Is DLSS Really That Good?

I currently have a 7900XT in both of my builds, and they run pretty damn well at 1440p, but I’ve been looking at the 5070 ti (even though I would prefer a 4070 ti Super if I can find one) and have considering getting one just to give the DLSS suite a shot. Am I just out of my mind, or are the Nvidia’s software components really that worth while to even give this a second thought?
P.S. I refuse to use Frame Gen so I don’t care for arguments in favor of it. I just care about DLSS, DLAA, and RT performance/features
_Rah@reddit
DLSS and DLAA are that good, yes.
So is frame gen, but you have already made up your mind for some reason. I don't know why you would settle for the choppiness of a 60FPS, when you could be flying high and smooth with 200 FPS. I have a 5090 on a 1440p display, and I tend to turn on frame gen in all single player games when I can. For context I don't play single player FPS games.

5090 on 1440p is overkill…
_Rah@reddit
Its 480Hz 😛
nuenoxnyx@reddit
Mate you have a 7900XT. Just use it for the next 4 years and wait for the next gen to release. It's already fantastic for 1440p.
DLSS main purpose is upscaling to higher reso. If your native 1440p fps is good and you're not planning to go 4k, there's no real point.

Pretty much my take. That’s already a great 1440p card, a 4070 Ti Super is a side grade for performance (5070 Ti is a small upgrade but not palpable).
It’s in an awkward position to be sure but it’ll be able to brute force 1440p for a while yet. Powerful enough that nothing will really feel like an upgrade in raw horsepower without costing $1500+ but just the wrong side of a set of hardware changes that power a lot of modern features.
zbloodelfz@reddit
There will be no next gen:)
Jbarney3699@reddit
You have no reason to upgrade when you have a 7900xt.

Cool, so based on the tone and general passive aggressiveness of this comment compared to the rest of this thread, I’m going to ignore that you made any comment moving forward
Jbarney3699@reddit
I don’t think my comment was that out of left field, but ignore it I guess. Just saying, the downsides of AMD was known at the time. Opting for AMD instead of NVIDIA is usually only done for people who don’t care for upscalers, didn’t care for RT and bought a card for raster specifically. IE why I’m saying it’s a likely purchase mistake on your end, if in retrospect you’re considering those features.
dabocx@reddit
Just wait another gen at least
Stcphantom4256@reddit (OP)
Unfortunately, it feels like we’re not going to get another Gen with the way the AI has taken priority
Nikndex88@reddit
It does feel that way but I sincerely doubt that will be the case. People love hardware waaayyy too much
Stcphantom4256@reddit (OP)
The thing is that “the people” have long since left Nvidia’s priority list, and they benefit way more from just dedicating the majority of their hardware allocation to AI
Nikndex88@reddit
Yeah private consumers have left their priority.
Demand will hopefully remain which means if Nvidia doesn't supply, someone else will.
Memory can continue to be made and production can be increased it's just not going to be in the short term
dabocx@reddit
We will but it’ll be second half of next year
Stcphantom4256@reddit (OP)
I don’t mean to seem disrespectful to your perspective, but that seems very overly optimistic given the current circumstances.
LBCvalenz562@reddit
DLSS is literally awesome it’s leaps and bounds better than the next best thing.

AMD FSR Native AA if the game supports FSR 3.
Optiscaler, a 3rd party app can be used to enable FSR4 on the 7900XT, albeit with some problems.
Short:
DLSS 4.5 >> FSR 3
DLSS 4.5 > FSR 4
If you want ray tracing, it's an Nvidia feature, they're still way ahead of AMD, and they often work with game developpers to implement these features in the few games that have it (like Cyberpunk 2077 path tracing).
Don't expect RT to work really good for AMD until their next generation cards in 2027 or 2028. VRAM shortage are hitting everyone hard.
If RT is your priority, a 5070ti or 5080 is your best option, depending on what you find. 4070ti Super is very good too, but I suppose not many users are willing to depart with their cards.
I am an AMD user and I like my 7900XTX, btw. So no partisan bias here. Different priorities, that is all.

Not to mention, it’s one of those situations where I don’t necessarily need the Nvidia features to get the visual quality and frame rates that I like, I just hear so many hear so many people talk about the wider feature set that Nvidia provides and it creates a bit of FOMO
syunz@reddit
With fsr4 things are pretty close but amd still hasn't official released the in8 version of fsr4 for rdna3 and 2.

DLSS really is great even on higher end hardware when used to push higher resolutions or higher frames on faster monitors. It also extends the life of older cards. Five year old 30 series cards are still very capable with DLSS, and should be for several years yet. New hardware, old hardware, 60 series or 90 series, DLSS is great on all of them.
I have a 5080 and play on a 1440p 240hz monitor. In Arc Raiders I can render native 1440 using DLAA and get 160-200 frames depending on location and situation. I won't complain about that for a second that is great performance. I use DLSS quality though and can push over 250 frames, up to 300, and max my monitor without any noticeable difference to visuals or latency.
Cantgetridofmebud@reddit
I've always found DLSS quality to look better than native, even on my old 2060 super let alone anything modern
iHaveLotsofCats94@reddit
That's been the case on quite a few games from what I've seen. Even if it's not technically better, there's no discernible difference and it both uses less power and offers (basically) free performance
Cantgetridofmebud@reddit
Yeah, was gonna say, even at worst, it's completely visually identical to native while taking a good load off the card
Marty5020@reddit
Only game that I haven't found that to be true is Diablo 2 Resurrected, but then that's not really relevant in general as it's such a low demanding engine I just increase the internal resolution to 120% and it looks so well defined and sharp.
For all other titles, DLSS Q is phenomenal and for 2K Balanced is also fantastic. Pretty much free performance at this point.
Arx07est@reddit
I went from 7900XT to RTX 5080. At first when i enabled DLSS Hunt Showdown looked even worse than FSR3. But then i found out how to enable DLSS4 and it looks just incredible.
GoatBotherer@reddit
Yes
BattleX100@reddit
FSR 4 closes the gap really. When I try DLSS/FSR on my 5070 Ti, my naked eyes can barely tell the difference. But then, it also depends upon the game and how well it is implemented in it.
Many-Sector-317@reddit
Pretty much you can't use any good RT implementation if you don't turn on fg, but DLAA and DLSS 4 definetly worth it. Also the new Adaptive FG feature is so good. You can just make FG generate less frames when you don't need AI generated frames
bean_fritter@reddit
It really is pretty amazing. Especially the new version 4.5 model. It genuinely looks better than native resolution with TAA at this point.
