimmy Iovine and Dre created the very famous Interscope records, Gerardo was the first to be signed. Primus only said yes as the second artist because they thought it was cool that they had Rico Suave. š¹
That. Is. Wild.
Gerardo really was packaged in a Terrance Trent Darby "hello consumers, this is the next big thing" sort of way. The hype was pretty loud, I just never would've placed the people you mentioned as being sold on it as well. But I respect them, so they must know something about Gerardo that I never learned. Even when I was a little guy, I just didn't see it - it felt contrived before I even knew the word contrived. Like being force-fed almost. Then a few years later, Ricky Martin came along and was just being authentic with a legitimately great single and it worked way better.
I was 100% certain I had never heard this song for the first 13 seconds of the video. Then at the exact right moment a repressed demon from deep within went āwho wants to know? who wants to know?ā
Iāve seriously said for years that if I could replace all the lyrics of songs (including ones I actually kind of hate) with useful information in my brain, Iād be fucking unstoppable.
I personally know this song's because it was the dumbest thing ever and my sister and I would sing/scream it at each other really aggressively. Good times.
I was 9 years old in 99 and heard almost all hit songs on the radio in California and I never heard of or seen this dude with his big ass belt buckle lol
I figured it had to be getting play somehwhere to chart like it did. Must have been super aggressive in some regions. I was in Ohio and an avid radio listener. Zero play there.
I was in highschool at the time and there were actual TV ads on afternoon tv CONSTANTLY promoting the single/album! I thought "why is this guy so huge, I never heard of him, just one song?" like they were pushing for this guy to be a huge star. I remember hearing the song constantly till it just disappeared overnight.
Any chance this guy was bucketed with country music (based on the belt buckle)? Might explain why a bunch of folks never heard of an artist that charted
Another Columbus person said the same! I was down by the river near Kentucky and I never heard it once. The one pop/Top 40 station I could hear (Z93) was strangely hostile to UK and euro stuff even the big hits like Ace of Base.
I remember the song but not really the music video. I heard it a lot, but not sure where I heard it. Must have been the radio in northern Wisconsin, but could have been hearing it over and over again at the mall.
I was going to say, I can picture myself practicing javelin throws while a teammate named Dave just sang this song over and over. It was a long afternoon.
I was in middle school when this song came out! if I recall. TRL really pushed this song and this guy, I grew up in Texas and I guess they took the bait because they played it so much on the radio that summer.
We had a friend in school called Stephen Gray. Like the children we were, we sang "Are you Stephen Gray?" whenever he walked pased. It annoyed him and I feel bad 30 years later!
This came out during that tiny 18-24 month window when MTV and radio stations realized Post Grunge and Hardcore Rap.and Adult Contemporary crooners were giving them diminishign returns,so until Teen Pop-Nu Metal took off in 98 you had a short window of things that don't fit the Zeitgeist randomy being 1 hit wonders. That's why stufff like Legend Of A Cowgirl,How Bizarre,Da Dip,Coco Jambo and Naked Eye charting without really fitting into any of the radio station formats or MTV playlist of that time.
Kinda,....Not exactly. He wanted to do traditional rockabilly which you can probably guess but the attire, and a producer decided it needed to be hybridized with dance and hip-hop.
Apparently he released an album of the type of music he wanted to much later.
Thank you for this. Always thought this guy was some kind of weirdo narcissist who thought everyone wanted to know about him. But it seems he was just another victim of the pop machine.
I have such a clear memory of being in nyc outside of the mtv studios when he was on trl and he came over to the window and my 13 year old heart exploded š preteen crushes were a wild thing back then
I completely forgot about this song...until the familiar guitar rift Plunged me back into my last year of 8th grade and beginning of freshman year. Yowza! Jimmy Ray blast from the past audible time capsule.
It's the type of crap made to appeal to corporations and produced in the hope it gets put into fast food commercials. I can't think of any organic interest in this.
And holy shit if you want to make the song a million times worse, he recorded another version called ["Who Wants to Know?"](https://open.spotify.com/track/4hjXnEbDbIgSH13tzjrteo?si=ceca132ec8aa42aa) (holy shit, even this version, missing all the great vocalization and fun of the original, grows on you by the end. This song is evil.)
