My attempt at recreating Jamie Hyneman’s “Jamie Special” work table

I’ve been doing “two-week build” projects inspired by maker shows like Prototype This! and obviously MythBusters (i get the sense it was the same production team for both).
I needed a workbench for my shop, so I decided to build my own version of Jamie Hyneman’s “Jamie Special” table, with a few modifications for how I actually work / what I needed in a work table.
He mentions it in a couple videos, most prominently in this one
https://youtu.be/WyWDwCaQNrU?si=LSPxcdAjwa1-hI0B
Some things I changed:
- Framed on all sides (I didn't need a nested version and if I want to add a center support long term having both sides framed will allow for that)
- Bolted through metal instead of relying on screws for top surface installation
- Had to use 1.5" square steel tube since my "local" metal supply didn't have any 1" on hand.
- Didn't put a second layer on top yet but it's modular so I can add that later at my leisure / as my application requires (had dog-hole top suggested which is interesting.)
- Retractable Casters (because I work alone a lot and need to be able to move it around without hearing metal scrape on concrete, but also don't want the casters to be load bearing)
I documented the whole process because I figured other builders might find parts of it useful or maybe improve on it and I couldn't find a full tutorial / buildout of the whole thing anywhere.
Video here if anyone wants to see the full build process:

Curious, has anyone else here built their own version or taken inspiration from Mythbusters shop setups? The wall of bins seems particularly cool (to me anyways, parts organization is the bane of my existence). Also any feedback on the build is totally welcome.

This is brilliant! All of your comments also help to paint an excellent picture of your process, as well as the preferences that informed them. The mustache tingles, for Jamie would be proud.
I am curious if you topped yours with the same material Jamie recommends? It sounds very interesting given that it’s a quality of life modification that he chooses every time. Makes me think it might be worth it and also curious how it is in person?

Thank you!
I was going to, however I live in a fairly remote location with a fairly understocked hardware store so I wasn't able to get the material in time to complete the build. HOWEVER, since it is a modular top I do plan on eventually replacing the existing plywood I used with Trupan which I think they stock at the Home Depot about an hour from me.
This table has had a month + in service at this point and it has been an incredible asset. I used it pretty extensively in my most recent build and it really made my life easier.

Retractable casters is genius

For cheap castes from amazon, they are surprisingly resilient. I dropped the frame once when I was painting and they didn't skip a beat!

Are they made of polyurethane?

Blueprint paper and silver sharpie inbound!

I wanted to make Jamie specials for my shop including the nesting abilities.
Ended up doing what you did instead (from pre existing shop benches).
I have 6 heavy duty casters on mine so no worry about load.
Two suggestions. Since its no longer nestable, add a board into the void on the lower frame. That way you have additional storage and can put stuff under the table and still move it around.
Get someone to bend up some 1-2mm 316 stainless tops for it. Makes they incredibly hard wearing.

I love this!

No triangles?

I too was a little… not too hip with the lack of triangles in the design. My instinct is to ALWAYS include diagonal supports on anything like this but I was trying to keep (mostly) to the design as Jamie intended it… mostly.

Oh that is cool.

Well done!
