First Time Handgun

I recently moved to Kentucky, I have my Kentucky Driver’s license. So I am looking for a handgun for home protection. Eventually I’d like to get one to carry with me during hunting season too, but right now just something for self protection will work

Also in kentucky. The general advice for the go to first guns for home defense and edc would be the glock 19 or the smith and wesson m&p 9 2.0. If you're near Lexington go to buds gun shop and rent both and see which one feels better to you. They also have a decent selection of used guns at reasonable prices for sale there. Very friendly staff

I am in Bowling Green, but there is still a shop about a mile from me here. I plan to go there this weekend on my day off

Yes, in BG Sherwoods guns has an indoor firing range and also rents guns. They also do ccw classes which would be a good way to learn gun saftey.

Since I posted this 3 months ago, I have become friends with the Sherwood’s guns family and I am sad to see them retiring

Yeah just go there and see which feels best in your hand, you don't have to commit to buying right away, definitely see if there's a range near you that has rental guns so you can see which one you shoot best with, i still say glock 19, glock 17, m&p9 2.0, or cz p10, you'll probably want to stay on the smaller size if you want to edc that way you can conceal carry. most people can conceal a glock 19 fine with the right clothes and carry position. If you're a smaller frame person something like a glock 43x or a smith m&p shield might be a better fit. id recomend staying away from the glock 26 unless you're missing your pinkie and ring finger lol, really awkward to shoot.

For most people, a mid size 9mm striker fired pistol is the sweet spot reliable, manageable recoil, good capacity. Think Glock 19, S&W M&P 2.0 Compact, or SIG P320 Compact all have strong track records and tons of holster support options.

More decent options would be a glock 17 for something bigger, or a cz p10 (p10f for a big gun, p10c for a smaller one, whichever size suits you best) for a different grip profile than the glock or smith

Yes, the answer is almost always the same advice. Find a shooting range that offers rentals. Try some out and see what feels good in the hand. Everyone has different tastes. The range should also have someone on site to help you with that and most offer training.