I love it too. Had the single on CD as a young lad.
And I think itās still pretty good. Cool guitar riff (electric acoustic?), funky baritone sax noise, good bass line. And mixed really, really well!
Somebody tell me if this is insane:
First, this post just in general encouraged me to google the hell out of Jimmy Ray, and also look to see if maybe there was any official comment about the lyrics specifying if it's actually Aretha or reefer or whatever. After massive amounts of clicking various links, I ended up on his facebook page (I don't have FB), which has an e-mail address listed, so I decided to email him asking if he'd tell me what the actual lyrics are. This is what I've been doing for the last 40 minutes at work.
Am I a crazy person?
Respect. I don't think it's Aretha. I'm not hearing a "th" at all with headphones. I saw some lyrics listed as "with a reaper". The sound I'm hearing definitely involves lip action and not tongue action. So that puts it at f, v, b, or p. I'm putting my bets on team reefer.

I hated this song when it came out, and I hate it now. I've never forgotten about it because of the terrible lyrics. I never understood the appeal. Was I supposed to know who he was? I didn't want to know about him.
I unfortunately instantly recognized both the song and video, it was in heavy rotation on radio and MuchMusic in Canada. As god-awful as the lyrics are, I actually kind of dig the production, specifically the 50s jangly guitar.
I was working in a record store and our store-play tapes were a 4-6 week run this fucking songā¦I heard it twice a shift for over a month. I hate it with the searing hot vitriol of a 600 degree acid puddle on the surface of Mercury.
I remember hearing this song that summer in the pre-show "entertainment" when we'd go to see a movie. "Now the latest hit from Jimmy Ray!" then they'd play a bit of this video. Never heard it on the radio, and hadn't heard again until today. I still hate it!
I somehow missed this song until maybe last year when someone showed me the video.
Weirdly, when I was watching YouTube yesterday it randomly autoplayed to this video, too. It's some kind of Jimmy Ray conspiracy!
Was this regional? I managed a record store in the DC area from 96-00 and don't recall this at all even when we were forced to play Billboard chart songs in-store.
Itās so funny this is on here because the Xennial group on FB just posted about this! We must be having some weird Jimmy Ray synergy. I loved this song but the rest of the album was bad. It was a fun 15 minutes of fame for him.
Phantom hit?? * *gasp* * Aw, I loved this song at 16, lol. Maybe it got more play in Canada? I don't think he ever had anything but that one single, and nobody was breaking down his door for more, but that one definitely got radio play and got requested at school dances, lol.Ā
It's a pretty catchy bop to a less-than-fully-developed brain.Ā
I just looked it up, it hit #2 on the charts in Canada, you would have heard it heaps.
It only made #84 here in Australia. I had no idea what this song was called though. Yes I heard it on our regional radio station a decent amount, but just thought it was called 'who wants to know?'
Had completely wiped it from my memory until OPs post today it appears haha
I remember him playing on Much Music, guitar not plugged in, definitely singing to prerecorded track, and surrounded by dancers. It was terrribbbllee. lol
I have no memory of this somehow, even as someone who was consuming pop music at the time. He has a great look and I unmuted this expecting some kind of rockabilly revival thing and instead it is the most cynical, insipid mid-90s pop trash. Totally forgettable. Do up and coming pop artists still put out songs about themselves like this anymore? Terrible look of you donāt score a hit.
I think it still happens in passing with rap but it's less embarrassing in that format.
That first Boyz II Men single is horrible looking back. It's basically a commercial for their album introducing themselves. Talking about the producers, what they're names are, and how excited they are to have an album.
Backstreet Boys did a cheesy thing too. That first single on the second album was "Backstreet's Back" like aww yeah this is our second album are you ready guys?
The Backstreet Boys thing was incredibly funny because their debut was released a little over a year earlier, like, did you even go away at that point to an extent that being back would be notable?
Music really really went downhill in the 2nd half of the 90s. I know that was our prime HS years but I am not afraid to admit it. After all the greatness that came out of the first half of the 90s, the 2nd half kinda stalled.
I havenāt thought of this in years but if you yelled āare you Jimmy Ray?!ā at me I absolutely wouldāve sung āwho wants to know, who wants to know-oh-ohā back at you.
Damn, thatās certainly a belt buckle.
This song mustāve been regionally popular because I donāt remember it playing on any radio station or even on MTV at any time in the year 1997 or anytime after that until now.
Pretty sure there's a Todd in the Shadows One hit Wonderland video about this song. ([Yup](https://youtu.be/J88Qp0ooIyU).)
I remember the song, didn't realize it was ever actually a hit. Just seemed like one of those one-shot flash-in-the-pan novelty songs that hits music TV for a week and then disappears, like that Crazy Frog Axel F remake.

Holy fuck... this song...i totally forgot about it. This is why i love the 90s... it brought us great eclectic subs and this hahahahaha š
Same exact year... try "Legend of a Cowgirl" by Imani Coppola
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n26hAOmkmFE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n26hAOmkmFE)
I captioned this from a used media store in 2017: "Nobody wants to know."
https://preview.redd.it/fbam4migbhkg1.png?width=1102&format=png&auto=webp&s=7b2d6b8c8b7614169369b7ad4e56c5dcc9469126
This song will always remind of early spring in 1998 when I would go jogging out in those Northern CA warmish April spring rains then come home and turn on a top 40 radio station in the shower and this song seemed to always be on. A nostalgic reminder of my responsibility free days of high school life.
For about 20 years every lyrics site on the internet got the lyrics wrong because they scraped from a source that thought the lyric was "Are you sad ray" instead of slim ray.
I know what youāre talking about. I love it still. Another forgotten gem from the same time that crosses through my brain every once in a while.
[Legend of a Cowgirl](https://youtu.be/n26hAOmkmFE?si=81QWfIyBHDR9ySnj)
This, and Imani Coppalaās [Legend of a Cowgirl](https://youtu.be/n26hAOmkmFE?si=kGS-76C5vpeHdylv), are my go to obscure 90s hits when discussing high school music with friends.
LOVE that one, I have mentioned it here in the comments too. They came out at the same time more or less. Shame it flopped, I have always loved it. She was in a sidebar in all the magazines one month and that was it.
That's a big part of it. I was in rural hinterland with no cable in sight. This thread still shows how polar it is. Either inescapable or no recollection whatsoever.
I was working at Camelot Music during this time! Crazy how big it ended up getting with zero (attempt) at a follow up single. From what I can remember.
I swear I have never heard this song in my life. Certainly possible I just missed it, but I was still into pop music and MTV back then. Just another thing that makes me wonder if we're all just randomly jumping to different nearby multiverses.
Around 2017, he released a project titled āLive to Fight Another Day,ā marking his first full record in about 20 years.
He also has a youtube channel that has 413 subscribers:
Letās not go that far.
https://preview.redd.it/95ytxtukjhkg1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=66b854996e180066232e046e401e22ed19788e6b
But who didnāt want the extended versions that came with the single? I had to go dig this out. Hilarious. Oh the youth of the 90ās such easier times.
This song and music video has always been like a fever dream to me. No one knows about it. No one has heard the lyrics when I sing it. No one remembers the weird video with the interesting dancers, or his massive belt buckle and sickly appearance (like doc Holliday/val Kilmer in Tombstone). No one remembers it being forced upon us with no request - it was on MTV all the time for what felt like months, only to be gone in an instant and never heard again.
I swear it's a psyop. This thread is confirming what I always felt. You were either super targeted by it or you have ZERO experience with it. It's a targeted sonic weapon of some sort.
they tried to bring back rockabilly, and it didn't work out
also I distinctly remember ancient hairproducts like brylcreem got a relaunch, only this time it was just another hairgel with an aggressive showergel type scent.
it was kinda weird
This song is in our work rotation. Itās hard not to sing along even though I find it annoying. This music mix is eclectic for sure - right now itās Rambling Man, up nextā¦Misled by Kool & the Gang. š
I remember this song in an eye-twitchy kind of way because it was on loop of music that played in the lobby of the movie theater where I worked in high school. They got a new CD every 6 weeks or so, so I had to ear this every couple of hours my entire shift for weeks and weeks and weeks.
This song played on MTV allllll the time. Hated it then and still hate it now. I have to admit though, it is catchy and gets stuck in my head the way the worst songs always do. Thanks OP!
I have never heard this song, and I don't have my volume up. But based entirely on the visuals, this looks like Smells Like Teen Spirit meets All About the Benjamins but country.
You will never convince me music didn't peak in 1997. I hated the hard turn into cock rock everything did after this banner year.
This song was constantly played in my house. It's fun.
NAILED IT!!!! I had a hunch you would know. It's the same deal. Nobody knows what the fuck I am talking about, and it was inescapable to me. The video where she dresses up as Bananarama in "Venus" is insane. Like Nelly Furtado meets Kelis. Unlike Jimmy Ray, I loved that one.
The 90s had a LOT of fun one hit wonders no one remembers, lol. We didn't have MTV but we had this weird late night music video service called The Box where you'd dial in a 1-900 number and pay to see a music video played on TV. I saw a lot of these one-off hits' music videos that way.
Whoa!!! Where was that hiding in my head?? That was huge for a short moment. Completely forgot about it. Thanks for bringing it back!
Who wants to know???!
This also reminds me of that Presidents of America songs Peaches....I feel like no one remembers but me.
I shall teach my 11 year old of both songs so that he will master music trivia in the future. Also I shall try to get these on vinyl....if it exists.
Oh yeah, I remember this. Haven't heard it in decades, and I'm not turning the volume on to listen to it now because it still gets stuck in my head from time to time.
I'm going to request that I sing this on open mic night. The guitarist will be nice enough to go find it and learn it....check back in a month and I'll report back lol
I watched a LOT of mtv at that time and listened to a lot of radio. This doesn't ring a bell at all. I wonder if it was more heavily played in some regions of the US than others.
This particular year in music is fascinating to me because I was in college for my first year. We couldn't really listen to radio stations in the dorms, I only watched MTV at home on breaks but I played a ton of LAN games and N64. It was the era of swapping mp3 files over the network, but ripping mp3s wasn't quite trivial and there was always a lag between stuff being released and popping up on the LAN.
So this one totally missed me.
It was so quickly forgotten. It is mostly remembered by those of us who worked in secondhand record stores and had boxes of the 2nd hand single that nobody wanted.
This song and video are so terrible that it's good. So many people don't remember this monstrosity, and I love to occasionally share it to remind people of what happened.Ā
I look it up every 3 years or so and this was one of those days. It's one of those things that nails so many things I hate and don't want to hear, that I feel seen by it in a way. It gets me.
Ok, this song reminds me of this other song that had something to do with 52 cards and it was a single by some guy who looked a lot like this guy and around the same time but the internet seems to have no record of it.
Any ideas?
I can't honestly remember if I've seen this or not. Seems vaguely familiar. But it's _so basic_ it could sound like 1000 other things.
Super late 90's though. Good pull.
I hadn't heard this song since 97 until it was brought up on a subreddit as one of the worst songs of the 90s. It was pretty catchy but the lyrics for sure are some of the worst
Oh god this fucking song. Because of this song one of my friends in high school always used to answer questions with "Is it Jimmy Ray?" and "maybe it's Jimmy Ray!"
It got a laugh for a year or so and then everyone forgot about this song. He still kept it up though.
I remember this song, but over the years in my memories it became a Sugar Ray song. Wouldnāt have been able to tell you the actual artistās name with a gun pointed at my head lol.
Whoa. I have not (consciously) thought of this song in forever. However, having heard it I feel like it comes up in the background of my mind from time to time.
I remember at the time thinking, āthey are trying so hard for a pop culture moment here, and itās barely breaking ground,ā think I saw like once on MTV, and a few times on The Box.
This is one of those things I remember seeing that was as cringe inducing now as it was in real time, in fact moreso
I saw this as someone who was like...15 and even then I was like "this guy is NOT going to happen"
Yep, this one is buried deep in my memory bank but itās in there. And weāre not alone⦠on a D&D podcast called The Adventure Zone, a player cast a spell called Scorching Ray and made a joke that referenced this wretched tune.
This had to be a major payola scheme forced into late night rotation or something because I never heard it on the radio once. Details are hazy but I know I saw the video more than once, on tv screens in mall stores. Maybe Journeys?
I do remember this and have brought this artist up at a few times to others. It was a flash and poof gone. I felt like it was a fever dream as no one seemed to know who or what I was talking about.
